Macbooks!

I've been thinking of getting a macbook for school and stuff but also to be playing world of warcraft during my spares (no classes), does anybody know how smoothly they run?

As someone who has one, I don't recommend buying one. You can get a windows laptop, with just as good of quality for half the price. And Macs are -not- good for gaming on at all. And no, you're not paying for quality either. I've had my hard drive crash on me twice in the last four years. Both times it happened during finals week when I had papers due.

I'm not a blind Apple hater since I have actually used their products. But I do not recommend them.

If you're getting a new macbook it will have no trouble running WoW at all.

Owner of both Mac and PC computers here:
I bought a macbook in 2007 for the start of college. All my syllabuses said go mac - so I blindly listened. $2600 later (with applecare - thank god), my battery has died completely twice, my charger internally exploded once, frying a wall jack, the "logic board" has died 3 times... I now only use this computer to do VERY small non resource heavy things on campus and as a $2600 external hard drive. But, even at 5+ years of age, it's still reliabe for the simple things and starts up immediately (probably because I have hardly any applications on it).

I bought a PC with windows 7 over a year ago and have had no issues yet.
The whole "macs don't get viruses and PCs do" myth is stupid. If you're not an idiot with a PC, you will never get anything threatening on your computer. Always download programs from the website that makes them, or a trusted thrid party like cnet. If you're torrenting, don't download a 4kb file when you should be downloading a 2 gig one.. ya know, that kind of stuff...

I say get a PC - for $800-1200, you can build something that will last you for a very long time.

thanks guys, going shopping tommorrow, one of my buddies say that their is a razor blade at bestbuy in my city, so yeah lol.

remember, as with everything else, you're paying for the design. Belueve me; you do not want to sit at the school library with anything but a mac. It may seem pathetic and sad, yet it's the truth.

It's not the truth. Macs are icky and the workflow is icky.

icky.

Razr blades are just as bad, if not worse than ANY mac product... they are Razr's first attempt at a style computer... it's the equivalent of buying a Ferrari just to drive 3 miles to work at your minimum wage part time job.

In fact, I wouldn't buy anything at a store that you can see on a shelf... go look on newegg at some of the asus machines with an i5 or i7 and a 600+ graphics card. Most notebooks come with 4-6g ram now, and that's all you will need.

For gaming, definitely go for a Windows machine.

Personally however, I've found that gaming on a laptop really decreases its lifespan, whether it's on a mac or PC. I prefer building a desktop for gaming. The quality is much better and you can keep it better ventilated than a laptop.

If you want a school laptop, any old laptop will do. I like macs (own a 2007 Pro and 2009 Pro) for school because of their solid battery life and their simplicity and quick boots. You tend to know what you're getting out of the hardware from a mac. With Windows laptops, do your research and buy from a good brand. Asus, Lenovo, HP, and Dell make good machines (usually).

Again, for gaming... get a desktop or build one.

Yes, it's over-priced. But for what clothes brands don't you pay for the brand (ignore if American cuz clearly they have no interest to buy good looking clothes). Oh, and please explain what on my list that is wrong.
The battery of a Macbook is overrated. Sure they say it runs at about 8 hours per full recharge but that's only if you do non-extensive stuff. Like, opening a text document or something. For video gaming, or watching videos and shit like that, it's like half that amount. Which isn't nearly as impressive. There are laptops other than the Macbook that accomplish this much.

It's a good looking laptop. True. But what about its hardware? It's pretty dated. Right now, the Macbook is sporting some intel gfx card. I don't think I have to tell you what intel gfx cards are known for. And it's not for their ability to handle games well.

''Can't get overheated''? Where did you hear this. Macbooks run pretty hot. Run any game and it's already burning your balls after like 3 minutes. I mean, don't get me wrong. Laptops run pretty hot in general. But the Macbook isn't a laptop known for its ability to maintain low temperature.

I'm going to emphasize the fact that you said ''can't''. All you need to do is google search macbook heat and it's ridiculous.. They even have articles on it.

Yes, Mac OSX looks better than windows. You're right. Too bad it can't run 3/4 of the games that windows can.

''weights less than any windows computer''? What is a ''windows computer''? You mean, weighs less than any other computer. And, I don't think so.

If you'd took the time to read what I wrote, I wrote that I prefer Windows over Mac for gaming, and Mac over Windows for school work. You must've missed that part.

Videos, music. It doesn't necessary have to be gaming. If you want the battery to give you the amount that they specify, then you're kidding yourself. If you think it does, then run a test and see how wrong that estimate is.

The same is pretty much true for its heat. It will run hot with anything remotely extensive.

If you want to do schoolwork and gaming. I still think that a computer other than a macbook is a better idea. A macbook is a bad investment and you'll only end up disappointed with it.

It's not just the fact that the laptop is overpriced. Their warranty is bullshit. It costs like 80 bucks to change the god damn battery.

I remember hearing some solid advice someone said somewhere where macs spelled backwards is scam.
