Hi Folks,
Today I finally obtained the +2 scope and also figured out why no F2P had obtained it before. The secret is that the [Standard Scope] is only contained in the [Box of Assorted Parts] that are found within Gnomeregan, and not in The Deadmines or Bloodmyst Isle. After figuring this out, I was able to obtain the +2 scope in just 4 clears! See my armory link in the signature for proof.
There are four (4) [Box of Assorted Parts] in each Gnomeregan instance. To make farming even simpler, the boxes are always found at the exact same spots. Click on the "Gnomeregan" link where it says "This object can be found in" on the Wowhead page for the [Box of Assorted Parts] and then click the "Change floor..." button to view [Level 1] and [Level 2] to see the location of the boxes.
Guide to farming boxes in Gnomeregan
You will likely need a higher level to boost you here or a decent group of level 20s to help clear to the boxes. However, it has been reported that you can solo the first two boxes as a Hunter if you have decent gear and know how to kite effectively.
1) Zone in the front entrance and clear to the end of the first corridor.
2) Pick up the [S.A.F.E. "Parachute"] from the chest of "Extra Parachutes".
Note: The chest will not despawn after looting, but the parachute is unique.
Protip: This parachute can also be used in Arathi Basin!
3) Clear around the walkway to the left and then down the corridor that heads east to the Grubbis boss (on [Level 1]).
4) Loot the 1st box here. Do not talk to the NPC that starts the escort which spawns Grubbis.
Note: Rogues can stealth here and loot this box without pulling aggro.
5) Run back out the corridor and clear to the central platform in the "Halls of Gear" (also on [Level 1]). Loot the 2nd box here.
Note: If you are solo/duo farming these boxes on a level 20 you may want to zone out here (or just jump and die) and reset the instance. Otherwise, it makes sense to loot all 4 boxes before resetting due to the 5 instances per hour limit.
6) Drop down to [Level 2] using your [S.A.F.E. "Parachute"] looted in step 2.
7) Clear your way into the dormitory and into the top-left-most dorm. Loot 3rd box here.
8) Clear your way to the Halls of Gear and down the corridor to the "Launch Bay".
9) Turn right and clear around the donut walkway to the northern side. Loot the 4th box here.
If you didn't get lucky with the [Standard Scope] then zone out and reset. You can zone out either through the front or back doors (seems to take around the same time) -or- take off your gear and die as the spirit healer is right outside the instance.
