my account is currently a trial, my level 20 druid has still been getting dings & i see the experience bar says something like 200,000/20,000

if i subscribe & never log into this character, will it level up (without xp turned off)?

access to warband bank/pet battles/gold cap/inviting people to groups turns off when you subscribe. when your subscription lapses, which of these limitations return?

I would imagine you can sub for a month. And then immediately cancel and request a refund.

As long as you haven’t requested a refund in a few months it’s usually approved automatically. If not then you can still write an appeal and come up with a lame excuse like wrong account or something.

Make sure you don’t log into that toon during that time. And most definitely lock your xp before.

Assuming there isn’t anything I don’t know about you should be good, but I’m pretty sure that banked xp is going to haunt that character. You’d be particularly exposed to unannounced free game time weekends and the like.

If you are going to sub for a month you should consider just making another Druid and getting them to 20 and locking XP as close as you can to no xp for the level. That way you wont have to worry about banked XP screwing you over later on.

Because I honestly don't see much of a point in subbing if you aren't going to be able to use it for getting hard to get/unobtainable items onto chars you play. You can unlock XP for battleground queues after your sub time drops anyways.

You can lock XP on your druid and that should protect them. You should keep XP locked on your druid after that, though, because as mentioned above you can be surprised by free weekends after that.

Also as mentioned, you should have a plan what you want to do with that month before subbing. If you sub for a month and then don't touch the game after that, the only things that'll change are that future toons won't gain banked XP and you'll have access during free weekends. You can get some nice goodies by unlocking things with higher level characters and/or above the gold cap, but you need to actively do those during your time.

gotcha, i wasn't sure if the gold cap was only for accounts that -never- had subscribed for example. or if it was permanent state when unsubscribed

The starter edition gold cap works the same for pure f2p or unsub vet.

Once your gold gets past 1000 you stop gaining gold from all sources (and can’t vendor junk).

But as a vet, when you do have sub active you can send yourself extra gold above the 1000 cap. When sub ends, it won’t disappear you’ll just have gold in excess of 1000 and still not gain any more gold from all sources. I always send myself a few thousand gold every sub to make sure I can buy the odd gold sink toy from a vendor when I see one.

So there a bunch of things you can get with a paid account that you should absolutely take advantage of. I mean just lock XP and login. Off the top of my head:
  • Lots of crafting recipes you can't buy f2p because they cost >1k gold. For 10-11s, the good Mechagon ring recipe is one;
  • JOIN A GUILD. Once your sub lapses, toons of that (now) Vet account can join any guild that toons on that account are already in.
  • Buy a ton of stuff on the AH that you either can't get or is incredibly time-consuming to get like Lifestealing enchants;
  • Buy ring and neck sockets for items that can take them. These are made with TWW crafting so you can't do that a F2P or Vet account. You have to buy them. You can apply the sockets to any ring or neck that drops from a current season dungeon. That usually means an SL dungeon for some reason.
  • Accrue more than 1k gold. Once your sub lapses, you don't lose the gold but you can still spend it. It is annoying though because you can't sell junk.
  • Complete campaigns so future alts can use skips. Some of these might be doable on F2P/Vet. I'm not sure since I do them on my paid account anyway.
There's probably lots of things I'm not thinking of. It's well worth the $15 though but you should plan what you're going to do.

Don't think this was mentioned yet, and easy to overlook, but If you have the gold, don't forget to buy out all bank slots (this changed not long ago where Blizz got away with bank bag slots).
