How important is gear?

Okay, I know that gear is really important, that's what makes a twink, but how much does it play a role?

For example, I've been taking a look at the "example" twinks on this site and pretty much all of them have full BoA gear (white/yellow letters).

Now lets say someone doesn't have complete BoA gear, what if they have the best Binds when equipped/binds when picked up gear and some BoA gear to go with it?

Do you think they are a lot less likely to win in a fight with somebody that has the best gear?

Sometimes best in slot items aren't necessarily heirlooms, for example the max SP head at level 20 - 29 is a BoE from engineering. There's lots of pieces that might be better than BoA in one or two stats but generally heirlooms are better over-all.

Near BiS vs BiS does not really matter. The one with more skill wins. However, full questing greens vs a near BiS and greens will obviously lose

Almost all Heirlooms can be purchased with gold now.
Technically, you could "fish" them up if you had the time. Many of them anyway.

Gold is so cheap nowadays, you can buy enough to purchase all heirlooms at an affordable price.

I meant "fish" them up with darkmoon daggermaws. Turn them in for the quest item. Do the quest and voila 100 tickets!
100 fish-> quest item-> quest -> 100 tickets
Buy heirlooms from Darkmoon Faire vendor.

This can be done on each toon!!
Perhaps I shall make a "guide".
