How do you decide which gear is better?

I’ve noticed this phenomenon for some time. For example, with these two leggings: their stats are displayed clearly, but the 'differences' shown don’t match up ie. instead of +10 agil, its +2, and+3 mastery on changing but its -3. On my Hunter, when I wear the iLvl 158 leggings, my Aimed Shot damage is 3,116 and Rapid Shot is 6,399. But when I switch to the iLvl 191 leggings (which have much higher stats, even without gems), my Aimed Shot drops to 3,097 and Rapid Shot to 6,359. What’s causing this? Do we no longer rely on item level or even the direct stat values?

About two weeks ago, there were changes to all item stats. Although the stat numbers visibly changed (and players can see them), the gear actually retained their old hidden values — but that’s a separate issue for another time. Right now, something’s clearly wrong with these two leggings (and many other cases like them).

Were those legs originally one of those super underbudgeted main stat ones?

Do you recall the stats from prior?

When equipped does your agility actually increase by what the tooltip says?

When switching from ilvl 158 to ilvl 191, the character's Agility stat increased by 3 — not 2 and not 10, lololololol. These two leggings weren’t affected much by previous stats (only slightly), but I just wanted to show that all the stats are completely messed up now. What you see on the screen might not match what you’re actually getting.

Here’s an example of a cloak that still has the old stats but displays the new stats instead. Two weeks ago, all stat differences between gear (e.g., Agility, Stamina, tertiary stats) were mathematically correct—but now they’re not.

The ilvl 183 cloak previously had -2 Mastery (yes, this cloak deducts 2 Mastery, lololol). So, comparing +12 Mastery (ilvl 158) and -2 Mastery (ilvl 183), the difference should be +14 Mastery (which is correct here in the photo). However, the Agility difference was previously +4, but now it shows -1 (as seen in the photo).

Agility Calculation when gear is equiped:
  • Character’s base Agility (without cloak): 305
  • With ilvl 158 cloak: Should be 305 + 9 + 8 = 322, but it displays 323.
  • With ilvl 183 cloak: Should be 305 + 13 = 318, but it displays 316.
the new WOW maths lolololol

The 3 Agi instead of 2 is probably because of the "Amor Skills" passive (5% primary bonus for wearing all the correct armor type that you get at lvl 27). The 2 Agi must have added just enough to your total to give you 1 extra point.

But yeah, there are a lot of bugged tooltips right now, there was discussion about it on the 30s discord with all of the ICC gear being bugged like this and most of the Sunwell Plateau gear actually being better. The in-game comparison like your screens show that says "If you replace this item, the following changes will occur" seems to be the most accurate way to compare gear right now.

Those players who do use the Shift key will not know there is such a difference if they simply look at both gears separately before replacing them. Which also means that players cannot take the tert stats at face value

Yeah I was thinking armor skills for a minute too but since both pieces here were the same type then it probably wasn’t it

I wouldn’t trust anything on blizz tooltips at this point. Only what you can see on your main stat and ability tooltips at this point

I always thought it weird that wrath, cata and some mop gear at least had those super underbudeted, sometimes negative main stat items. Those items must have gotten lost in the sauce of blizzards spaghetti algorithmic gear scaling over the years.
