Explorer sans XP (Elorer?)

Hi all - talk of obtaining the Explorer title using NetLimiter caught my eye recently. I'm undecided on whether I'll use this method on a toon, but I did decide to run a proof of concept test around Ghostlands.

Since I'm running WoW under OS X, NetLimiter was out - instead I cobbled together some IPFW rules to block incoming and allow outgoing packets. I wait until I'm near death, pop the ruleset script and then I'm free to run around while the mob attacking me sits idle.

So far, so good - first time I went to an undiscovered section of the map and got the discovery notification, but no XP increase, great! However it didn't register on my Explore Ghostlands achievement list and when I disconnected then logged back in, I'd gained no XP and uncovered no map areas. Since then, I can't even get the discovery notification to come up - I'm just running around an empty gameworld for no benefit.

Has anybody tried this without NetLimiter? Any ideas what's different between my approach and the NetLimiter way?

The key is only limiting Incoming packets -- if you limit outgoing packets as well, your computer won't be able to tell the server your location etc.

have you tried running netlimiter under WinE?

Outgoing packets weren't blocked - I actually put in a rule to explicitly allow them, just in case. Might be that I'm abusing IPFW in some way and it's still blocking the outgoing data.

Could be a good idea to try Wine - though since IPFW runs in kernel space, it might be a bridge too far, I'll trawl around some of the documentation.

man , this is riscky, i mean i have 150 rested until ding, if one of this exploring gives me xp i am doomed...

I wouldn't be too surprised if they already fixed it, given that it's an exploit that seems relatively easy to patch.

It's not an exploit, and to patch it would mean getting XP while dead.
