I run many of the old instances for my twinks weekly, and the mini pets that they've now implemented sell really well. I've been able to mostly rely on that for income lately.
I'm on Moon Guard US, an RP server. Moon Guard has one of the most expensive economies and one of the largest in WoW. What I do is run instances where fancy looking BoEs drop, and then put them on the AH for 200-500, even if they're greens. Why? Roleplayers, including I, will buy crappy greens at very high prices just because they look good for their RP sets.
I actually make a really nice amount of gold with absolutely no farming, without even being on a computer. I just use my armory app to buy and sell auctions. It's unbelievable how many noobs post things on AH not knowing there worth. Often people post auctions and forget to add zeros. My best deal was at the beginning of 5.3 I bought item lvl 502 lionheart reborn for 40 gold and sold it for 43,000! The Guy forget some zeros... I almost felt bad; happens to the best of us. Last night I sold a blade of wizardry for 8,000 that I bought for 450 gold. I guess I just recognize auctions that are posted to low and what's rare and what's not after playing for 8 years. Also I run sgi for my lvl 25 guild and get an okay amount of cashflow from players I don't even know.
On my 90s I usually make my gold through raiding, however, lately I've been attempting to craft items... Enchants and such of the like sell rather well. One can also farm rares, or do dailies (on multiple toons).
I buy Potion of Treasure Finding for 60-80g in AH then I use that potion to farm embersilk cloths at Deepholm (Fractured Point). Makes 3k gold per hour (Sell Embersilk Cloths for 30-40g each stack). Easy and not boring
