If WoW went totally F2P...

A few days ago we were kicking around the idea in chat, what if WoW went F2P for the battle chest (currently only 5 bucks).

I can't stop thinking about how f*ing epic it would be to do ICC again. I personally loved that expansion, the look and feel of an ice raid and some really sick bosses and lore. Saurfang dying at the Wrathgate and being rezzed as the Deathbringer. The Sindragoa fight, trying to clear stacks and her yelling PERISH! One of my personal favorites.

I started playing around with a BiS Fire Mage at 80 and came up with this chardev 10 - Mist of Pandaria - BETA
Not even counting cata drops, just MoP scaling and ICC gear. It looks sick.

So many other MMOs are going F2P and when Googleing around I found this: Is 'World of Warcraft' Exploring A Free To Play Future? - Forbes
In no means proof, but I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't at least considering it to stay current.

Expect a new expansion to be announced in the next few months. Lets keep our fingers crossed for some F2P changes.

Just to open it up to everyone, if it was totally F2P what bracket would you play in? What's the most competitive and balanced? What raids would you be particularly excited about?

70 or 80 probably. 39 too

>7.7mil subs
>going F2P

Hey, this isn't some bad niche game with the generic, boring, asian like engine which GW2 uses. This game won't go F2P.

The new talents and many of the other changes interfere with the, 'old day' feeling.

Most talents are passives now or just erased because they were obselete. Reactive Barrier much? Oh those random RNG stun talents where so good!

Irrelevant.

The way Blizzard has changed everything with Cata and MoP (you could say WotLK too if you're TBC or TBC if you're Vanilla raiding/pvping). You may feel differently, but for me having the removal of a lot of stuff just takes away the fun. I don't care if they were just passive talents at least I had a lot of things to choose from.

Currently Blizz makes over $110 million monthly from wow alone, So It's highly unlikely wow will go f2p in the near future.

I am certain though that wow will go f2p someday, maybe in 5 years, maybe in 10 years.

How could they monetize it to make money off f2p? You pay cash for blizz stamps to use mail boxes. Pay cash to unlock professions, unlock xp, unlock gold cap... They want your $15 a month.

I could see f2p becoming more likely if blizz's new game Titan becomes a big cash cow and WoW really loses subs. I'm not big on the micro transactions. What if you could pay cash for all the heirlooms and enchants to gear a toon. What if you HAD to pay cash to gear a toon.

When I got my free character boost I made a 80 mage. Geared up with cata swag the damage and performance of the toon was SOO OP. It was really fun.

It will eventually but not till after last xpac.

I think that it's not a time barrier or an expansion barrier but rather a subscription barrier:

There is a mathematical point in the sub numbers where the F2P-cashshop model becomes better than the subscription model, not just cause of those maths, but even because of psychology (who would pay 12-15 bucks per month for a 'dead' game that doesn't get much attention from the devs anymore?...) and many other factors and at that certain point - maybe it will be a while after Titan is released, if it's a well-made, well-received game that gains a lot of attention and subs - Blizzard will make WoW free to play, not because some players cry for it, but because the economy and investors do.

And at that point I will probably stop playing, because the amount of ENJOYABLE F2P-MMORPGs (NON-p2win) is so pitifully tiny, that WoW will probably fall in the 'unenjoyable' category...
And not even just because of the pay-to-win factor, but also because these games usually have so low revenue that the devs don't care about half-assed implementations and make the gameplay crap as well.

Wat?

WoW probably won't be full f2p till 2015-2018

And now you get those choices for free for just levelling up. Nothing changed really in that department. You don´t have to click on all the passives anymore to learn them.

I don't think f2p WoW will happen until subs drop below 1 million. 180 million per year (@ 1 million subs) is still a significant chunk of change for a game that is fully developed and only requires updates and patches. Expansions still have a box price that helps pay for that Dev time.

As far as what brackets I would prefer if it were to happen? For PvE it would definitely be BC or Wrath. For PvP, it would depend on queue times - as long as the classes I liked were viable.

I'd rather go play a private server if I wanted to play an old raid. The new talents and many of the other changes interfere with the, 'old day' feeling.
Never understood why Blizz cant bring up different servers with old content, lets say vanilla only 1-1.12 server, tbc only, wotlk only, cata. The same subscription rules, a few millions of people would probably return, at least for a few months and it takes no effort from Blizz. The only idea I think of is that they dont want to "break" these few millions over different game conditions, which leads to different supports and many people not appreciating new work (for latest addon).
