WoW in another language?

Legend
Hey, all.

The last few years have largely seen me out of the game, with no intention to return.
However, my hobby [and a pivotal portion of my academic pursuits] involves the acquisition of other languages.
I grew up with WoW - a frightening calculation being that I spent more time in the game than I will on my BA. That being said - I'm very comfortable with the game, and I also see a lot of practical use for the game. One of these uses came to mind when I was chatting with my best friend [whom I arena'd with for several seasons], and he is completely fluent in both English and Arabic - the English came from playing WoW, and being forced to write and speak on the clock in what is essentially virtual immersion.

Earlier, there were complaints of there being so many Spanish speakers in f2p bg's - my goal would be to join this community, make a group of amigos, and spend time in the game interacting with them in Spanish. It's not perfect, but it is conversation experience and immersion to some extent.. and my Spanish is good enough that I basically just need time practicing the language to make it more natural for me to use. WoW also beats the hell out of a textbook.

What are your thoughts on this?
Have any of you done anything like this?

An early thanks,
Volsci

I think that yes, it'd help you practice your writing in spanish. Anything you want to get good at, needs practice. When I first started playing the game, I was scared to write in english 'cause I thought people would laugh at me D: But almost everyone was really nice and helpful. I personally don't know the community in latin american servers, but I hope they can help you c:

Also, if you want to practice your conversational spanish, I could talk to you on mumble, since my native language is spanish. Just a small warning, I'm kinda shy x)

I can definitely relate to that! I study at an international university in Japan, and even though my Spanish is more than good enough to hold conversations.. talking with the native speakers is intimidating. Especially the really excited ones that speak fast :p It's amazing how much more difficult it is to converse with a native speaker than a learner of the language.

I'd also love to chat with you :) I am in the process of installing Mumble.
I actually work as an English tutor, so I can hopefully be of assistance, also ^^

Just a quick note - I'm put together a really hashy tossup to play on Linux, since I accidently fucked over my Windows partition - but that's another story.

Anyhow, I've spent about an hour in the game. I'm on an EU f2p trial at the moment [Fugue @ Zul'Jin if anyone is interested ^^ demo lock inc].
Just a few quick introductory thoughts:
-There is a lot of vocab to learn, and it's wonderful for that. There is a lot of useful vocab to learn - and I've been retaining it really easily, just because I'm entertained and having fun, plus the game tends to repeat vocab regularly. [I'm making a point to read the full text of every quest, etc]. There is of course an outstanding amount of interesting but not-really-useful vocab to go around.. I'll probably never use words like abbot, imp, or siphon in any Spanish conversation that I have.
- There is a lot of wonderful voice acting in the game - if you have trouble listening in your target language, this is a good opportunity to begin. If you need it, the quest text / whatnot is there, also, to follow along.
- I haven't ran into any other players yet [3 am local time on a low population Spanish server, lol]. I'm excited to get into dungeons and chat, though - my goal over the next few days is to get to level 15 to do so.

Anyhow, so far it definitely seems like a viable and enjoyable way to expand my vocabulary and improve some grammar, if nothing else.

Playing on a spanish realm or somesuch? Yes, please.
Using a spanish client? Translations are shit.

That makes 2.. xP

But I learned English before Spanish..
The flaw to that----> my Spanish is terrible .... :(

I am now ashamed of myself... :(

I had a really cool conversation with a Brazilian in the nelf starting zone about AGMs. I never did end up rolling a that smurf on Gallywix, but sometimes I wish I had.

Immersing yourself in a virtual environment is a nice idea, though I do have one question:

While immersing yourself in a virtual environment will help with your Spanish writing, would it also improve your ability to speak Spanish (including speaking and hearing Spanish in a real-time conversation, etc.)?

[Edit]: Meant to delete this, since I somewhat already answered my own question, but for some reason I can't delete my own post.
