In-Depth Level Seventy Priest Guide (Disc PvP)

Greetings,

This is Dogpriestx's guide for Disc Priest Twinking at level 70. Reposted it because I kept trying to look for it on the forums and couldn't find it again. All credit to him and Yowx, since I doubt Dog would have learned much of this without his arena partner :)

I'm going to break this into a few main sections to basically make this easier for you to read and easier for me to write the sections

• Gear

• Macros

• UI Set Up (+Add-ons)

• Talents + Glyphs

• Class Mechanics

• Viable arena comps

I hope this guide is actually helpful to people. I know a lot of people liked my guide for mages, with the ice lance and face rolling but this is an actual guide - I will edit in any proper responses such as: You should do x to the gear section, and x for the macros section, etc. Thanks for reading!

Gear

Ok let’s get started with the basics- gear! This is probably the most important section because if you don’t get this right, none of the following sections will help at all. Essentially, you want to get to the point where it’s a level playing field against the absolute best of the best priests, and the first way that field can be leveled is to have the absolute best in slot gear, for each of your slots.

For example, let’s say two priests meet up on the battle field, or are opposing healers in an arena. If one had substantially more spellpower on their gear (and thus larger heals or more damage dealt) the one with less spellpower will lose 9 times out of 10, no matter what the skill level. This is assuming each is hit capped.

Here are the stat priorities you want to keep in mind as you are gearing your priest:

Stats: Hit Cap > Spell Pen Cap > Resilience > Intellect.

These are the stats I put as having the highest priority at level seventy.

Ok let’s start with the highest priority stat, and work our way down:

In order for you to get hit capped (4.00%) you need to enchant your gloves and maybe some other items for hit. You might also want to grab the Tier 6 shadow priest belt from Sunwell Plateau which gives you hit. In most cases if you get 1-2 enchants for hit and the belt you will be capped.

The reason that the hit cap is so important is that it could make even a bigger difference in a fight than spellpower. If the priest you are fighting is constantly missing with their spells, you will eventually beat them no matter how much spellpower they have.

Here’s a real life example: You are in an arena, and your team mate calls for a fear on a mage. You run towards the mage, hit your fear button (hopefully you are keybinding at this point) and then- it misses! The mage peels off, stays alive, continues bursting, and your team mate dies because you could not adequately crown control when called on.

It’s also worth noting that if you are helping your team mate burst down your opponent, if you cast a Holy Fire and it misses, that’s a LOT of dps you’re losing that could have contributed to a substantial burst! Not to mention, that mana you could have spent on a heal or a spell that actually did damage is wasted, with no benefit to you.

Ok let’s talk about spell penetration. I will refer to it herein as “spell pen”.

Spell pen is needed in order to combat a stat your opponents will have called “resistance”. Notice the difference between “resistance” and “resilience”. Resilience reduces damage taken by a flat percent, whereas resistance increases the odds of your spells being resisted. Naturally, this is a bad thing, so you stack on some spell pen to effectively neutralize this stat. I believe 97 is the cap for priest, but if I’m wrong please let me know in a post below!

Ok so here’s how I build by spell pen, from 0 to 97:

My cloak enchant is +35 spell pen, my ring gives me 14 spell pen, which brings me up to 49 spell pen total. I then get the wan which is 23, and the mace from Kil’jaeden, and that brings us to 97 total spell pen. Take a look at my armory for more details on this build.

Resilience- the 3d most important stat for a priest.

Resilience, as mentioned before, provides a flat percentage reduction in damage taken from other players. I believe that this stat is better than Intellect, though others may disagree, so I’ll explain my position:

As most of you know, level 70 is pretty unbalanced. One can get blown up in a matter of seconds, so resilience plays an extremely important role when it comes to PvP. On my priest I have 632 resilience, and I’m not BiS, but I believe that BiS resilience is somewhere between 650-670 resilience from purely gemming resilience in my gear.

Ok so you may be asking: “Why not get the socket bonuses, and put Int gems in red sockets?

Well, the socket bonuses are pretty much crap to begin with, so that’s a moot point.

The second reason is that my mana and spellpower (which Intellect contributes to) is fairly close to other BiS arena priests who ARE gemming Intellect, except that I have more resilience. I could probably get my mana up to around 17k going pure int, but at what cost? So I have more mana, but it’s not worth anything if I have to constantly heal my ass, or dead.

To sum it up, the damage dealt at 70 is so insanely high, that you can’t afford to NOT have as much resilience as you can. When you are CC’ed, and your team mate is getting his ass chewed up, you better pray he has enough resilience to weather that assault before you can get out and heal him.

And lastly Intellect, I already explained above, gives mana and spellpower, which you already have enough of on your most basic gear, so that’s why I put it last.

Right you've told me about the stats and what I need but what gear pieces do I buy?

My Priest: http://eu.battle.net...gpriestx/simple

This is NOT a BiS priest please do not copy my gear and think it will be fine because it won't be. I linked it because it gives the basics of what you should follow. You’ll see that I have mainly pvp gear apart from the legs, the reason you get the PvE legs is because they have 3 gem sockets, which gives you alot more resilience and intellect than just getting the PvP legs.

The BiS legs for priest are dropped off of the first boss in Sunwell Plateau. You generally want the full PvP gear set for priests except the weapon, legs and belt. Belt you want Tier 6 shadow priestfor hit, weapon either roll with the staff that drops off the last boss in Sunwell, or the mace and offhand it’s really a matter of preference.

Macros

These macros that I’m about to link are pretty much space savers, and not actually needed, but you can pick and choose ones that will make your life easier.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#showtooltip Renew

/cast [mod:shift,target=player] [help]Renew; [harm] Mind Blast

This macro essentially casts Renew on your target if it’s friendly, and Mind Blast if it’s an opponent. I typically keybind this to ‘1’, so I can hit ‘1’ and use Mind Blast or Renew depending on who I’m targeting. Note: This is not meant to be spammed! Mind Blast has a cooldown, and Renew is a HoT.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#showtooltip Flash Heal

/cast [mod:shift, target=player] [help] Flash Heal; [harm] Smite

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#showtooltip Prayer Of Mending

/cast [mod:shift, target=player] [help] Prayer of Mending; [harm] Shadow Word: Pain

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#showtooltip Greater Heal

/cast [mod:shift, target=player] [help] Greater Heal; [harm] Devouring Plague

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are macros I definitely suggest using:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

/cast [target=Dogpriestx] Power Infusion

/cast Brutal Gladiator's Mooncloth Gloves

Insert YOUR name for Dogpriestx.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#showtooltip Shadow Word: Death

/stopcasting

/cast [modifier:alt, target=focus] Shadow Word: Death

/cast [nomodifier:alt] Shadow Word: Death

You want to deal out a killing blow quickly if one of your opponents are almost dead. Since it takes time switching, a focus macro works best.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#showtooltip Shadowfiend

/cast Shadowfiend

/petaggressive

/petattack

Not really needed anymore, but I still spam it just so my pet keeps attacking what I want.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

/cast [target=Dogpriestx] Fear ward

This is useful for fear warding yourself if you see a priest running at you, so you can catch his fear with fear ward rather than doing it before so he can dispel it and then fear. Insert your name for Dogpriestx.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

/target Party1

/target Party2

/target Dogpriestx

/target Arena1

/target Arena2

/target Arena 3

Those are all the targeting macros I use.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That pretty much covers the whole macros section These are the macros I feel are really required in order to perform well as a Disc Priest, but you may have your own personal preference and that’s perfectly fine.

UI Set up (+ Addons)

http://imageshack.us...0915504705.png/

This is my UI. It’s clean, and I can get what I want fairly quickly. I’m not saying that the Blizzard UI is the best, but it’s what I use. There are many other nicer UI’s out there, but the best one, in my opinion, is the one you set up yourself. Just don’t use this one…

http://www.google.co...s:0&tx=43&ty=81

Otherwise you won't know what is going on, and the chances are you’re going to fail in some way or another, so just make sure your UI is clean and that it’s easy to see everything around you!

Add-ons you might like to use: Gladius, OmniCC, Interupt Bar and Lose Control

These add-ons are mostly hidden, apart from Gladius, which is an extensive Arena Frames addon, and Yow’s face, which I wish was hidden half the time. This is just a general guide, I’m not saying which addons you should or should not use, I’m trying to stress the importance of a clean UI. The biggest mistake a healer can commit is staring at an HP bar, and get themselves killed.

Talents + Glyphs

First part of tree:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Improve Power Word: Shield - This increases damaged absorbed by your shield by 20%

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Twin Disc - This increases you shadow and holy spell damage and healing by 2%.

I choose to take one point in this. However you can take 3 points of this, and one point in Mental Agility.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mental Agility - Reduces mana cost of all your instant casts by 10%

1 or 3 points in this is needed it really depends what you want either that or Twin disc - I choose Mental Agility because most of your spells are instant. Power Word: Shield, Renew, etc.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Second tier:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inner Sanctum

All it does is reduce spell damage by 6%, but it’s nice because most good teams have a mage in it, and it scales nicely with Resilience.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Soul Warding - Makes your shield have no cooldown.

NEEDED. You need to be able to spam that shield on multiple targets, and have it ready for switches so that people can survive that initial burst.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Evangelism - Just bad generally at level 70 and 85 because you don't really use smite enough at level 85 due to mind spike and mind blast and at 70 Yow is a fanboi, so it’s a waste of talent points and you miss out on other things.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Archangel - You won't get the stacks for it at 85 that often and fast and at level 70 its a waste of talent points same as Evangelism.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Third part of the tree:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Power Infusion - Gives you casting speed for when nuking or healing, and can also be given to a friendly target so if you want your mages frost bolts to go boom boom then give it to him. Needed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inner Focus - Saves alot of mana and makes you immune to interupts with the later on talent - NEEDED. (Tip: Fake cast once or twice, and then inner focus heal and they will 5-6 times out of 10 interupt into it!)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Renewed Hope - This gives you a 10% more crit chance with healing all the time - Grace or weaken soul will be up on the target 100% of the time so this is obv NEEDED!.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atonement - The healing from it compared to the talent points you put into it and the mana just is not worth the trade off. Don't get it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fourth part of tree:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rapture - This is needed, gives you mana back from your power word: shield and with out inner will at level 70 this helps alot.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Borrowed Time - This gives you spell haste after casting power word shield - its needed because if you cast power word shield then go for a cast your casting faster to heal. As well as smart priest shield there dps and then start nuking and get the haste bonus for their next cast.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reflective Shield - 42% of power word: shield damage back at attacker with 2 points, I think that’s about 4-5k? Btw Yow is a fanboi, and I’m not logged in at the moment so I can't check but around that which isn't worth it - The trade off for the talent points is bad and 4-5k damage might seem a lot but it’s really not (won't even break a mages shield). NOT NEEDED!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fifth Part of the tree:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pain Suppression- Needed, and get the glyph so you can use it while stunned!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Strength of Soul - The effect to reduce weaken soul from this is amazing but the immune to silence with inner focus up is the main reason you take this. NEEDED!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Divine Aegis - 30% from the amount healed if crit is worth taking 11k crit with flash heal is 3300 and it stacks so you can get that up higher and higher. NEEDED!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Train of Thought - Not worth it - you just don't use greater healing enough for this to even be considered taking.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Focused Will - This is needed, 20% damage reduction when taking damage greater than 10% of your HP - Pretty much every second at 70.. even pets do that I think lol!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Grace - Needed, penance gives this the 3 stacks on its own and gives you 8% more healing on the target so shield > penance > flash heal = 10% more crit, 8% more healing, haste on penance and if you crit you get your absorb!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6th part of the tree

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Barrier - This basically gives 25% damage reduction to people inside it for 10 seconds and makes you immune to push back on casting (melees hitting you for example and your casts go back). This is up to you, I might drop this and get an extra point in Twin disc because I mean in arena your mobile and kiting a lot so unless it’s a duel for example you’re not actually in it for 10seconds and neither is your team. However it has its uses e.g. Timing it just before a deepfreeze and surviving a deepfreeze (All mages start gasping like: WAIT YOU CAN ACUTALLY SURVIVE A DEEPFREEZE!?)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Glyphs

Glyph of Penance - Reduces cool down by 2 seconds - Really needed.

Glyph of Power Word: Shield - Instanly heals 20% of the over all amount - Needed.

Glyph of Desperation - Allows use of pain supp in stuns. Needed!

Glyph of Fear Ward - Reduces cd by 1min - Needed!

These are my glyphs if you feel any others might be worth taking please post here and I'll discuss it with you / edit this with them as well if I feel its a good glyph for whatever reason you posted it for!

Class mechanics

Ok let me get this straight. You are not going to be able to pick up your Disc Priest and become rank1 glad within 15 minutes. I can name 4 or 5 of the best Disc Priests in the world who have been playing their class for years, and still have not fully mastered that class, because of it’s complexities.

However, I can give you some very important tips on the mechanics.

The most important tip I can give you is: MANAGE YOUR GLOBALS!!!!

I can't stress this enough!!!! If you’re casting flash heal, and if a mage is casting sheep on you at the same time, you won’t be able to SWD and break your CC if you continue with that heal.

For example: You’re standing at the boxes in Dal Sewer and your rogue has been sheeped 3 times and now has full Diminishing Returns, meaning they can’t sheep him anymore. However, you haven’t been sheeped, and your trinket is on CD. Your rogue is at 30% health and the mage is casting sheep on you as you are casting heal. CANCEL YOUR HEAL and cast SWD so that the rebounding damage break the Polymorph, and thus frees you up to shield or heal your rogue! If you continued with the heal, it would have brought your rogue to 70% but then he would have died while you were crowd controlled.

Breaking Crowd Control ALWAYS has higher priority than healing.

Managing cool downs is the difference between a good priest, and an OP priest.

Viable Arena Comps

2v2:

Best Comps:

Disc / Mage - Mainly because mage is OP.

Disc / Rogue - Mainly because rogue is OP.

Good Comps:

Disc / Death Knight - Works quite well.

Disc / Ele shaman - Works if played well.

Disc / Feral - Works quite well.

Weaker Comps:

Disc / Hunter - Its weaker but can be done if played right.

Disc / Warlock - Its weaker but can be done if played right

Disc/Warr - It's weaker but Stunngix thinks it's awesome, must explain why he's such a badass.

.

All classes are viable with a disc to be honest, but if you want anything like rank one you’re better off running with the two best comps I listed, however if you want to roll with a friend everything is viable it’s just adapting to how you play it. If you want general tips on how to play a certain comp post here and I will reply or make a video about that comp for you.

Thanks for reading this guide and I hope it helped.

If anyone needs help add: georgecassell1 on skype and I'll be happy to help!

Also if people like it, I’ll make a shaman guide, or a mage guide, depending on the responses I get for this one.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And that's it. Hope this helps someone, it certainly has helped me.

Warr / disc!!!

Seriously? I thought warrs sucked?

Oh well if you say so..../add "Warr/disc comp"

I`m not saying the content of the "guide" is not accurate or up-to-date, but here is some sound advice:

Sort out the headers.
Add some colour to break it up other than just text and a few lines.
Add more details to the setups section, more detail on points of strength/weakness, etc...
Add more links especially for gear, BiS sets and any others (especially gear).
Macro section can be condensed.
Add links to addons that can be downloaded.
Get it proof read for grammar/readability for gods sake.

As it stands it is a rough draft at best. ;)

Sorry mr. I post random shit on other peoples guides but have none myself? this is my guide and your mirin by reading it - I did this guide in 1-2hours? now lets answer all your points that you so kindly put in there bro.

1. Headers? Headers? Its a free fucking guide wtf do you think I am? I don't get paid for this shit you know.
2. Add some colour? Yet again, would you rather I spend the 2hours I made it jazzing it up with aww pretty colours or just putting more detail in? I guess more detail would help you break 1800 but w.e
3. BiS Gear links? Just get full pvp gear and gem Resi and you can get high if you got skill.. who cares about BiS gear.
4. Condensed Macro section? LOLJK.
5. Addon that can be downloaded? Only addon I can seriously recommend is Gladius but even that isn't needed.
6. Grammer? Who cares about grammer please.. come on man this is a game on a forum its not a fucking essay jesus.

Lets sum up:

You read through my whole guide that I did for FREE in my own FREE time to help some people that may need it, then you sit there and point out ALL the bad points of the guide with ZERO positive feedback at all, on your account you have 1068 posts and only 22 likes received .. I can see that you post this "constructive" feedback all the time.

If you want a real indepth guide with "AWWW COLOURRS" and other pointless fucking shit.. then please pay me £50 and i'll teach you for an hour.. and even better I'll do up this guide for you? how about that..

HOLLA AT ME BRO.

You posted a guide (albeit I was unaware it was a repost if I am honest). Then you go off on a nerdrage cause people point out how it cold be easier to read/follow and with suggestions. Then you attempt to post abusive shit and call people out on stuff when you know nothig about them. Haha.

You are just another perfect excuse of this wonderful bracket. You have proven it before and are proving it again that it is infested with trollish/moronic pre pubescent idiots.

I am not going to get involved with another clear attempt at starting a flamewar with someone you know zero about. Don't want feedback of any type? Don't post it, simple.

Save your breath with a reply I won't reply to your wonderful "guide" again. Rage on and keep being delusional. ;)

P.S. Your a bit late that was a 3 minute post from about a week and a half ago.
