PoM Fire Mage

Fire Mage

Go Fire, take [Presence of Mind] over [Scorch], Scorch does low Dps and should only be used for more Cc or kiting.

Damage Rundown

Burst should go as follows:
Fire spell crit [Hotstreak]> Frost nova> Pyroblast Shatter [Hotstreak Proc]> Instant Pyroblast from Proc> Presence of mind> Pyroblast> Fireblast

I was actually really excited about Fire when MoP was in the works, but I have to say in practice it's not so exciting :(
Pyroblast really doesn't do that much damage and fire is missing a lot of its key spells as well as those that cause crits, so you don't get Pyroblast! very often.

If you're enjoying it, more power to you. i have been a bit spoiled by early cata 85 fire mage though :p

Can you even get enough crit to make that worthwhile?

When I come back to WoW i'll be retiring my mage and rerolling Goblin ______

Mage used to be king. Now it's trash...... maybe Polymorph is its only saving grace

Pretty sure they've always been trash.

I think you need to be well geared to go fire and be successful.

Scorch does very little dmg (even on the run is cool) so go POM and you want max crit (after hit capped).

IAT brings up a good point - you can maybe get to 15-18 % crit - not sure if it's a worthwhile spec overall when talking solely about dps #s.

I'm pretty bummed cause my main is/was a fire mage.

My mage is currently frost with Ice Floes. I think (?) that's probably the strongest build right now, as it focuses on as much control as possible. But yeah, mage has been relegated to basically a solely CC role.

Yeah, I switch between Arcane and Frost a lot now but I've been sticking with Ice Floes. Its the most consistent extra mobility for those two specs (nowhere near enough to make up for Cone of Cold though :( ). Arcane is definitely the best choice for Arathi Basin with the drawn out multiple healer battles. I actually have the time/freedom to stack up Arcane Charges and then Nova => 6 Charge Arcane Barrage to put out some solid single target and AoE damage. You can also spam Arcane Explosion around farm and build up charges on the rats there.

WSG I play Arcane and Frost about 50/50. The extra CC is definitely more important, but the one downside to Frost is that you're completely helpless against druids. The druid has to be legitimately terrible for you to even tickle them. I'm also not a fan of playing defense in PuGs, so that keeps me splitting time between the two specs. Can at least kill something eventually as Arcane (unless, of course, they're a 24 with Gnomer gear. No way I'm building up arcane charges with an easily LoSed 2 second cast that misses or gets resisted at least 20% of the time.)

I may try Fire again soon, but its a bit tougher with some of the changes. I had to make the switch away from a glass cannon high crit/sp set because the damage just wasn't good enough to justify it. Stacking hit/stam/resil is just much more important now. Hit is a huge problem, so even on my P2P mage I had to start using GSOJ again over DHC. Its also very hard to generate reliable crits when you have to hardcast 2.25 second Fireballs to do it (wtb baseline fire Scorch). And its devastating when the PoM Pyro shatter doesn't crit. Its probably no worse than Arcane though, just a different mechanic setting up your burst. Fire is random/RNG dependent, Arcane is consistent but takes a long time.

Frost is the way to go^_^

personally i used to play fire in cata however mop really nerfed the big damage that fire offered.
however i switched to frost for the amazing cc.

i was using an @target macro for frostbolt
it would let you heal your focus target with frostbolts.

So you were exploiting. Your credibility just got reduced to zero.

I remember when everyone was so excited fire mages were getting buffed in MoP and i told everyone they would be shit and you all got upset over it.

Told you so.

Interesting...

I went from frost to fire to arcane, but mages should always have PoM now.
