Rogue main hand ambush

People say that ambush with dagger does more damage than mace or sword
and Ambush - Spell - World of Warcraft
it saids it here too but not on the in-game description of ambush..

I did not test this out for too long but
I saw about 0-30 ambush damage difference between dagger and sword. (which isnt too much since the next white hit will make the damage up)

I know that daggers have faster hit speed meaning more poison but i am not curious about that
I am curious if sword does about the same damage as daggers with ambush?

The damage scales with zerker buffs so more often than not you'd be better off with a dagger. The real problem with having a sword MH is you can't backstab. You DO end up doing more burst damage with daggers which is the main reason you can even kill people at this level. If you go combat you lose 30% agility, 10% hard damage, 50% damage increase on backstab and 55% more damage on ambush. It's just not worth using any other weapon type MH. It's also not worth going combat unless you stack haste to gain 14 energy per second over subtleties 10 per second. Also, getting over 12% haste for 14 energy isn't possible, the most you can get is roughly 13.8 and i don't think the game rounds up, but it does count the .8 energy regen over an extended period so it's as good as.

What i'm trying to currently figure out is the overall proc rate on battleworn thrash blade. It might honestly be the best OH for rogues at the moment and it might be what helps make combat spec stand on par with sub. The extra MH white procs from thrash blade and the 6% + resil reduced damage might be better for general battleground fighting. You would have to burn sprint on cooldown and play smart to keep the same mobility as sub though.

For combat to shine, you really need a BiS hit rating set but then you lose out on the haste gear. You get punished as combat for not having 100% uptime and capping energy whereas Subtletly it doesn't matter if you cap or not because if you restealth after your initial burst you're automatically doing more DPS than combat.

Here's a rough estimate

Ambush with Wicked Dagger: 110.9
Ambush with Venerable Dal'Rend: 98.06

not that it's going to be concrete every time...

t/dr version: the difference is insignificant.

My DPS Testing:
All damage was done against a lvl 60 training dummy in Stormwind. Keep in mind that I didn’t include poisons (Im usually running double cripp anyways) but did make sure to include the same number of crits and non-crits in my averages.

Daggers:
Backstab – 57.6 average hit
Ambush – 115.8 average hit
5 pt Eviscerate – 111.5 average hit

Swords:
Sinister Strike – 24.9 average hit
Ambush – 111.5 average hit
5 pt Eviscerate – 110.6 average hit

In a normal rotation you would:
Sword – ambush + 3 sinister strikes + eviscerate = 296.8 average damage / 130 energy = 1.29 damage/energy
Dagger – Ambush + 3 backstabs + eviscerate = 400.1 average damage / 275 energy = 1.45 damage/energy

1.45/1.29 = 1.124, meaning daggers do 12.4% more damage than swords, a definite gain. Daggers also offer more consistent damage than swords and give a quicker poison apply rate. Also, when doing this test, I wasn’t using the +10% backstab talent, which would increase dagger damage even more! Finally, backstab only goes off if you successfully were behind your opponent while sinister strike doesn’t. This means backstab cannot be dodged or parried but sinister strike can – ‘this be important’.

The dummy was lvl "60", so they're supposed to be low
Oh my god, you tested it on a level 60 dummy and you expect your numbers to be anything but completely inaccurate?

I had a good laugh, thanks.

The numbers will definitely be inaccurate, but they ought to be proportional to one another and to their lv 20 values. It's a perfectly valid means of comparison.

Without knowing the N, we can't know the confidence of those numbers, however.
