If you've played through the WoD questlines to unlock the garrison upgrades, you can invest in them. https://www.wowhead.com/item=38426/eternium-thread is a common gold sink too, as it's for sale from the mammoth & you can toss it into your mats storage.

All the various profession mats added in SL are better towards this end, since they cost 3x as much and consequently let you fill 3x the value into the same bag slot.
Agreed that garrison upgrades are also nice, especially the mine and fishing pond. Not that they're going to radically change anything, but it's nice to know that you've improved your little corner of the world.

Love those, & every one of my toons has a least one stack of em'.
Unfortunately they only stack to 20, so maybe not a great 1k cap G-sink.
