so i know its renowned that the word twink has thought to be originated from some guy calling some dude pwniing his low lvl a "twink(aka gay young male)

however, i have a different theory...

In America you commonly refer to this as "Whiteout" -

However, in my country (New Zealand) white out is actually known as "twink"

So, my theory is, that the word "twink" in terms of a world of warcraft character, was dubbed by a New Zealander.

My reason for this is that twinking something out here would be like "correcting" something and making it "perfect" similar to how we make our twinks.

I'd love to hear peoples opinions on this as well as any other theories outside of the young homosexual male theory.

I wish you could have seen the reaction of my gay friend when I told him I play World of Warcraft and that I enjoy playing my Twinks. I would love to know the true origin of the name in reference to gaming. Wikipedia doesn't cut it for me.

lmfao dude thats hilarious. it is a bit of fun to flip some ideas around about the history of the word

Can google it to learn the real origin, but I think it comes from first gen mmo's like Anarchy Online and Ultima Online. I played EverQuest for a while before WoW came out, and it had that terminology of twink too. It just meant a low level character with very powerful gear.

I swear I'm not a soccer dad yet.

Wayyyy back in the D&D days you called someone a twink that would not conform to the accepted standards of gameplay during tournaments.ie "roleplay". It was a derogatory term.

I would imagine. My generation, Gen X, coined the term. And we were the first generation to be brought up with video games, pong, Atari, until what we have now. Thus it moved from pen and paper game to a digitized version of the term. Then it got canonized into the lexicon of the gaming world that we know today.

I'm going to go there...

This suggests for level twenty twinking that the true twinks are those supported by higher level or paid characters.

^^This. For those of us who used to play pen & paper rpgs a twink was someone who min/maxed all their talents into pure slaying to become powerful instead of creating a realistic roleplaying character.
