A new, LoL/DotA-esque desktop client based Warsong Gulch Server

I'm gauging interest here in a project that I started with a friend and have been casually working on in my spare time. It's something I've thought about for a long time and recently decided to start working on. The modifications to the server core are completed, we're testing it now and working on the queuing/lobby interface. If there's enough interested, we'll schedule a stress test in the near future (for the level 19 bracket initially).

The concept is pretty simple. If you've played League of Legends or DotA, the idea is similar - but with twink bracket Warsong Gulch instead. You login with your account into a new desktop application that we're working on (a simple electron app). You select your race/class/spec/enchants and your talents. You queue up, chat shit in the lobby while you wait, and when you get matched up, you hit "Enter Battleground".

WoW (3.3.5a) will open up, automatically log you into the world, and you will be on a character with your account name, dropped directly into the Warsong Gulch with other players who queued. There will be no items or gear (except visually). You don't have any "bags". Your stats will be set by the server automatically to match your spec (based on 2.4.3). Consumables would be rebalanced/disabled (not important right now), but they would be spells with a cooldown instead of actual items. Ditto for trinkets. We're discussing how to handle weapon/gear swaps mid-game (probably as a spell), but initially it would be sets based on selected spec with different enchant/weapon options before entering queue.

We have discussed many feature creeps at length, from cosmetics to different brackets and different BGs. But the core concept that I want to launch is simple - no messing with different vendors/enchants/characters/etc. I want to queue up a spec for WSG, and drop into a balanced team game and cap some flags. I hope you do too. I want to support all brackets (and other BGs) eventually, if the community is large enough.

Update: Things are moving along. New thread, looking for some input!

big part of wow's appeal is the customisability of the set of gear tho

the way i see it, having a no-hassle template to jump in for a quick game's fine, but taking away the option from every1 is not; if you want to waste your time to customise your set of gear, you should always have the option to do so

Down the road I'd like to help scratch that itch with cosmetic sets, but if you like gearing up or collecting gear, then this probably won't do it for you. I would like to focus on the Warsong experience first and foremost with this concept.

nono, that isn't my point but like, customise the set to feature the stats you want to have/use
after all, thats one of the main points of twinking, the gear's interesting and generally more side- than upgradey so different builds featuring different stat emphasises are viable (unlike lets say, endgame)

Oh, yeah you will be able to customize enchants/pieces when queuing. You would just be selecting your "gear" before entering the game. I may abstract the choices away from being "on the gear" itself in the UI, but the end result will be the same - you'll be able side-grade stat choices like normal. I do not want to remove any existing relevant choices that may affect combat.

I mean wouldn't a realm similar to the old AT(now warmane blackrock) be easier to do? Just a mall hub with custom vendors that sell twink gear for every slot, a duel zone and the BG npc in the middle. Everyone starts at lvl 19 with locked xp without being able to unlock, also outside zones are unreachable. Just like the hub you mentioned but in game.

Easier sure, but the UI/UX is horrible and setting up each character and managing inventory is purely a time waster.

I think games like DotA/League nailed the UX, since once you're "in game" you're actually going straight to PvPing.

I don't want to make a regular twink hub realm, those already exist.

So basically you set up a character in the client by picking items and stuff and then it creates the character and logs you in automatically? Like chosing runes in league for example?

Yes, the desktop client UX is going to be heavily inspired by the League client. You'll have saved templates to your account for different specs and such, so you just select the role/spec you want to play, and then after your queue pops the game launches directly into your WSG (no character selection - your account is your character which changes each game).

my gut feeling is that at best, it's a waste of time (and at worst, confusing the fuck outta every1)
since generally the twinking target audience's heavily enfranchised already and would probably find it easier to navigate a mall a la AT than this, and idt you'll be able to bait enough randoms™ w/ it to be worth the effort

like, on paper i can see where this is going, but in reality ... well.
(template npc is still possible and a great idea, but yea)

I can’t wait! This sounds like it will be a blast, please keep us updated!

I was really hoping this was you creating a CTF map in a lol/dota setting and not just another twink private server.

If its based on 3.3.5, then what possible motive do I have to play it when wotlk classic releases?

at the very least i see this being a very valuable tool for guild vs guild premades, especially with the issue of serpents + naxx enchants and new players/guilds not having access/resources to field a equally geared team. I also know from experience that some games/practices are derailed because we are missing priest for example. With this system anyone could log on and fill for another guild without needing a fully twinked priest.

Hope it gains traction

Interesting idea. Id give it a go for sure.

One idea that ive found interesting that might work well with this model, is a 5v5 wsg with a modified map that is smaller length/width. Just throwing that out there.
