EP value = value of a stat compared to other stats
Hi, this is just gonna be a discussion about how good certain stats are for Balance druids at level 39. This can of course be extended to other caster classes aswell as one tends to find the same sort of talents within each tree for casters.
The first thing im going to say is that Balance druids don't tend to worry about Hit too much come 4.01 thanks to: Balance of Power - Spell - World of Warcraft .
This leaves Balance druids with three key stats: Intellect, Haste and Crit.
1 Intellect gives 1 spell power and 1/37 crit%
1 crit rating gives 1/9 crit%
and 1 haste rating gives 1/6 haste%
If you are reading this and thinking that intellect is by far the most important stat, you are right. However, the haste and crit are often the stats that decide which items are BiS.
Also, i will be talking mostly about druid dots in this thread as Druids have much less survivablity since both Natures Grasp and Barkskin have disappeared. This means that it tends to be better to focus your gear on the damage of your dots rather than nuking potential.
Now for the maths.
For the effect of spellpower on a spell one must work out how much damage a spell does.
according to WowWiki, the damage of a dot is: duration/15 * spellpower + base damage
so for both insect swarm and moonfire, it will be 18/15x + 11(for moonfire) or 16(for insect swarm)
where x is your spell power
we divide this by the number of ticks to get (1.2x + 99)/9 (for moonfire) and (1.2x + 144)/9 for IS
the next thing to take into account is Shooting Stars - Spell - World of Warcraft .
so the overall average damage of the dot is: chance for starsurge proc * damage of starsurge proc + damage of dot tick.
the chance is 0.04, the damage is calculated by casttime/3.5 * x (spellpower) + base
average base damage = 174 casttime = 2 secs so 4x/7 + 174
all of this * 0.04 + damage of a moonfire tick (for example) comes out to (82x + 9429)/525
to work out haste is much simpler, thanks to haste affecting dots now, the (ceiling(number of ticks * haste) = new number of ticks. So, let H be haste and (100 + H)/100 * 9 for ticks. The idea is that the dot should happen in roughly the same amount of time so the length doesnt vary too much.
For crit, we get 200% increased damage thanks to Moonfury - Spell - World of Warcraft
so the average damage increase is crit * 2 plus normal damage or:
(C + 50)/50
so, multiplying all these together we get: (for H, C and X (spell power))
(82x + 9429)/525 * (100 + H)/100 * 9 * (C + 50)/50
simplyfied: (82x + 9429)(100 + H)(C + 50)/23625
if i round the Spellpower part to a nice number it comes out to be:
(x + 115)(100 + h)(50 + c)/2625
if we plug in 350 spell power, 15 crit and 15 haste we get 1324 which seems correct.
In terms of finding an EP score, we can forget the 2625 because it doesnt make a difference to the ratios of the values.
so i will call (x + 115)(h + 100)(c + 50)/100000 (a nicer number)
the value of an item in terms of damage.
This is the end of Part 1, i will put out part 2 Tomorrow hopefully - this will explain how it can be used with Metamorfos's spreadsheet to determine BiS Items.
Remember that the crit and haste values are %s so dont plug in haste and crit ratings.
