Skype/Vent/Mumble Ideas?

Revlo

A Sentient Pyramid
A question was posed in the Questions and Answers thread a few days ago by PLEYA about whether TI users have a VOIP service that they use for communication. I didn't know the answer to this, and maybe we have that already somewhere. If so, please let us know. Anyway, this got me thinking about how a mass TI communication method like this might improve our games greatly, not necessarily for voice communication, but for bringing players together across servers for simul-queueing with each other. Sort of like a Looking For Group method. Recently I've been doing this over Skype messaging, and it works great. However, I wonder if there might be a better option for all of us out there that would tear down the walls of being on different servers even more. We can always get grouped when possible, but the simple simul-queue works great too, at least with a few people (though Horde would have an easier time with it given queue times).

If you're like me, sometimes I have no interest in queueing with people other than those I know, but there are many times where I'd prefer to play with anyone who is interested in playing objectively and improving as a player. That is so much more preferable to getting in a game full of 1k hp people screwing around. So..... what ideas do people have on this? Is it a bad idea? What are positives and negatives of the various ways of setting something like this up? Vent and Mumble cost money iirc, so that might rule those out right there. One option is that we could have a thread where we all share our Skype names for open "friending" with each other. Then when we are actively looking for people to queue with, we could set our status message to something like, "Looking for games, horde or alliance, playing FC, Heals, or whatever." You see someone you want to queue up with, message them, simul-queue and go from there. You wouldn't need to use audio chat, but could go down that road if you wanted to (I know there are varying opinions about this). Not sure of the riskiness of sharing Skype name on the forums here, and there might be a better way that we could pass our names around. Maybe a different IM service as well.

Maybe it's a bad idea. Just thought I'd toss this out there for exploration. Please share any thoughts on this, because if it is something that would work, it could make games a lot more fun. It also may have already been explored and I missed it. Please point that out as well.

I'm glad you're taking this matter up in its own thread. Until now all communication I've seen between players has been through the WoW text-chat, and that is a real pity because being able to vocally communicate with people while playing makes everything so much more enjoyable and takes strategic-PvP to a whole new level.

Your idea of being able to synchronize queues with others is a great one. I've been playing these so called "mixes" in several other games where you get grouped up with a bunch of random people that you don't necessarily know from before, and it's a great thing. It's often difficult to get a group of friends together for premades because the chances of enough people being around are slim, but there are almost always people around for mixes.

If we had a public VoIP-channel we could have rooms designated for these mixes that would allow people from different realms to group up and then play together as more than just random strangers from different realms. A public channel would also be great for so many more things though, like giving arena-teams and premades the ability to easily all start talking to each through voice-communication, not having to rely on the so much less effective written-chat.

If many others also believe in this idea and would like a channel for our community to use we should set up funding for one. I personally have much experience working with Mumble-servers (which is the best VoIP-client) and would gladly set one up!

Cool, cool, let's keep talking. Can someone remind me, can you do basic channel messaging in vent/mumble? In the end, using voice communication is the most effective for games, but there are some (like myself) who can't use a mic/headphones all the time. I like to use a mic when I can, but I also would really like the option to sometimes be able to use the less-effecient text method. Not that we can't have two systems going on, it's not big deal to log in to vent/mumble when it is possible, and have another messaging program up as well. Also, some people are flat out against using VoIP and a messaging component gives them an option to utilize the system as well. An all inclusive option would be great, but might not be possible.

Yes. Mumble has full support for text-based communication. You can do anything from writing to the sub-channel you're in to sending out messages to all the channels, reaching all users, and you can send messages to specific users too of course. Receiving a message will play a sound letting you know that something was said in chat, and you can even enable a text-to-speech option which will read out messages sent in chat.

That's sounds good Pleya. I'm gonna be out the rest of today, but I wonder if others have any other questions/insight. Can people give a quick post to say if they would be interested in using it if it were available? I'm happy to use anything personally.

I prefer Skype for bg talking . Channels are great for talking and coordinating but there probably has to be some sort of moderation due to certain people ( not going to say names but it starts with a w and ends with atergun) generally spamming and being annoying .

You don't know the spam chat.

I'm personally not a big fan of Skype. It's very resource-intensive, both system and network-wise, worse audio-quality and very uncustomizable. Forming voice-comm groups is also a hassle.

Don't worry about annoying people though, you can give the trusted users permissions to mute/kick/ban players from a channel or the server. Keeping a channel clear of annoyances is a breeze if the server is managed well.

Somebody stopped paying for it I think. Stamm
Also yes Skype is a real pain... Seriously.
Mumble is best but Vent is probably easiest, though the Text-To-Speech system in Mumble is far superior.

^ is one public vent

I have about 15 servers saved but I believe the rest aren't public, so I won't share the information here. I do believe it would be a vast improvement to the current system if we had a well-known and well-used vent server - but it takes a lot of people to use it for it to actually be effective.

i'm game for som VoIP. Woulld make for some really fun games in the F2P world.

If we can get some more people showing interest for a server I'll start a fundraiser for one. I can get a high-quality server for not much money and would be willing to pay a part of it myself, but our community would have to pitch in as well.
