Need Help With Patenting an Idea

Does anyone have any advice? I've drawn out the basic design for it (excluding dimensioning and material detail) and I've done a little personal research on the idea and haven't found anything like it so far online. It's a mechanical product used for everyday living (not an electronic).

I'm curious as to what steps I should take first in getting this idea out the door. Hire an attorney to research the patent? Currently in college and have little money. I have a family that would be more than willing to help if need be. Is crowdfunding a good idea after the patent? Or should I try to find a company to pitch it to?

what country do you live in? basic legal consultation is usually free or at least fairly affordable

People who are interrested will give you money if it is worth it.

Once enough people are interrested, you can spend the money to make a proto type.
