Need some priestly advice

I'm working on a priest. On a whim, I specced disc and am really liking it. I like the idea of a offensive healer. Can deal damage and healbot when needed. I'm wondering how it stacks to shadow for pure dps? With disc's added 15% intellect and 6% more spell power for shadow and holy spells, it looks like disc may get a good bit more spell power which may help close the gap in dps that shadow has (if any).

What are your experiences with priests in bg's? How much spell power can I hope to achieve, I think I can hit ~155 with no boa's and balanced stats. That sound about right? How is survivability? Guessing they probably do as well as any other clothie against hunters. Maybe a bit better?

So far this is what I have in mind: Profiler - Wowhead Wowhead apparently dosen't take the intellect bonus and talents into account. Also, that 17 spellpower from Inner Fire.

Thanks guys!

p.s. I probably won't get the AMG, but I wanted to fill that slot and have nothing for it until I can save for some boa's :( I'm pretty casual, hence, no "super" fishing hat.

my priest runs at about 200-220 sp. depending on set. boas are easy to get with your twinks own honor now. shadow is not better dmg than disc, although technically in a premade an O spriest has its place with the continuous cc of mind flay.

Shadow is terrible in this bracket. Discipline definitely has more offensive power. Disc just has more bonuses to damage than Shadow at level 20.

I was Disc for quite a while when I first started and it was great. Penance was a good emergency tool for healing someone quickly or aiding a burst (or just killing someone on your own). The stronger shield and big mana pool made it very easy to keep allies and myself alive.

Switching to Holy made a noticeable difference in performance, though. Holy Word: Chastise is a lifesaver whenever it's used, and Desperate Prayer makes it even easier to stay alive. I did lose some offensive potential, but that's mostly just in the form of steady dps, and the extra cc and heal outweigh the loss of dps in my opinion. Holy Fire does have a 1.5 second cast, though, so the burst damage is respectable. You just can't Holy Fire > Mind Blast > Penance for like 600+ damage anymore. I highly recommend giving it a try.

As for my experience playing a priest in battlegrounds, the class seems really effective. The shield is essentially an instant Flash Heal that can also give your target a damage cushion. Psychic Scream can be a little difficult to use against ranged classes once they figure out that kiting you will prevent them from getting hit by it, but the fact that it's instant and hits multiple targets more than makes up for that. In AB I've ran to my corpse to manually resurrect in the middle of a group of enemies trying to assault a flag to fear bomb them many times. Also, don't forget you have a melee attack. You'd be surprised how many killing blows I've gotten with a staff hit ^^

Edit: About your trinket slots - the WSG trinket and honor insignia are BiS until you can get something like AGM and the inherited insignia. The WSG trinket cost 20 honor and gives +4 stamina and 10 spell penetration; the insignia costs 55 honor. Both are very easy to get.

I play a Human Disc Priest and the versatility like you mention as an "offensive healer" is a great way to describe the class. In an average bg, I usually average 12,000 Damage and 12,000 healing per a match, with deaths kept at a minimum. This usually ,seeing as I'm alliance ;) and win most bgs, puts me at the top of the bracket for honor.

About survivability, disc priests, with 15% larger mana pool AND 20% improved sheild prove to be very hard to take down. Penance is a nice touch to healing as well, low mana cost and nice reward. Your sheild is also a lifesaver to teamates as during a battle, with a quick heal or too aswell. In my opinion, with the ability to fear aswell and takedown any opponent, disc priests can win a 1 on 1 with anyone and survive barrages.

ALSO I find hunters even easy to take down. I pop power word sheild and fear to rid the pet, then take down the hunter with a cure, holy fire, mind blast, and penance (Avg not even 5 seconds total) then finish off with smite. Honostly its a great class and i love it. XD. 10x better then the experience i had with mage vs. hunter.

Once you start getting gear together, its a blast to play.

Yeah, I don't stand a chance to a good Disc priest, either ends with me dying or both of us running off to aid in objective play once we're done fighting for like, 8 freaking minutes.

I enjoy healing as disc, but that's mostly because my level 70 priest I pvped with in BC was also disc. I didn't really even think about going holy since I use my shield so much. I might have to give holy a try, I mostly heal in the BG anyway. On another note does anyone know how many times a f2p can respec before the cost goes over 10g?

Cam, it doesnt ever go up anymore it stays at around less than 1 gold :)

Awesome, I was wondering this myself. I will probably give Disc and Shadow a go for a different playstyle. Thanks for all the feedback. I'm currently level 19 and have a few of my BiS pieces already. I tried a mage but it's burst at this level dosen't seem to be able to give it a good advantage over classes that aren't as squishy. I think the priest and more importantly, the disc priest will fit that bill rather well. It may well lack a bit of burst, but it seems to be much less squishy.

Also, Dangerdoom, I would like to see your armory link...take a gander at that there 200 spellpower...wow.

I too am intrigued by this 200-220 spell power. I can just get over 200 with elixir of wisdom and minor wizard oil.
