Healer's guide to mouseover macros

Mouseover Healing

This is a simple guide on how to make a mouseover macro. This is specifically for healing, although mouseover macros are useful for DPS as well. If you currently use a click casting UI, this will replace the need for it.

What it Is

Mouseover Healing allows you to; Place your mouse curser over a player or their player frame, hit a button...and they are healed.

Here are some sample macros:

#showtooltip

/cast [@mouseover,exists] Power Word: Shield;Power Word: Shield

#showtooltip

/cast [@mouseover,exists] Renew;Renew

What It Does

When you press the keybinding it will use the following priority:

First - it will heal the target you have the mouse curser over. (player or frame)

Second - it will heal your target.

Third - It will heal you. (if you do not have a mouseover or hard target)

Key Binding Options

You can use bindings on your keyboard or mouse. An easy binding to start out with is the scroll wheel on your mouse. This is easily set up in the keybinding menu in Warcraft.

Why Do it?

1. You no longer have to target a player to heal then. This allows you to keep an enemy player targeted so that you do not lose any time if you need to CC, interrupt or burst.

2. If you currently use a click casting UI, like Healbot, you no longer have to worry about a broken addon rendering you useless. You have the luxury of using the stock or any UI that strikes your fancy.

3. If you do not have anyone targeted, the first person/pet who attacks you will become your target. This enables you to quickly react if you need to immediately CC or create distance.

Setting It Up

Set up your key binding in the WoW interface

Go into the Macro Menu

Name the Macro and select an icon for it

Paste or type the macro into the comments box

*tip ctrl+V is the command to paste into WoW

Drag and Drop your new icon onto your action bar. (place in the action bar slot you designated for your keybind)

Here is a short video to show you how it is done: (TURN up the volume, the audio came out a touch low)

Start with one new keybinding at time until it is muscle memory. Once you get used to it, you will never go back to target healing again.

Happy Healing!

Hey Phe, nice mouseover guide

.

Mouseover is really important for healers for all the reasons you listed, and also because whoever is targeting you will have no idea who you are healing, which is a small but sometimes important advantage.

Another thing I like to use is /focus [@mouseover] which is a good way to quickly set a focus target. For instance, if you are in the middle of healing and notice a night elf priest pop out of stealth and begin healing your enemies, you can quickly focus him with this macro without losing your current target and immediately use a /cast [@focus] Holy Word: Chastise macro (which everyone already has, right?

This is exactly the kind of get-you-off-the-ground kind of guide that players need. Simple, to the point, both tells and shows how to do things. Elegant both in its simplicity and conciseness. Total win.

Please make 20 more like it covering a range of topics.

(no good deed goes unpunished, eh?)

Thank you.

Mouseover macros are a healer's best friend. They make healing so much easier and more efficient. This is a simple yet useful guide.

I've never tried mouse-over macros but it would be silly not to. I'll have to try it. Tell me this though: have you ever accidentally bubbled someone with your cursor over them while trying to bubble your target? That'd be my first fear. Or clicking off a target to Flash Heal yourself but someone walks across the cursor to steal it? Just wondering.

Thanks, Phe

I do not have that issue now, though I am sure I did some messy healing while I was getting used to it. Out of habit I go for the heal by mousing over the player frame.

Something I have done is to run around SW/Org in a crowded area healing others and myself to get used to it.

*Hope to see a Priest of yours in WSG again.

They just disabled experience off for F2P, lol, so I won't be trolling WSG for a while. I'll be in game as Kuromajyo, after I get my old account back, level my 80 main, get it and the 19 geared and blah, blah... So, it'll be a while
<
Then I have to upgrade the F2P account with Shiro on it and transfer it to my old account... Or make a new Priest (T_T) So ya, no Shiromajyo for a while. But my main is a Belf Priest too so I'll just start out using mouse-overs and by the time I'm back to the 19's it'll be old news
<
Thanks!

^^ thanks for the waves today in wsg phe

if someone can get mvp for fleshing out a chardev page in text you should get one for this!
