Magic the Gathering

Khaos

Dare to be Optimistic
So for those who do not know back in August I opened a Gaming shop with a main focus around MTG, we have alot of other games and supplies but what brings the bacon is single cards and FNM tournaments. I was curious as to how many people around these parts play Magic, if you guys wanted to discuss things like current metas and opinions I wouldnt mind finding another place to discuss things.

I currently play alot of EDH (Commander),I dont play standard/modern as those cards are what brings in the most money in my area and I would rather sell the cards than use them for myself.

But being in the business I know my fair share of good cards and what is currently winning in multiple formats. What does everyone else play?

Currently I have 8 Decks
EDH
Thraximundar
Nekusar, the Mindrazer
Oloro the Ageless Ascetic
Vorosh, the Hunter
Gisela, Blade of Goldnight
Ruric Thar, The Unbowed

Standard
Mono Black Devotion

Currently Building a 5 color EDH Planeswalker Deck "Super Friends" that has a total of 29 walkers

Ya avatar Tribal can be very efficient but in legacy right now it would be kind of slow wouldnt it? I guess since you no longer play its not a big deal and you can just play your decks as kitchen table fun.

My partner that owns the store plays legacy merfolk and it is insane, but he also plays Karona the False God as a commander of a Avatar Tribal deck, makes it alot of fun for himself and causes alot of chaos in a large game.

I personally don't really play Magic, althought I've started recently. A mate of mine picked it up so I bought one of those starter packs for 17 bucks. So I play with those decks, they're pretty crap :p I'm more of a Yu-Gi-Oh player myself, but I do enjoy playing Magic, entirely different play style. Just doubting wether to spend money on better cards or not.

Well if it is for casual play my suggestion is to look on ebay for magic card lots you get alot of single cards for the money, they generally dont have the best cards but for players who are just playing kitchen table for fun they are the best bang for the buck. Otherwise if you want a better deck for the money I would suggest you looking into what they call Event Decks. They come out ready to play and generally well built.

Other than that my biggest suggestion if you want to get into fun magic and if you can find people to play with is Commander/EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander) It is very casual and social format that allows you to build very fun decks. They are 100 card singleton decks where the only colors you are allowed to have is the colors of your chosen Commander. Its pretty interesting and to be honest my favorite format.

And they just recently released Commander Decks that are pretty good right out of the box they go for around 30$ at major retailers and more online

Yeah exactly, it can be a bit slow at times, i have good ramping in it, 4x dark rituals, 4x belbes portal wich in this deck work better then quicksilver amulets, atleast in my opinion.
I also use 4x darksteel ingots, sometimes ill switch things out and replace them with Sol rings.

It also runs 4x badlands, those things are pricey now, basically 200$ for a set of lands.

I also have buried alives, zombified's, and animate deads, so i pull out of the graveyard alot to.

This deck recently just crushed a tough eldrazi deck, so its still capable of defeating strong modern day decks.

The newest card in the deck i beleive is, like journeyers kite or scion of darkness, most the cards are old.

Magics a really really underrated game i think, alot of people should quit that yugio shit and play something that requires actual thought.

Sounds like to me that the deck works more like a reanimate deck with alot of GY shenanigans, Strong choice and ya those tend to be very strong. Ya a playset of any fetchs can run a pretty penny, Currently since owning my shop I have fliped 20 playsets of fetches for really good profit.

I dont discourage people from playing any other game, My game of choice is of course MTG but I enjoy everything, hence why I went into the gaming business. But one thing I have noticed, YGO players trying out magic tend to enjoy Magic alot, and for the most part play magic alot more once they get used to it.

But those players surprisingly are some of the better players and tend to play very competitive decks. Atleast in my area the top FNM players started out playing YGO

The thing I noticed when I started playing MTG compared to YGO is that I feel like you have look out more at what your opponent has on the field. I dislike that you can choose wether to block or not, and that if you attack, your monsters are tapped. I just love that feel when you activate a nasty trap card when someone does a sick combo, totally destroying their momentum in YGO. Also, I dislike that you need lands in order to play things, it really slows the pace of the game down in my opinion. I've had games were I kept drawing lands and couldn't do anything, or the other way around.

I would like to add tho that I'm in no way an advanced MTG player so some things I state might easily be avoidable or even down right stupid. Some things I do like about MTG that it is a lot cheaper than YGO, and I feel like you can get a lot more diversity in the type of decks you make. If I'm correct there are also a lot more different play styles.

I do disagree with you mythical that YGO doesn't require thought. I sometimes sit for a very long time contemplating what I can play best, wether to attack that face-down monster or not, wether the trap/spell cards your opponent has can do something terrible against you. Also YGO opens up for a lot of mind games, already grabbing the corner of a face-down trap card, insinuating that you will activate on summon or attack can really make your opponent doubt.

And Khaos I'll have a look at those deck types and tell my friends about them, might buy it if it looks good :) On a side note, does your shop has a website? I googles your name buy I couldn't find anything. I was wondering what you sell and stuff.

No right now I have dedicated all my effort to selling local only....The shops that have been around before failed badly because they started focusing more online sells than local not keeping the stuff in the area. The trick to this industry is selling stuff for profit and when they are done with it buying it for a fraction of what you sold it for. Selling online will take product out of the area and quickly kill the circulation.

Thats pretty awesome, what kind of deck do you play for legacy? As I said before I dont have much experience in Legacy but Im always interested in MTG.

PS Mythical I cant PM you, your Inbox is full lol

Ehhh I played it a bit, was kinda fun. All the cards I ever used wern't tourny-legal tho... just random old shit I threw together, 1 mana 0/3 defenders giving me 3 life on block isn't legal anymore :D

To this day the biggest part of MTG is kitchen table gaming and in my opinion is the heart of the Game, its why I play EDH, it has the same feel as kitchen table yet can be played against more seriously players who want to play a more social game for once.

Just started doing some Alters to sell in my shop I have done 3 so far and all 3 sold instantly for 4 times the cards price... So if people notice I am not on wow so much its because I found something else to kill time with lol.

Just curious if people are enjoying Born of the Gods? I cant keep the product in my shop this past week and it has been great for business. Anything you dont like?

Why i am the only nerd playing modern :(

Also looking for x4 Bitterblossom since it's unbanned for modern, paying 40 dollars each via paypal if you can send to me contact me via PM.

I cant keep those in stock lol, Such a huge staple in EDH decks I can easily sell them 50-60$ a pop in my area, if I get any extra I will keep you in mind, but as I tell alot of other people I sell local first to keep the product in the area.

I still have my MTG cards...!! I haven't played in over a decade, but I can't bring myself to part with them :p I didn't play too often, only really collected them, like Pokémon cards.. I played Pokémon Trading card game for the gameboy, and I loved that, but I never got into the Magic video games.

My favourite MTG card, purely for the artwork:

I have a few customers who collect just for value/art. I must say that their collections are very impressive (might be getting my hands on one of them soon) since they collect in value all their cards are mint. They are the same guys that collect other things worth something (constantly getting odd stuff ordered for them)

your the first person I have seen state they play that, what do you like that over the other options?

just found this thread.

by the power of /necro i will post in it!

i play paper magic since ice age block. i have created an mtgo acc for modern testing and to play EDH decks that would cost as much as a small house in paper. i play kitchentable EDH and competitive modern tier1 (not this year, i had to take a break after the whole treasure cruise thing, that was by far the biggest drama ive ever seen in any game - online and offline. wow rage is a joke compared to that iykwim ;)

find me on T/O, you can see my paper decks listed on my profile page:
