I've been afk for some time, and come back to see a lot of banned users.. wtf is happening?

Heard bout bisnation, went there checked the epeen stroking/trolling/flaming threads, and I don't get it, what's the problem in having TI as the respectable place to tell new ppl about for guides etc, and bis nation for the irrelevant troll/flaming?

I mean TI won't let us have drama and call everybody else retards, now we have a site that looks to me as having name calling a belittling ppl as a core concept, so we have 1 site for each purpose..

What is the problem in that, why the bans etc? What happened?

A lot of people with non-mainstream opinions got banned, and many just lost patience. As far as what triggered the bans, you'd have to ask the mods because I don't really any radical change in the tone of posts since when I first started reading TI, just more bans.

But why now? Iircc those ppl always were very opinionated and vocal about it, but ppl used to just giggle at them and move on, np
What was so bad that so many bans wee needed? Perms?
Some1 told me they had ddos'd TI, true?

Apparently the site policy is zero-tolerance on being mean to other users now. Not even kidding. The fact that there are some new mods now might contribute to the risen amount of bans lately aswell, since they might be a bit too eager to use their newly accumulated powers. Not saying they are, but it MIGHT be ^^ (plz dont ban if u see this, mod)

Well you're wrong. This mod is the one who has asked the other mods to back off of the 19s and 29s forum, to let you guys have a little breathing room on being able to have your interpersonal squabbles. This mod is also the one who re-wrote the relevant portions of the CoC such that it was the intent of your words that was being looked at rather than the specific words you said, so that your actual speech was more free as long as both parties in the squabble agreed that it wasn't abusive. (There are still restrictions on being explicitly vulgar or using the F-bomb, per Shane himself.) And yet this mod is the one that got raked over the coals recently for entering a thread and simply reassuring people who were getting concerned that it was too hostile, that in fact everything was okay per the new rules. The ones that I promoted, in order to help all you out. So please don't spread that "the mods are power hungry" rhetoric, it's false and it's damaging to what we're trying to do for you guys here.

To answer the OP, first of all you know that mod actions aren't supposed to be discussed but I'm going to bring it up myself to set a few things straight. One of those popular upstanding posters you're talking about directly threatened Shane, and thus Shane banned him personally. Subsequently, he and a few other upstanding posters began a campaign of spamming our forums with messages on all forums with profanities and trashing the site. And when that wasn't enough, they then DDoSed the site until we had to put up our DDoS shield for a full day.

So please, until you know what's actually going on, don't throw around accusations that it's somehow our fault or that we're changing and being too heavy handed. We are human beings just like the rest of you guys, and we're doing our damned best to keep this boat on an even keel despite how badly some people want to rock it. You could really try being on our side and giving us some credit and some trust. If I haven't earned that by now for all the positive changes I've implemented for you since coming on board, I don't know what will. But if you just listen to the rumor mill and don't pay attention to what's actually going on, then you won't see the truth I guess.

This is where I would normally close this thread because it's discussing mod actions which is not allowed. But as a continued show of wanting to bridge the gap between the users, and the handful of users who have been chosen to keep the forums from going insane, I'm going to let it stay open for the purpose of allowing any respectful polite followup questions you may have. But if anyone makes a post that is any way abusive or makes unfounded inflammatory posts, it will get closed. I'm annoyed at having done so much to change the demeanor here only to have these same old ideas and false impressions continue to float around, so if someone needs to ask something to help them get it better, now's the time.

That's what I heard aswel, but sounded a bit far fetched, especially given the posting nature of some of the banned users. Idc rlly, but hate missing out on the drama xD

Thx for the explanation, I figured there were more to the story than I had heard.
Shame the threads got deleted tho, no threads generate more traffic in 19 section of TI, than drama, I'm not sure it creates more games, but at least those used to make me visit TI alot.
Unless others want this open you can lock it if needed

Relax there buddy, I wasn't aiming my post at any particular mod (think there have been at least 2 promotions lately, hence why I was talking in plural). I also said that it MIGHT be this way, because how on earth would I know what the moderating team is doing between closed curtains. I haven't been checking the public banlist, so wouldn't know who's handing out bans to who, and I honestly don't care. I generally like to draw my conclusions from my own observations, not from the rumours that the kool kids like to spread.

Just getting the image from many of your posts, that enforcing that people follow the CoC has been strictened, and every other post I see has been edited to remove/replace some naughty words. It hasn't been strict like this for ages, and suddenly after new people have become mods, the forum has changed to be a lot more family-friendly (xd). I remember seeing dozens of pages of shitstorms with naughty words flying here and there, people hating and bashing each other like there's no tomorrow and very rarely did anyone get banned for that. Not that I necessarily considered it to be better that way.

Are you starting to see where I'm drawing my conclusions from?

Anyways, I honestlyhave nothing against you or Herneith, or against the ways you moderate the boards. However, you can't say that the enforcing of the forums hasn't gone up, along with the rate of bans being handed. My earlier post wasn't wrong, maybe not worded the best possible way but yeah, can't always bother to analyze the shit I write for an hour before hitting the send button. Especially when I've pulled an all nighter like a retard, like now. I'm outta here, peace

this must be new laws (rules).. becuz i remember the days (within the last year) where people were allowed to be mean as fuck continuously, i didnt care, till a certain point, but i promise it truly didnt stop a certain group of players from doing it to me until i literally PM'd some and told them about me as a person, living with severe illnesses, mental illnesses, (questions as to why they had it out for me, etc)..... meaning it literally went on long enough for me to get tired of argueing with people being dicks to me to actually write out a paragraph about my real life to a complete stranger that talks shit on me nonstop..... bans were nowhere to be found just a short 6-9ish months ago so this whole banning thing is really really opposite spectrum of how it was half a year ago even.

edit: this is just overall the idea the consistancy of bans shouldnt be changed or altered that drastically in such a short time cuz idk maybe activity would be better

Allright, fair reply. It's unfortunate timing that some really nasty things went down behind the scenes at the same time that the new mods came on. Part of the reason the new mods were brought on was to help lighten the load and cover the work that the other mods were overwhelmed by. It's possible that in the past some things got by without comment simply because we were under-staffed. The rate of reporting hasn't really changed in a long time though.

The CoC also hasn't changed in a long time either, with two major exceptions. And they're both relevant to the conversation. The first was when Shane added the language to the CoC that gave major penalties for cursing, vulgarity, trolling, and harassment. He was forced to implement those changes because this place had gotten too out of control. Those were the free-wheeling times that you might remember. I was glad that some ground rules had been laid out, but I also saw that now that those rules were in place, there was some real resentment among the user-base because they felt like it was being taken too far. That was right before I came on board.

The second major change to the CoC was the new verbiage that I wrote and submitted to Shane, who was happy to approve to clarify and smooth out the rulings. The changes I made were to emphasize the meaning and intent behind what you guys say, the way that it is taken by the other person (so that two friends shit-talking each other could still do so without fear of being censored) and to lighten the punishment to a lesser ban for repeated infractions. There are still standards that Shane wants to uphold, and I agree with him that we can't have this be the Wild West, but I like to think that the new latitude we're giving you guys, along with some reasonableness on your part, will mean that we can all live in relative peace and harmony.

If I am not mistaken, BISnation started off as a blog only site so that it would not devolve into the mess that TI had become. And now it seems that it has become a haven for it. Tsk tsk...

There will be a time on TI where the only thing moderators will moderate is other posts from fellow moderators, because no1 will post. Glad I'm not that active anymore, because surely I would be banned in a heartbeat.

Some unfortunate things happened and the 19 community got upset, I get that. But instead of getting angry and acting out/breaking rules in frustration (as what happened), it's better to instead discuss your concerns with a staff member and be patient while the concerns are looked into and dealt with. The site did get ddosed and, at this point, it doesn't really matter who was behind it. The whole ordeal is over and done with, and we need to move forward as a community. I'm closing this now, as there don't seem to be any follow-up questions and the comments are getting a bit rude.
