As a fresh 80 (warlock), how should I start gearing up for Herald? Is it vital to have full 226 (232 weps are allowed, right?) iLevel gear, or what should I use as a stepping stone / end-point (if, at this point, I plan on doing it only once)? Thanks!

not vital to have full 226 items and 232 weapons, really if you can run the icc 5 man normals for armor since they will be 219 and heroics for weapons which will be 232. even the toc 5 man has ilvl 200 items. on my server there is always runs doing ulduar 25 and the weapons in 25 is 232 and armor is 226 try to get into one of those runs. keep in mind the hardmode items will be 239 and you can use them for herald.

really if you can spend a week or 2 running thru the icc 5 mans and or getting into ulduar 25 you should be in pretty good shape. considering we can use cata flasks and food and even some profession enhancts fight really isnt as hard as it use to be

A week or two? Lulz, it took me 2 days per character to gear for herald of the titans in cataclysm. You basically just need an item in the slot, I've had people do it with heirlooms (weapons even).

think i did halion 10 at 80 with mostly heirloom and t6 shortly after i was hacked, needless to say guild carried me on our first kill lol. but back to the gearing sure day or 2 is easy if you have a friend who can run you thru the 5 mans since most should be able to solo.
