Fire Mage?

Why is fire so overlooked? I think it has the potential to be a fantastic support class and have amazing damage. Not to mention it relies on spell criticals which do SO much damage. With the right gear, and much more emphasis on skill, I think the fire mage could be the best F2P spec. Of course, only experienced mages would be able to master it.

any class can be played well if its well played. ...but i think in the grand scheme of things, mages just don't stand up against pallys and hunters.

...and sucks to be you if they see you coming and are prepared for it....31 fire resist really isn't very hard to get for 2h mace classes (another 1000 honor and i'll finally have the lava dredger).. even if you have the +10 spell pen trinket, its still knocks 30% off your damage output. (if you don't equip the spell pen and your opponent has the full 31 fire resist...it mitigates a whopping 38% of your damage).

without the lava dredger, its still about an 11% reduction...assuming they have the gear kit setup and see you coming.

(not that anyone bothers with the gear, but if fire mages/locks were to become an issue, people would be getting fire resist gear).

edit: alliance 2h mace wielders can actually get up to 49 fire resist with the bandana (that's 44% mitigation w/your 10 spell pen...50% without).

Well that depends on what you need it for. Mages are super anti healers, nothing kills my priest like being unable to heal because of all the Counterspell. On the flipside hunters aren't something I generally have to worry about because they don't keep me from casting.

..mainly referring to his 'best f2p spec' comment. I think he's asking about fire mages specifically...i believe frost mages have counterspell too. i've seen some bad-arse frostmages...never seen a noteworthy fire mage....in my very limited experience that is.

so basically i'm guessing you don't see fire mages because they don't get the extra CC... but get a bit more damage. i'd bet most mages chose the CC over the damage.

i think there's a big ol' thread right by this one that addresses all this.

Thanks for the input. I am gonna experiment with fire tree what can be done with it, and I'm hoping for good results

I can't really say anything about specific mage specs until I check them out down here again (it's been a while), I just disagree with that blanket statement that good mages are not as good as hunters

or pallies, since you decided to add those.

Mages:

  • Pyroblast’s initial damage has been increased by approximately 26%, and its damage over time has been increased by approximately 100%.

  • Fireball damage has been increased by approximately 17%.

Just hang in there a little bit longer...

you dont really gain anything as a mage for speccing fire, impact is nice when it procs (which isnt often plus its unreliable), not losing casting time is ok but the problem isnt so much casting time but rather death in a few sec if a hunter decides to target you

Hmmm. Fire mage with haste trinks, haste belt and cape with haste buff from pilgrim table? Wonder what that'd be like.
