Lvl 10 arcane mage - Aluneth artifact lvl 20?

Hey folks,

I saw a person earlier today who had the aluneth artefact levelled to ilvl 20. Mine's still at 12.
How do I upgrade it to lvl 20?

I'm a 10 Twink.. (so was the person who had the ilvl 20 aluneth).
I'm currently following the quest lines in case that is what is required.


Any help is appreciated.

Im not sure what ilvl artifacts are for 10s but what you're seeing is a visual bug. His artifact isnt ilvl 20. This is kinda odd to explain so ill include pictures below but basically, at the beginning of the xpac artifacts worked as expected. You put relics in them, they increased in level. Some of us got ours all the way up to ilvl 49 with relics that were GF'd almost immediately.

Later in the xpac a glitch was discovered that allowed you to use relics that got your artifact all the way up to ilvl 54. (at haracter level 20, btw)

Blizz was like "no no no, lets not have that" and nerfed artifacts. Now they kinda work as expected? If you put relics in them it will increase their ilvl a bit, but not in relation to your character level or the level of the relic. They just scale like heirlooms now. But, people inspecting you see the "old" ilvl they were before the nerf.

For instance, if I look at my warriors gear...

Versus if I inspect her on another toon

TL;DR you dont get an ilvl 20 artifact on a 10. And the person you're looking at doesnt have an ilvl 20. Its just an odd visual bug.

Im not an expert in 10s and definitely not much of a mage player. I think a GF'd Staff Of Jordan is BIS (if you can find one on the AH) and i have no idea what else you would use until you get one. But I think artifact might still be good?

Both heirloom staves (Dignified Headmaster's Charge and Grand Staff of Jordan) are stuck at ilvl 12. Same as the Artefact.
I'm currently wearing a Green staff (Staff of Elemental Shaping, lvl 16) which is better than the heirlooms (and the artefact). I was mainly figuring out if levelling the artefact would increase it in level. It seems it doesn't.
For now.. the green item it is. I will level up the artefact to see if there is a difference and post the update here if it does.
