Study abroad is absolutely the best thing I can recommend while you're in school. I went to Spain for 10 months, and even though it was tough going some of the time, it was so worth it. Top five reasons to study abroad while in high school and college (in no particular order):

1) Learn a new language. Besides impressing yourself with surviving the ramp-up phase (average time, 3 months), you get to meet a lot more people, and make more money in the long run.

2) Learn a new culture. You have no idea what you take for granted until you go to a country that works with different assumptions.

3) Much easier to do before graduating. Once you're out of school, financial obligations keep the vast majority of people from ever having the chance to study abroad. It's now or never.

4) Impresses potential colleges and employers. Studying abroad takes guts and initiative. But because you're still in school, you get room to mess up. Making it through a study abroad program helps you stand out.

5) A lot of people love accents. Once you get the language, they love listening to you speak it.

Bonus:

6) Hate your school or home? Study abroad gets you away for a bit.

7) Like to eat? You'll find some awesome foods that don't exist in your home country.

Everyone should study abroad at least once, for a minimum of three months, with as little exposure as possible to their first language. It's like twinking -- there's a grind to get in and gear up, but once you're past that, it's awesome.

would go for 12 weeks. but fuck a 2nd language county b/c i dont speak it fluently, thats why i pick an english language country

if youre adventurous or speak a 2nd language then go there, if not you may become confused easily

That's exactly why you should go to a 2nd language country. You will get confused. And you will figure it out.

I haven't, but many of my good college friends did.

France - My friends seemed to have fun, but said that there were a couple times where the French were extremely rude to them, sheerly for being Americans. My buddy actually got spit on by some French guy because he was wearing the famous John Belushi navy shirt that just says "College" on the front. Needless to say, my friend whooped the guys ass in front of like 200 people.

Ireland - Heard nothing but amazing things from people that studied here. All the Guinness you can drink!

Australia - Obviously far from home, but a beautiful country and the people there seem to love America for whatever reason, haha.

I would encourage you to do it, so many people have told me it's one of the best decisions they've made in their life so far. Good luck either way!

screw that, not gonna spend 15k to be confused. any foreign people you deal with later in life i.e business will speak english. im not gonna pander to the inferior languages

Thanks for the replies.

Financially I can do it whether through scollarships or working more hours valeting and stockpiling cash.

Anyone ever work overseas while doing a semester abroad?

I've got the balls to deal with a new enviroment with a different culture and language.

Just don't know where I want to settle those balls for the summer.

Probably France since any French i learn will become useful for america girls back home, or Aus or NZ since I have friends down there.

ill be having an internship regardless of where i go for my program. in london you cant work more than 50% of the time on a student visa so ill be working and taking classes

france just seems so off putting. all the stories about french douche bags and their misplaced hate for america/americans. plus what american girl gives a flying fuck about being spoken to in french lol

best part will be at the end of the program, olympics will be goin on and ill be able to get train passes and go all over europe and see every country and culture anyways. and get drugs in amsterdam.

It's hard to make a wrong choice for a study abroad program. I know a lady who went to Thailand for her first trip (also 10 months), and she eventually ended up moving to the Pacific Rim later in life to work. If I were to do a study abroad trip now, I'd have a hard time choosing between Hong Kong, Brazil, Costa Rica, Germany, Sri Lanka, and several other destinations.

For working overseas, speaking the same language does carry a significant advantage in the service industry -- employers know that customers love accents as long as their speech remains intelligible. A friend of mine from Manhattan picked up a waitressing job in Australia in a snap while she was over there.

cool.

I havnt had the chance to study abroad myself, coz im just a poor boy (nobody loves me lolol). If you can afford it i would just do it. I promise, that you will have a fucking BLAST! The parties in europe is so insane, its really easy to get huge amounts of alcohol pretty damn cheap, and you only have to be 16 to buy it
<
you can basicly do everything you couldnt do back home in the states without anybody taking notice...coz whatever wierd shit you do here, it will probably just seem pretty average by european standards ..lol. Anyway take the chance while you have it
