I can't speak for the GM but for me it's mostly the convenience of having people right there to run with. Plus if we are on the same realm/faction we can help each other with gear and stuff.

They aren't really good for all that much. Not useful in PvE very often though you can decoy patrols with them. In PvP they can distract opponents. But mostly they just look cool.
