Gearing outside of AH question

Sorry in advance, total Twink noob here.
So I finally decided to put some of my gold Ive been saving on my main into my twink who had no gear. I've been trying to read a bit and understand how gearing works but when I look at an armoury such as frost, the gear is ilvl 890 etc, but most in the AH is 845.
So my question is, can I start with 845 gear and work my way up by getting higher ilvl gear through dungeons or questing? How do I go about getting better gear outside of buying on AH?

The goal is NOT to get gear through questing, because I believe the max item level for quest gear is 800 (correct me if I’m wrong). The reason you mostly see 845 and his are 890 is because those titanforged variants are extremely rare (which makes them more expensive). Many 101s who have really high item levels often transfer multiple times to obtain these rare gear pieces.

To answer your question. The AH has your best gear. You’ll just have to wait for them to appear/get them at the right price. Its a little late to begin a 101 with BFA quickly approaching, but if you are really passionate maybe that will play in your favor (as gear prices come down).

Tomomori, this may come as a surprise, but generally your best bet to find gear is to either transfer to the servers that have it at a price you can afford (by making level 1 toons to scout the AH), or to play the AH on your home server to attempt to get pieces that are there. Some of the best pieces that I have gotten were from sitting at the AH with a sniper addon loaded so I could see new pieces being posted so I could buy them out (totally ok as long as it isnt automated). So my advice to you is to start with the 840 (base iL pieces) and start there. Don't worry about getting expensive pieces for some time, as the difference in iL is only really noticeable once you've gotten 860+ pieces. I wish you good luck! P.S. Thanks for the reply! Seems like I started a little late, maybe best to wait and see what happens after BFA.
Curious if starting at 840 allows for any solo content?

I assume that if gear is appearing on the AH, then it's being looted from somewhere. So, why not get a gear-farming toon to 110 and start farming that gear ourselves? I know it's rare/low drop rate stuff, but hasn't that always been the underlying assumption of twink gear: it's rare, but so superior that farming it is just part of the twinking context?

I've got a 101 hunter that's not quite half geared in 840-ish stuff I've bought on the AH. Now, I'm broke in-game. Deciding between WoW tokens (real money), farming gold to buy AH gear, or farming the gear myself... I'm wondering why not just farm it myself?

Thoughts?

Yeah good point. Token is so much though. You're basically buying one or two pieces for 20 real bucks.

I think a combination approach would work best! The positive of farming is that if you get pieces that you do not need, you can sell them on the AH to help pay for pieces that you DO need. The drop rates are low for epics. They are even lower for the titanforged variants. And then even lower for the ones you actually need.

There was an old argument back in the day on whether to farm a.. Shadowfang for instance, or spend your time farming mats or shuffling gems and buy the weapon with the profit. It all comes down to what your preference is. Would you rather see an increase in your gold day over day and know you are closer to your goal, or do you get more excitement knowing that “the next run” could drop the item you need. This may not be helpful to you but months ago I often find that if people couldn't pay for the runs, they paid me with 101 BoE's. I kept the ones I could use and sold the ones I didnt use. This became very lucrative when guilds hired me to boost their alts. However, these days as BfA is getting closer, it'll be rough to do. The only other method I have heard about farming 101 BoEs were multiboxing trash mob raids with a bunch of 110s or getting a group of people farming imps.
