Drop-rate, size of loot table, class-specific (or not), farmable (or not) and probably other factors vary across the expansions and the type of rare. e.g Apexis Crystal rares () in WoD are farmable, but the others are a one-off, 100% drop rate and not class-specific (if I remember correctly)...
