In case anyone isn't familiar, let me explain how you can use layering and phasing for fun and profit. And, in this case, for avoiding other people while PvP flagged.
Every realm has 4 "layers". At least that's what I call them. Some call this "phasing". I don't like that name because phasing means advancing your toon's game state such that portals appear and other world changes happen because of quests you've done, etc. The four layers are:
- CT ("Chromie Time") off, WM ("War mode") off
- CT off, WM on
- CT on, WM off
- CT on, WM on
You will never see people from a different layer. 71+ toons can get to CT layers with Party Sync to someone in CT but they'll scale. The advantage of doing PvP activities in a CT layer is you can't et one shot by a belligerent 80 and you won't tend to see people in CT layers who aren't levelling. It's just less populated.
So for MoP Remix, for example, Blizzard implemented that by creating a 5th "layer", just for Remix. This is how you were on the exact same realm but never saw anyone from non-Remix Retail. if you escaped Pandaria (which you could), you could go to SW/Org and not see another player. Because you were on a separate layer.
But there's more. There's a thing called "Connected realms". if two realms are connected, they're the exact same realm. Just some people have longer names you have to type. These are probably hte result of low-pop realm merges from the past. For example, Ravenholdt-US and Maelstrom-US are connected. You can do personal crafting orders and everything. You will be in the same zones. With cross-realm grouping and guilds there's fewer and fewer differences between connected and unconnected realms.
Additionally, there's CRZ ("Cross-realm zones"). These are groups of connected realms that will tend to run into each other in the open world. So if you're doing Legion WQs and need to kill some rare, you'll probably arrive just as someone else killed it because that's how sharding works. Shards tend to be within the CRZ. I think these were strict boundaries at one point and may not apply anymore because I've certainly seen people outside of my CRZs. It may depend on the area and other factors.
But here's the big one: RP and non-RP realms don't mix. You won't randomly run into someone from the other type of realm. Cross-realm grouping can bring someone onto what is otherwise an RP realm.
So why did I explain all this? Because CT on, WM on on a low-pop connected RP realm is where you want to be if you want to level or quest and not be bothered.
So, for example, when I was farming Adventurer of Nazjatar, I used a max level toon with WM on on a low-pop RP realm to get "free" Nazjatar Battle Commendations.
Now you need to be level 20+ to activate WM. If I were going to farm PvP WQs, chests, etc, I'd start a toon on a low-pop RP connected realm and go into CT. You can try this with WM on (if you're 20+) or off. You can get good reasults with each.
