Veteran account

The Architect.
The question is simple: How does a veteran account work? Is it an upgraded account with a level 20 character that is still playable even after your subscription runs out or... ?

You buy the battle chest, that's what makes you a vet. It comes with a month, after that you can play 20 sub off. Any characters you've played since 7.3.5 hit though are banking your xp and once you buy the battle chest and log that character that banked xp is instantly applied. So bye bye 20. You'd have to roll again or hopefully you haven't played them much since mid Januraryish.

If you were to buy a month 6 months from now you'd be fine, it only banks xp from a pure f2p account going to a paid account.

Also if you want to play your 20s sub on you'll have to stop xp. Make sure you turn it back on before your sub expires or you won't be able top join a battleground Q.

You are correct @Mialo - it is an upgraded account. Basically, if you have an account that has been sub'd up at any time, then the sub expires, you will be classed a Vet. Any lvl 20 or lower toon on that account can be used even without the sub. You will have similar restrictions as F2P accounts, only you do get a few extra perks, such as :-
  1. if you unlocked your Void Storage while sub'd up, you will still have access to it once Vet (unsub'd)
  2. you can get bigger bags while sub'd up
  3. you can stockpile items not usually available to F2P's and use them while unsub'd
  4. you can get better chants on your weapons and armor, but they must be applied while sub'd. Once your sub lapses, you can only apply low level chants which are usually available to F2P's
  5. you can purchase expensive or higher level mounts while sub'd on higher level toons which you can use later on your Vet's
A few things you need to be mindful of though :-
  1. what @Hashbrowns noted - if you try to go Vet on an account which is currently pure F2P, you could lose your level 20's. Maybe best to keep as F2P and start a new account if that's the case
  2. before your sub expires, you will need to unlock your XP on your proposed 20's, otherwise if your sub expires while XP is locked it'll bug out and you can't queue bg's
  3. your professions once unsub'd will be bugged also, such that you can only craft items up to about profession lvl 60 or so. Though, if you have say First Aid at 225, it'll let you use higher level bandages, but once they run out you'll only be able to craft very basic ones
  4. Archaeology is bugged when unsub'd - you can't do it
Apart from a few inherit differences, Vet's are basically F2P's with a few extra perks, and also a few downsides, but I'd say the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Hope that gives a brief insight to Vet's.;)

You can lock your exp before you upgrade and then when your sub expires have a GM unlock it and you are fine.

Thanks for all your thorough answers. One more question: are we able to keep playing Monks and non-classic races?

You can play Worgen, Goblin etc but you cannot use the Allied Races unless of course u have unlocked them. Also yes, you can play Monk.
If you haven’t purchased Legion then you won’t have access to the new Dalaran and Legion zones, but I’m guessing it will be later this year they add it to the Battlechest and then we can access it. Usually happens just before the next X-PAC goes live.
