Finally changing classes, and a confession... (Rogue)

Preeztess

Legend
So I decided to make an F2P rogue as my first true toon other than my beloved Preeztess.

But... I confess that I use the WASD keys for movement. This is going to hinder my l33t rogue-ness skills.

I watched...

this video

...and realized I need to be able to move like that.

How do I break out of 5 years of muscle memory?

:(

Sincerely,

Ashamed in Ashenvale

I know this might be a bit off-topic but I swear you're like the 20th person I know who has played a priest for a long time and then decided to make a rogue.

o_O

As someone who plays on a laptop, I know what you mean. The advice on this site seems to be to unbind those keys, level up a new toon, and only use the mouse to move. I've only managed this for like 10 lvls on a few different toons. Honestly, I don't think that 20 lvls is enough to break the habbit. Especially because a large part of that is either questing or doing dungeons. I always end up quitting anyways because my mouse lights up red and it is too interesting to the baby and then I'm trying to fight her off with one hand, which is more hindering than before.

I guess the nice thing is, you won't have to worry about using your mouse to be constantly hovering over the healthbars any more. Good luck!

hmm... 1:19 in the clip the rogue literally ignores the EFC, just a cast away and eagerly just tries to kill the paladin instead :p

OnT: I know many good rogues that rols with WASD, I don't 100% see your point 0.o If you mean that you paddle, as in not strafing you can just bind your A and D to strafe instead of Q and E.

GL!

Edit: Now saw the post before mine :) To get used to use your mouse is just something you'll have to practice and practice, no shortcuts for it. You're on AP so just duel 20 people a day by only using your mouse to move.

I believe it's fairly acceptable to use your keys once in a while, e.g. when backstrafing to dodge attacks etc.

Practice. It won't take you five years to learn.

Rather than strafing, what I like to do is use one hand on the mouse for movement and a couple buttons, which depends on your mouse, and the other hand for binds. Rather than the stilted strafing movement, I like to dance around people so that I'm constantly attacking from behind. Obviously this only works well if they're slowed or you're sprinting. You'd be surprised how natural it becomes after a very short period of time. Choose your targets well. Sap when needed. Open up when you have a good chance of a kill.

Circle strafing works much better on a ranged class than a rogue. Rogue strafing is kind of pointless really.

Neilyo uses WASD, not sure what you're getting at. You can move perfectly on a rogue using the same movement keys, and strafing is 100% essential.

If I'm constantly holding the two mouse buttons down to run forward, how do I target people?

Also, it helps that I have this mouse:

You don't. Why? Because it's a REALLY BAD IDEA. On a rogue, you need to BACKSTRAFE. I watched, the video, that rogue uses A and D or other keys to BACKSTRAFE. You're gimping yourself by changing the way you move because you need to BACKSTRAFE. It is 110% essential on a rogue to BACKSTRAFE.

Good luck, and have funnot gimping yourself by BACKSTRAFING.

EDIT:
I hope I've made myself clear that what people are telling you is a really really really bad idea, and you should stop listening to them right now.

I like the part where I need to backstrafe...

lol

...so I need to walk backwards while strafing?

I'm trying to pinpoint the voice I'm reading this in, Powerthirst maybe?

But yeah, if you don't use A/D for strafe, I'd recommend switching that and opening up Q/E for extra binds. Or changing movement to ESDF for a couple more buttons if you're up for it. Don't worry about the muscle memory for re-keybinding, it'll come along pretty quickly once you start playing with new binds. The biggest lingering issue for me was when I had to stop and think/look at my keyboard, then I'd press the wrong button. It won't take long to get past that though, just a slight adjustment phase.

Well, imo QWE vs WASD is personal preference about where you like your hand to rest on the keyboard. ESDF does open a few more keys, but makes modifiers like shift and alt harder to reach. The keys you use to move are personal preference, just remember to always strafe :)

lolol :(((
someone buy me a naga :((( lol too expensive
anyways just try to circle strike (using q and e with mouse turning)
and then youll get a feel of it
then you can do some insane stuff to casters as a melee to prevent them to cast.

and be a NE rogue! you dont regret it
