Brewmaster Monks and Bladed Armor

This is an extension of a topic that came up on the Questions and Answers thread. Once it went past a few posts I thought it would be worth it to break off into its own thread... and also so more people playing BM monks would see it.


My brewmaster monk is not seeing any Bonus Armor from Armor Kits. [MENTION=19864]Grants[/MENTION] has confirmed that prot warriors, prot paladins, and guardian druids are all getting Bonus Armor from armor kits, along with the Attack Power that comes with them. I have confirmed by double-respeccing that BM monks are getting the Bladed Armor passive. Yet if this were a widely known problem for all BM monks at all levels, I would see posts complaining about it online on Blizzard forums or elsewhere, and I don't.

So I'm calling on other people with BM monks to report their own findings. Bonus Armor is a separate stat on the stat sheet. Please check to see whether you are seeing any numbers from your armor kits. I also especially want to hear from any BM monks who have actual +bonus armor gear like Ring of Defense. I'm farming for one now but haven't gotten one yet.

It could be just me, or it could be all BM monks, or it could just be a display issue, I don't know. Please help me solve this mystery.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm wondering if the difference is whether or not a specific character has ever equipped an item with +bonus armor. Since my monk hasn't, it could either be a display issue (the armor kits are actually working and just not showing as working) or it could be some sort of activation issue (armor kits won't contribute to +bonus armor at all, unless you have equipped an item with +bonus armor in the past.)

Could you please confirm something for me? I'd like to check two things. 1) Whether the armor kits are still giving Bonus Armor even when you have no items with +bonus armor equipped, and 2) whether the +AP from Bladed Armor is reflecting in the actual Attack Power mouseover tooltip on the stat sheet. Screenshots would be greatly appreciated if you could manage it.

Thanks for the helpful screenshots. I did a little checking myself, and on two different warriors, the bonus armor is working, whether or not that warrior had ever been prot before and whether or not that warrior had ever equipped a +bonus armor item.

The only thing left that I can think might be the difference between your BM monk and mine is that mine has never equipped a +bonus armor item. I'd hoped I'd disproved that theory with my warrior tests but now I just don't know.

It could simply be that my bm monk is bugged. I wouldn't like to think so, but I don't know what else to chalk it up to.

Well, I figured it out. Sheepishly.

To make a long story short, Medium Armor Kits give +1 Bonus Armor. Light Armor Kits do give +1 armor, but they do not give +1 Bonus Armor.

My monk was still using light armor kits. I couldn't tell that in-game until I checked her on WoW Armory. As soon as I installed a Medium Armor Kit over a light one, I got the bonus armor.

So let this be a positive experiment for those who were wondering: medium armor kits will give bonus armor (and attack power) but light armor kits will not. Even though they scale to the same armor value.

My monk was still using light armor kits.

I was going to suggest this was the problem. I also noticed +1 strength to wrist does nothing as well. Stats have been squished, and some have been squished to less than one, rounded down to zero in real terms, but not on the character sheet.

Probably not. If the cutoff for giving +1 bonus armor is somewhere between +8 armor (light armor kit) and +16 armor (medium armor kit) then Minor Protection's +1 armor is well under the scaling cutoff.
