Buying gold / gametime - the end for F2P as we know it?

Granted that people play trials for different reasons, here's my take as someone who enjoyed the convenience of hopping on a toon for a bg or 2 then logging off (also, I haven't paid for WoW in ages because I don't consider it worth the money):

Let's see. Log in for 2 or 3 hours and consider yourself lucky if you get to play 1 bg (I am NOT exaggerating), or play in a more active bracket where you have more options as well as the same advantages as everyone else. Costs being equal the choice is obvious for those with old accounts and nothing else to spend the gold on. There is no indication that queue times will improve and no one seems to be suggesting any reason to expect them to.

Personally, whether or not this happens and I take advantage of it, I'm finding less and less incentive to log in to my 20's. So it's not even an either/or. I hate to admit it as much as those denying it, but the bracket as far as bg's are concerned is already dead. Maybe the sad 29's will stick around to gank non-twink trials, but that's not my play-style at all.

Exactly, and that's what I meant with nail in the coffin (for ME, obviously). If people like skirmishes I guess that will still be possible without much of a headache.

Similiar to EVE online, which has an extremely good subscription model. Methods like these also help to combat RMT gold sellers etc, which WoW definitely needs.

Seems they think about using the wildstar model.

Yes they are referring to eve, a successful mmo unlike wildstar.

How is this model combatting gold sellers?

Players are able to buy in game currency through legitimate and supported channels, ensuring they cannot be scammed in the process. It forces gold sellers to match the value that a player is able to aquire through said legitimate channels, forcing their pricing models and profit margins down and possibly even making it unprofitable to do so at all.

Don't take this the wrong way, but a TI "MVP" rejecting someones opinion based on their join date and trying to compare their history in this bracket and their history on this site is probably not in much of a position to be using such a title

Over the years whenever someone's knowledge of the bracket has not correlated with the age of their TI account, historically they have all been TI account re-rolls, which is against TOS and constitutes a mandatory automatic ban. I suppose it is possible to gain enough knowledge of this bracket without ever having had an account on TI for three whole years, but, the likelihood, borne out by experience, is very slim.

Having said that, even long time TI veterans aren't seriously talking about this idea (just an idea, mind you) being the "death" of F2P. From your perspective, your position is realistic and my position is denying the inevitable. But from my perspective, my position is realistic and your position is reactionary and alarmist. Plus there are ill-willed P2Ps on this forum who would like nothing more than to sow the seeds of doubt in the future viability of F2P because they pathologically hate everyone who is enjoying the game for free while they continue to pay. Thus, because that exists, we have to be extra vigilant about people sweeping in here with no apparent knowledge of the history of the community and declaring it to be halfway in the grave.

Regarding xpac capped accounts: I never understood people that can afford $15 but somehow can't pony up the money for the next xpac (budgets must be real tight). I love twinking, and doing stuff the hard way—don't get me wrong—but it seems like it would be a whole lot easier to have a main to farm stuff with.

That being said, 90s intrigue me.

Don't know If that's a troll bait or not. You might not have known that F2Ps have multiple restrictions and we try to get the most of the game that's limited.

Nope, it's an honest question. Of course F2Ps are restricted. That's why they are so weak compared to players who actually pay for their account. The stupidity I was referring to is the attitude of these players to ignore their short comings and bang their heads against the P2P wall anyway.

You know, the limits of stupidity?

and I thought you might have been referring to the stupidity of paying for an account, then playing in a trial bracket to prove how 'smart' you are.

So in other words, yes it was troll bait. And an insult. Have you even read Shane's new no-tolerance policy?

Part of what made individual achievements worth doing died when everything became account wide. A Cata level 20 with a sea turtle? Something special, because it was BoP and drew attention. Anyone with one now? Not even worth noticing. The same with the Hallow's End title. I remember getting quite a few people noticing me, getting to talk to me, and helping me out, because of both of those things. Now though, it's so commonplace, and requires minimal effort, that it's completely meaningless.

The same with BoAs. They're kind of a pain to grind out for F2P, although DMF made it a lot easier. People say they like doing things the hard way, but sometimes it's just making things needlessly difficult for yourself. How many people are going to refuse to use the BoA tab because it's too easy? Maybe a few masochists, but it would be silly not to use it. The same applies to not having a linked account, which you can still get for $5 if you click on the in-game upgrade link when you log in to a starter account. You can also still make DKs on new accounts without needing a 55 first. Of course some people refuse to do that, for the sake of $5, even if they have spent more than that on TCG items.

How can playing F2Ps be anything but an exercise in stupidity? Have you not seen how much of a difference there is between starter and full accounts? If you feel insulted, well I guess you need to learn to let it go.

No more or less stupid than paying for pixels. It's all a matter of opinion. That said, how can you be so stupid/trollish as to assume that playing F2P is "an exercise in stupidity?" Why are you even posting here? There really isn't that much of a difference between starter and full accounts. It depends on the class, spec and player. I have seen many instances of people on full accounts getting beaten 1v1 or in groups by F2P.

Reading this, and some of your other recent posts, it's clear that you're either trolling, stupid, or, most likely, both.

I agree with Crystal. For me one of the appeals of F2P is how it is like NASCAR: everyone is trying to make the most of a limited set of abilities and gear, so personal skill becomes more important. I can certainly afford to play P2P end-game, and I did for many years, but I like the low-time-investment model better. Not having to grind for new gear all the time to stay competitive is a godsend.

This message caused me to register for this site though I have visited many times. I share this perpective greatly. I have played wow off and on since vanilla. First time seeing someone else express the same perspective. Its nice to have company.

That's very sweet! Welcome into our ranks.
