Question on Rogue specs, Assassination vs Combat vs Sub

I've been looking into the Rogue class and was wondering how viable each of the specs are currently for 29's. Basically, I don't care about duels or arena, I'm solely looking for the most efficient spec for WSG, specifically for offense and flag returns.

I scanned a few Rogue threads here, most are about gear, but I found some way back about different specs. Some claimed that Assassination was the way to go. Does this hold any merit? From what I gather, Assassination has respectable damage, but lacks mobility. Are there any Assassination Rogues out there who are playing games now or have played games recently that can comment on how reliable that spec can be in WSG?

I figured Combat would be rather interesting. Improved Sprint, while not as reliable as Shadowstep, would work well with mobility issues. As far as the last point, I was actually thinking of putting it in improved Gouge instead of Revealing Strike. I'm not sure if it's really a smart move, but I figured Gouge was a rather important CC move, and adding an extra second as well as lowering its energy cost seemed pretty useful.

Mostly everyone else seems to be going Sub, and I'm assuming it largely has to do with Shadowstep. Obviously having beefy Ambushes and Hemo is definitely nice too.

Any Rogues out there currently playing who would like to give their opinion on what spec they prefer and why would be great. I know the generic "play around with them and pick what you like" will pop up, but I'd like to hear from others on what they picked and why they like it.

there is myself and i think 1 other rogue (Valotian i believe is how its spelled) who are combat in 29s right now. iirc there are no mut rogues and the rest are sub for obvious reasons.

myself, i went with combat for a specific purpose, which is killing casters, mainly healers who are with the enemy fc. the kick silence, reduced gouge energy, plus having arcane torrent make almost any caster cry. i prefer imp gouge over RS because your finisher isnt going to be the majority of your dmg as combat, your white hits will actually do quite a bit, so having over the 5% hit doesnt actually hurt your output like it would with other specs that are more reliant on dmg from specials.

mut is actually quite energy intensive so you will find yourself waiting for energy so you can mutilate again. the 15% movement speed is nice though and clod blood comes in handy for finishing off a low target.

sub, well, everyone is sub because they like to use 2 buttons...ambushb + evis. that's all you need. boring imo

Ah thanks for the input. Glad to hear from a Combat rogue, that always seemed like an interesting tree. From the way you are describing it, it sounds like a pretty decent spec for flag returning no? Of course I would be going Alliance so I wouldn't have access to your racial silence.

Checking out your gear, I see you have access to grandfathered weapons. I'm kind of at a rut with a main hand choice. Zealot seems nice with the highest top end damage, but the stats are useless. The Butcher has better stats, with a slightly lower damage range. I'd probably go BoA sword if I ever obtain enough points, but for now I'm looking at one of those two swords. Do you have any suggestions? I figure for offhand I'd just go Sentinel's Blade.

I would not try out muti. It was good for a while but when they swung that giant nerfbat at massively overpowered rogue damage a couple patches ago they destroyed muti for most of the lower levels. The damage is "respectable" and the mobility is nill. It is also energy intensive (see above)

Its fun, but just not very good.

as far as a spec for returning flags, sub would be more suited to get the actual return, combat is more effective at locking down an fc's healer for a long duration between gouges and kicks...vanish + cs for another 4 secs too.

i think you'd actually be better off with the boa mace instead of the sword due to the hit. i'd probably go with butcher without any boas just because its only 9 dmg in the dif but the stats are much better.

edit: i never noticed that about skib before i guess
