I see no evidence of the world ending any time soon. I'm sure people throughout the ages have seen humanity "at its worst", and you can even find it in records.
Remember in the early 90s (or listen if you don't remember that time because you weren't born yet) when there was a big scare about green house effect? A decade later saw scientists turning around saying, "Oh, we just don't have enough weather on record. Seems the holes over the ice caps regularly open and close."
When people bring up this 2012 scare, all I can think of is that crappy movie. Writers are not the people that are going to survive natural disaster after natural disaster. Writers, almost always, like most other creatives are exceptionally accident prone or suffer from bouts of depression, neither of which line you up for success in survival.
Just quit reading the book of Revelations and you should feel better.

the world has never been at peace. even w/o humans there will always be predators and prey fighting for survival...or do you not see that as war
even if you only count humans though there has never been any real semblance of peace
