Mage vs Warlock

Volsci

Legend
So, I've decided to come back to the game after a week of lurking about private servers.

I'm focusing on 19's simply because the skillcap is lower then required at higher brackets, so I don't have to devote as much time to mechanics practice. (Not intended to start flaming, forgive me). I've played rogues since early classic and for lengthy periods at each bracket - I'm looking for something new, meaning, not melee.

The two classes that I am interested in would be either a mage or a warlock.

Would experienced individuals of either class give input on the gameplay, and overall class viability assuming a high level of play, please? Just include your basic thoughts on the class, notes here and there, and survivability.

Before I quit I went ~15 games without seeing a warlock, and averaged five or six without seeing a mage. So, namely @ warlocks, do I see so few simply because they get facerolled? I don't really care about high scores, I'm just after a good time, something to do after homework.

I'll be running with focus \ mouseover, and (though I don't know if they exist) nearestenemy macros, as well as being able to do most of the remaining jumps & studying vurtne or drakedog for tips. Jajaja. Long story short; am I going to be pissed off because, despite pulling out all the stops, my class will still lose to that keyboard turning rogue who is obviously clicking ambush eviscerate? Or the back peddling hunter? Or are the classes sturdy enough to function well once experience is acquired?

Thanks for the opinions,

-Volsci \ Kohes

While the bracket could use some more warlocks, they really don't sound like your style =/ If I were you I'd roll an arc mage (they can sometimes out-DPS // burst a hunter) - but be careful not to midfarm! It's easy to get carried away on one of these badboys
<

Arc mage - DPS - most mobility due to the arcane barrage being no cast time

Frost mage - CC / FC support - Obviously most CC for the pet stun / frostbolt spam

Fire mage - GY farming (pyroblast) - Really shouldn't roll a fire mage, they are very stationary and can only really be good if standing back in a crowd when no one is targeting you (which practically never happens)

I have been interested in making a warlock for a *long* time, but just never really got around to it.

Part of this is a desire to be at least somewhat unique - which also is why I don't want another rogue.

If you are rooting the "I don't want to devote a lot of time to the class" towards the warlock not sounding like the toon for me; note that I mean that I would prefer to keep play minimal so I can keep irl in check, as well.

I suppose I will add the following criteria, opinions again would be wonderful.

-Which class has the higher skillcap?

-In your opinion, which would be more satisfying?

-If you could choose either or to play, with perfect gear and at the highest level of play, which would it be?

And, finally, (If you can tell, I am leaning towards warlock)

-If I am willing to research \ study into learning the class, combined with a relatively adept understanding of the game, is warlock a class that I could simply "make" work? For purpose of support & FC \ FC assistance. The possibility of 1vX would also be lovely, that is one reason I am looking at a frost mage. Do 19 warlocks have the utility to 1vX?

imo Warlocks are very easy to "make" work. I would never personally try to FC on a lock but assisting a FC is smiled upon. 1V2-3 is possible if you time your fears and soul shards/lifebloods correctly, any more than that I would say that you're too squishy to handle it. One of your main concerns should be which of the two specs you want to concentrate on because they both have different playstyles...don't even bother with Demonology (not worth a crap at 19.) Go Affliction if you want to tab dots on people or Destruction if you like timely burst dmg. Always have imp out!

Volsci, warlock damage scales pretty poorly at 19. Sure you can top the charts, but your single target damage is pitiful.

Also, our only cc (fear) breaks from retardedly little damage. A single imp bolt, or 1-2 dot ticks, will do the trick.

The class can work, but mages have more mobility, more burst damage, and more forms of cc.

Oh, and good hunters will poop on you if there is no los.

I too enjoy being unique, but mage has so much more potential.

Coming from a priest PoV mages are much more difficult to deal with - CS, poly, novas, and plenty of damage - where Locks are only annoying if they stand in the back and no one is on them and they just chain fear. Locks are super squishy and I believe it would get old fast to die so often as a Lock - only way I think it would work is if you hug walls and LoS people

obviously, warlock has the higher skillcap. that being said, Warlocks have a unique ability to multi-dot everything and keep pressure up on the enemy healers. i play a mage myself (lolsigdidntshowthat), and i enjoy it very much, basically, if you're looking for a premade spot, you're way more likely to get one with a mage. if you're looking for the most fun, you can get that from a warlock i believe.

^ this pretty much i have both classes and mage is so much easier

With that being said lock is probably one of the most fun classes ive played at 19 but with the state of the bracket hunters are retardedly op and getting buff next patch ive sort of retired my lock
