80 Rogue DPS

Amaya

Legend
How do the various specs stand up against the top tier 80 dps classes (mage/hunter)? My rogue is at 77, LW, currently leveling alchemy up.

I'm not sure about self buffed, but the quick test sims I ran yesterday on both sub and combat were giving results as follows (didn't run assassination, lack of time to)

Combat: 20148dps
Subtlety:20465dps

I'm going to run these again however, because I didn't run many iterations, and i suppose whilst I do it we can throw some arcane/fire BiS sets and some other classes, just to see the comparison.

go assasination with much mastery, way more fun then combat

Sub should (in theory) be the highest dps, simply because the spec scales very well with agility (gains a multiplicative 30% increase) and haste. With the hilarious level of both stats a level 80 rogue can obtain, it should be the best of the three specs. Ironically, Assassination should be lowest, because it scales the weakest with these stats (only the leather spec bonus, and haste is far less useful). Mastery is additive, so also doesn't scale as fast as it does for combat or sub (haste and crit get benefits from % modifiers to certain spells, whereas mastery doesn't)

Despite this, given the relative weakness of mastery for sub, it might work against the spec. I'll run the sims like I said to see.

I actually thought Mastery Assassination would have been strong, same with Mastery stacking Sub, since you can achieve 50%+ crit and 25+ mastery I believe.

Edit: http://www.chardev.org/?profile=352183 bis? Missing 80 AP and 30 crit since chardev won't let me use draconic embossment on legs

Namely because apparently you can't. Requires level 85.

I have the 190 ap 55 crit one right now on my rogue at 77. Just leveled LW up to 500 for legs/bracers enchants.

draconic embossment is the bracer enchant, dragonbone leg reinforcements are for the legs
also its a difference of 80ap and 10 crit from scorched (110ap/45crit) to dragonbone (190ap/55crit)

however if you have the dragonbone on your 77 and they're working (not in red text/actually adding stats to your sheet) then thats fantastic news for LWs. b/c like aelo and splosion said they werent usable due to having a lvl requirement of 85. but i just checked my 85 LW and they dont say anything about a lvl req anymore, tool tip just says it causes the item to become soulbound...so if they work now its a nice new boost

It's the Dragonbone leg enchant. My mistake. I checked Wowhead and it looks like it is working again for LWs below 85.

Edit: Combat actually gains more from Agility. They gain 30% + 6% AP. More AP than Sub, about 6% less crit.

Hmm looks like they might have finally fixed it  It must have been recent (post-4.3.2) because a guildie opened a ticket about it still being bugged after the patch.

Not solid confirmation, but I asked an 85 LW to link his legs with the LW-only enchant on them, and I didn't see a "Requires level 85" like I used to:

I never said it didn't :)

It's good to know the leatherworking leg enchants are working again. It means we can level LW, enchant the BiS items, then level inscription again!

I just got the enchant today. Maybe I have grandfathered leatherworking?

Nope, like Aelo says it was a case of the enchant simply being un-usable by 80 twinks. It has since changed.

Back to where I was, I have simcraft results! They're not anything like I expected.

Using 50000 iterations, 350 sec fight length, light movement, good player skill, vs a level 83 target.

Amaya's sub BiS: 20,281 dps
My combat BiS: 20,149.3 dps
My sub BiS: 20,480 dps
My assassination BiS: 23,415 dps

It's quite clear that for some reason, assassination just scales better with the gear. I've a feeling it's because it has a lot of haste (almost 18%), which provides the energy regen to keep the Mutilate spamming up, and provides a lot of poison procs. Assassination at 85 prefers mastery (as does the 80 set), but because of that it has very low haste. At 80 this isn't the case, and as such the spec likely scales better (it's only around 15%, but enough to make a difference).

as of now you could, but damn that'd be a lot of money for 80 ap and 10 crit (or 60 stam 10 agi). i know every single stat point matters to some, but i hope ur rich lol
not to mention it could come back to bite you later if it gets nerfed. for now i see no mention on the tooltip of the leg reinforcements not working if you change, BUT the wrist enchants do stop working if you do not have at least 500 LW skill. and imo the bracer enchants are whats really good anyways - at least from someone like a feral druids perspective.....b/c 80 ap and 10 crit more on legs is nice, like i said, but not having lvl300+ bracers means a feral druid can go from 38ap enchant (or w/e bis is) to 130 agi which is a metric fuckton of an agi/ap upgrade - enchants worth ~450ap with might/mark and cat talents if i did the right math

50 ap enchant on wrists. LW replaces that with a 130 agi enchant. Inscription replaces a 40 AP 15 crit enchant with 130 agi and 25 crit. free crit is free.

Yeah, LW is pretty awesome.

LW + Alchemy are easily top professions for melee dps right now at 80.

I figured Assassination would be top at 80. 23 DPS is nice, almost on par with mages.

Can you link your Assassination BiS please?

We had a guildy test the various rogue specs last year, Assasination was the highest, but I don't think he tested Sub properly outside of PvP.

Assasination was at one point our second highest dps spec/class behind arcane mages. And in some fights it was pretty close.
We figured it was mainly because of the crazy scaling on mastery with envenom and poisons.

Strangely enough, Mastery just doesn't scale well for assassination. It's additive (much like resto druid mastery), so won't scale as well as agi + haste does for combat and sub. I think it's simply because there's so much haste/crit on wotlk gear that assassination pulls ahead, despite wanting those stats less.
