Nihilism and Relationships

Do you believe in "The One"? Some people think that there is one person out there who is the perfect match for them, but personally I think that's bullshit, and is an imagined idea to make them feel better with settling with someone for the rest of their life (or until they divorce). I don't even believe in "love" between lovers. What I mean is that I think the closest you can get to real love is platonic affection for someone, like for siblings and parents. What most people call "love" is really what I just mentioned plus sexuality. Sexual tension + real affection for someone is what gets you "drunk" on love. I think living with a sexual partner for life is unnatural for any animal. People point to the fact that many mammals raise their children, but the fact of the matter is that this behavior is only to ensure the survival of the parents' offspring, not to emotionally please the partner.
If you disagree with me, just take a look at the divorce rates in western nations, they're fucking pathetic. People don't know why they marry the people they marry, and end up being miserable because they don't have the temperament for domesticity.

What do you think about the nature of relationships? (I'm talking about an actual relationship with a spouse, not a sex partner or anything casual)

50% percent of first marriages, 67% of second and 74% of third marriages end in divorce, according to Jennifer Baker of the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, Missouri.

Well, I think similarly, which is why I've been dating my best friend for the past year.

Though I do happen to enjoy the chemical reactions she sets off in my brain ("love"), so I have no reason to complain yet.

Although, to be quite fair, if you're actually using AMERICA as the basis of an intelligent discussion, you won't get very far.

"the one" is definitely bullshit.
Everything else, eh

Yeah it depends on the culture of where you're looking at to an extent, but Canada's rate is the about the same as the U.S.'s if you want a country that is less stigmatized, lol. But in general, the more western and "developed" the country gets, the higher the divorce rate gets.

Well with the high divorce rate occurring ( it will probably get higher) i can certainly see how it would be difficult to think of "the one".

A lot of people these days want to be in relationships because they are afraid of being alone or they think they need to have a partner to be happy. I'm at a college university, i see it all the time, & i definitely saw it too much at my old high school.

Some relationships can work and some can't. I'm not afraid of being alone and if i find someone that fits me then cool, if not, oh well i guess. People in our society rush things too much, they want everything to happen so fast and that is probably one of a few good reasons why the divorce rate is so high.
