I tried to fish for a hat on a 19 twink years ago but got fed up. Given the evidence that the drop rate has gone up, I am going to give it a try on my FTP. I have a couple of questions that I couldn't find answers to in here.



Can anyone point me towards an up to date guide on where lowbies without an escort can fish? Has this changed in Cata? Is the ZG rewards island in the far NW still a good spot, or are there mobs there now?



Also, I know fishing has changed now, so you can fish in high level waters without high level skill--but does having 225 fishing skill make a difference in how likely you are to fish up a rare as opposed to junk?

That island is still a viable fishing spot and is mob free.



And the way the skill works now is in order to pool fish successfully you must only have 1 fishing skill so you don't have to waste your time leveling it up to get the hat

Idk how it affects your chances exactly but my Priest fished it up at 27 fishing skill. Of course it then took my druid forever to get but that's how luck rolls.

Skill plays no part in drop chance. Just ride along the coast. You can fish pretty much the entire way without being attacked, although some places are quieter than others. I just won the comp, and spent the next 1.5hrs trying for the +5 line, and still didn't get it. Rares are still rare, but you'll get it eventually if you keep trying. Just don't expect to do it on your first try.
