Ochi's 24 Retribution Paladin Guide

Ochi

Legend
  • Introduction

Retribution is a very under-rated spec with a lot of potential. I would argue ret has some of the best utility available in the 20-24 bracket. In this guide I will be going over the strengths and weaknesses of the spec along with gearing, stat weights and more.

    Contents:

    • Factions/Races
    • The role you play
    • Stat Weights
    • Talents/Professions
    • Gearing/Chanting
    • Macros
    • Class Match Ups

    Horde
    / Alliance

    Horde:

Blood Elf- The blood elf is our strongest choice for the horde races. Blood Elf Racials include: Arcance Affintity, Arcane Resistance, And Arcane Torrent. The reason behind Blood Elf being the strongest race is Arcane Torrent because Ret lacks an interrupt.

Tauren- The tauren has strong kit of racials although it cannot compete with Arcane Torrent. Tauren Racials include: Cultivation, Endurance, Nature Resistance, And War stomp. War stomp is a great skill to use when peeling but the fact that it DRs stuns makes it lesser choice to arcane torrent, Not to mention it has a cast time.

    Alliance:

Human- The strongest of alliance races is human by a land slide. Human racial's include: Diplomacy, Every Man for Himself, Mace Specialization, Human spirit, And Sword Specialization. Every man for himself is what makes the human race so worth while, Allowing you to use a 2nd AGM or Mark of Tyranny. The expertise is not a huge deal since we use a Axe. Human is the only notable race worth using on alliance for Ret.

    Our Role

If tunneling people is your thing, Ret is not the spec for you. Ret is purely a utility spec. When playing Ret you must be mindful of your team, Don't be afraid to stop doing damage and heal everyone back to full. Rets do 2k+ heals for a reason don't waste this privilege. Save your HoJ's for CCing or Peeling never use a HoJ just because your greedy and chasing someone down. When in a mid fight make sure your focusing your teams kill target or calling focus targets, Hitting the 1.2k health hunter in the back doesn't help your team at all. When the game has gotten to the point where you are waiting for stacks rets place is on defense, Lets face it as Ret your judgement sprint is not gonna close the gap between you and a druid. Clear out the other teams offence while offhealing your healers and FC.

    Stat-Weights

    Ret Stat Weights:
    Hit (3%+ Melee, 6%+ Spell) - Strength - Crit - Haste
Nothing is more important than hitting our spells, Do no sacrifice your hit for more Strength!

    (Enchant:

    Talents/Professions

    Talents:
    I use
Long Arm of the Law, I find this one to be the most beneficial to Ret since it has higher up-time than all of the other talents. I have compared Pursuit of Justice with it but I found that I cant even get to the target to Crusader Strike without wasting HoJ.

    Professions:
Professions for ret are all mostly preference, You will find Skinning, Herbalism, Alchemy, and Mining to be the most beneficial. I am currently using Mining/Alchemy, Going to drop Alchemy for Skinning. Engineering is also a good choice, With engineering you are able to use the Parachute Cloak with the PvP Power Enchantment. The bombs are also quite useful.

    Macros

    Divine Shield:
    #showtooltip
    /cast Divine Shield
    /cancelaura Divine Shield

Looking good, very paladin pink. ;)

Just some minor spelling mistakes like Proffesions (-> Professions) a missing comma here and there and some capital letters after a comma. I'd just copy and paste it into a word editor and spell check in the next days, no hurry.

I think this is definitely good enough to be moved to the guide section!

If you ever want to add more, I'd suggest further elaborating on countering specific classes, different situations like BGs, duels or arenas, but do that as you go along. :)

Great guide, 24 Ret is super fun. Its the only hybrid that can still really fill in as a viable healer with 5.3 upping battle fatigue. 100 mana enchant, timely combat drops and a mana pot here or there can give you really solid longevity.

Just a couple things I'd add:

You actually need spell hit cap for HoJ (15 or 6%). Expertise adds to this, so you just need an extra 5 hit outside of BoAs. Boots of the Hero/Caverndeeps or Band of Raptor Teeth all cover this. Need to get a bit more creative if you initially geared for Holy and didn't take those quest rewards.

Boots of the Hero and Silvered Bronze Boots are also decent options. I've had good results using minor speed, too. Personal preference with mounts available but I like having it on melee.

Engineering is a viable profession imo. Bombs can be very useful to interrupt/peel/close gaps and Parachute Cloak with PvP Power is a boost to damage and healing, even with the scaling nerfed.

Even though you don't have much (ok, any) burst, don't underestimate the damage you can do. Line up TVs with your teammates' burst. Censure is undispellable and can tick pretty hard stacked up, especially with a Crusader proc. Keep it running on kill targets and use it to dot rogues.

Anyways, awesome guide, awesome spec. Hope this gets more people playing it!
