I've been toying with this idea for a while now, and I want to see how many people would be interested in taking part.
One of the disadvantages of the lower level twinking brackets is the lack of any sort of arena rating system. But what I am proposing here is that we create our own community-driven "arena ladder" if you will. I've spent some time researching various formulae for rating used in other games/sports so that I could get a good idea of how to use them and this is what I have come up with:
My plan at the moment would be to use a variation of the elo rating system that was originally created for rating chess players but has been adapted for many things including even some team-based sports. I would create a thread here to keep track of ratings and where players could register teams. All teams would start at 1500 rating (this is to save the horrendous calculations required to determine teams' mmr). It would be up to the individual teams to challenge other people to get matches going. When a match had finished, a member from each team would have to send a screenshot to me by pm, or I guess as a reply to the main thread, and I would run the results through the elo formula to determine their change in rating.
Leaving teams would be treated exactly the same as in WoW, the remaining players of the team would be able to keep the team if they so desired and would therefor keep the teams rating - even if another player joined the team.
As you can tell this is still a rough draft, I wanted to see if there'd actually be interest in taking part before I finalized anything.
I'd also like any suggestions that would improve on this sort of rough draft if anyone has any. Specifically:
Should rating be kept to rating teams, or should I find a system that could rate individual players? (bear in mind this would potentially be a lot less accurate a system)
Should teams have a sort of rating decay if they are missing members, or even if they have just been inactive for a long period of time?
Should the ratings of disbanded teams (maybe only if they achieved high ratings) be kept on record, perhaps separately from the active teams?
While this is primarily for EU, it would be easily possible for me to keep track of a ladder for US servers as well. I will also be making the formula used public so a US player could keep track of a ladder for US if that would be preferred.
Thank you for reading
