Skype/Vent/Mumble Ideas?

I can pitch in the last $15 on Friday, Sunday at the latest.

Before everyone starts throwing money down, I'd like to suggest the free download program: Raidcall. You can read about it here. Raidcall acts just like vent; however, permanent servers are free to create and easy to moderate.

I have now spent an hour researching RaidCall and this thing is confusing the hell out of me. Their groups are supposedly using dedicated servers, nothing is hosted client-side but there is no information whatsoever about these server. Someone said that their servers are hosted in China, which would make sense because they seem to be a Chinese company. They are sponsored by Koramgame which also is a Chinese company, they make computer-games.

How are they able to pay for development of the software, for the servers and for all the sponsoring they're doing though? They don't run ads, they don't have any premium payment-models, no microtransactions, nothing. All the servers they would need to keep their service running for free should cost a fortune. And why do we get points that can be used for nothing for staying online? Information about servers is not the only thing that doesn't exist though, there is barely any information about RaidCall except for the basics. It's as if the software came out of nowhere and they have a bunch of money to throw away not expecting any in return.

Something's sketchy. They could have gotten a large sum of money from their sponsor in order to let them gain a big userbase by offering a decent, free service like this one, to then later on start monetizing their service through premiums, ads, and so on. I could also go full on conspiracy theorist though and say that they're giving users points for staying online in order for them to leave their machines running while they're afk so that RaidCall can go use our PCs to host their servers on. Or even worse; they could be using our machines to mine Bitcoin. Things of this sort have transpired before and RaidCall has better motives than most to be doing something like this.

Rambling aside though; there probably is no sketchy business going on and they are simply able to host their servers for cheap in China with the money from their sponsor. If this is the case though, would it be worth for us to be using RaidCall instead of Mumble in order to keep our money? Personally, I'd say no. From the feedback I've gathered RaidCall seems to suffer from lag and other problems quite frequently, both software and network-wise. It does make sense for the network related problems to exist because their Chinese servers are very far away and possibly under very high load due to them being shared by all their users. This also means that our pings would be very high since our packets would have to travel across the world and back before reaching us. Software-wise; as I said before, users have reported several bugs and nothing is very customizable, neither the client itself nor the servers. So there would barely be any settings to let us keep our channels clean and hassle-free. Now with Mumble, none of these problems exist. I've had a lot of experience with different VoIP-clients and Mumble is with no doubt the best one, its only con when compared to RaidCall is the cost required for us to have a server hosted. But a dedicated-server means no lag and a better ping.

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to share what I found out about the program since there barely is any other information about it.

Resurrecting the thread because we still need 15$.

Trapd's generous donation of 15£ has been received, but we are still in need of 15$ before I'd like to put in the rest and rent a Mumble-server for a year.
The server will be open for all of the F2P-community and its supporters, it will be well managed and moderated, and I will rent it and set it all up as soon as we've received the last donation. Come on guys! :)
