19 Quick Start Gearing Guide [WoD]

Grandfathered
Looking for the legion quickstart gear guide?

NOTE: THIS GUIDE WAS LAST UPDATED FOR WARLORDS OF DRAENOR. ANYTHING AFTER THE LEGION PREPATCH SHOULD USE THE LEGION QUICKSTART GEARING GUIDE. I'M PRESERVING THIS GUIDE FOR POSTERITY AND PRIVATE SERVER USE. IT MAY ALSO BE SOMEWHAT USEFUL FOR FINDING WPvP ENCHANTS AND ITEMS.

This is my quick start guide for gearing each class/spec, with a focus on starting quickly and (somewhat) cheaply for new characters. This guide will not include grandfathered gear, and will include alternatives to the difficult to get pieces of gear, so that you can get started with 19 pvp quickly. Difficult gear includes faction change gear, the [Lucky Fishing Hat], grandfathered gear, and extremely rare BoE items. If you want to find grandfathered BiS gear, check out the 19s armory list for some ideas.

There are plenty of guides out there that are good reads on how to pvp, how to play a certain class, how to scroll-click return, and a host of other useful information. This guide will only focus on a starting set of gear (and how to upgrade it to BiS) available to new twinks. This guide is also going to combine Tollo's Class Tier List and Pattern's Item Scaling Chart. All credit for their guides goes to them - we're just combining them into this guide to save space.

Some things to note:
  • Gear will usually scale up to ilvl 24 for 19 battlegrounds and arenas. While some of the items may not look that great when you first get them, they may scale and end up being better than you think. Part of determining the best gear is figuring out which items scale to what stats. See the Item Scaling Chart post for more information.
  • Enchants are also scaled down to 19, which means how well an enchant scales can make a major difference in gearing a character.
  • Most of the time, 19 twinks are going to want [Glove Reinforcements] on their gloves. It requires level 60 to apply, and cannot be applied through the trade window, which means that BoE gloves are in high demand for most twinks, as they will need to have glove reinforcements applied before equipping them. DO NOT EQUIP YOUR BOE GLOVES BEFORE THEY ARE REINFORCED.
  • The belt slot is almost always going to be a belt from random dungeon reward satchels. These belts don’t scale, but tend to give the best distribution of stats.
  • The ilvl 32 Argas rings from "Never Again!" are almost always used as one of the ring slots - and since the quest is doable as both alliance and horde, the BiS option is often to faction transfer to obtain a copy of the second ring! This guide will mention the double ring, but will also provide at least one more ring that is obtainable without going through a faction transfer.
  • Glorious stats have a bugged tooltip. Peerless stats is the chest enchant to use.
  • Minor speed is the only boot enchant with speed that stats with the cloak enchant.
  • The BoA shipyard rings (broken link to shipyard guide here) are very good items (often BiS), but are difficult to reliably get and won't be included here. Feel free to ask how they fit into your spec/class's ring options!

**This is generally for use by newcomers looking for information on class viability in the bracket.

There will always be some bias when it comes to class power. I will do my best to maintain as objective a viewpoint as possible.
I will tend to take someone's opinion on a class more seriously if they don't main it. Feel free to leave suggestions for edits/updates in the thread.

Thanks to everyone who looked over this list for me.
- Tollo

If you see any typos or broken links, please let me know. More importantly - if you disagree with certain gear choices or think I missed something, please post that as well, along with the reasoning behind that gear piece! If you play a class/spec combination that I don't have listed or filled out, please post with your gear and though process behind it. With the addition of the Class Tier List and Item Scaling Chart, please comment if you have any recommended updates to those as well!

Druid - Balance ★★★★1/2
Balance druids are quite powerful damage dealers with some off-healing capability, and easily turn into solid flag runners when needed. Intellect and Haste are heavily prioritized to maximize damage. Having a second set for flag running is advisable. Note that the two best options for boots and bracers have the same stats and are rewards from two horde quests. Make sure you don’t accidently get two bracers or two boots from these quests.

Druid - Feral ★★★★★
Feral druids are very powerful at level 19, to the point where they are banned from competitive play. If you decide to make a feral druid, know that you will be very powerful in pvp, but may be shunned by the twinking community. I would highly recommend AGAINST making a feral druid for 19 pvp.

GEAR:
Head: [Stained Shadowcraft Cap]
Neck: [Eternal Will of the Martyr]
Shoulders: [Stained Shadowcraft Spaulders]
Back: [Inherited Cape of the Black Baron]

Boots: Minor Speed, +2 Agility
Rings: Gift of Versatility
Weapon: Elemental Force, Landslide

TALENT: Wild Charge

Druid - Guardian ★★
Guardian druids are extremely rare at 19 and are not considered to be very good. Since they take extra damage due to being a tank spec, they aren’t as good flag carriers as resto druids, who have the same speed capabilities with more healing and less incoming damage. Guardian druids can be decent front line bruisers, with strong survivability in bear and and surprising damage output. Useful stats include stamina, agility, crit, and bonus armor. Using the two piece blackened defias is ideal since the 10 armor nets you extra attack power. This section is speculative, and may need updated.

GEAR:
Head: [Stained Shadowcraft Cap], [Lucky Fishing Hat]
Neck: [Eternal Woven Ivy Necklace]
Shoulders: [Stained Shadowcraft Spaulders]
Back: [Inherited Cape of the Black Baron]

Trinkets: [Inherited Insignia], [Defending/Returning Champion], [Arena Grand Master], [Inherited Mark of Tyranny]
Weapon: [Repurposed Lava Dredger]

ENCHANTS:

Back: Gift of Versatility

Gloves: Glove Reinforcements

Boots: Minor Speed
Rings: Gift of Versatility
Weapon: Elemental Force, Landslide

TALENT: Wild Charge, Displacer Beast

Druid - Restoration (Flag Carrier) ★★★★★
Resto druids are the strongest flag carrier in WSG, but are difficult to play. They can traverse the field quickly with travel form and shapeshift to remove slows. Bear form provides a significant boost to health and armor, around 4.5k hp. These druids often have three gear sets. The first set is for providing healing when the teams are fighting in mid, which trades some stamina for int and haste. The second is for flag carrying with a heavier focus on stam. The third set is for when holding flag with stacks, where all int/movespeed are traded for maximum stamina. The set listed below is the first set, with some of the others listed as alternatives.

GEAR:
Head: [Lucky Fishing Hat], [Preened Tribal War Feathers]
Neck: [Eternal Horizon Choker], [Eternal Woven Ivy Necklace]
Shoulders: [Lasting Feralheart Spaulders]
Back: [Tranquillien Champion's Cloak] (H), [Tumultuous Cloak of Stamina], [Ancient Bloodmoon Cloak]
Chest: [Toughened Leather Armor]
Bracers: [Uninsured Bracers] (H), [Acquisition Bracers] (H), [Bracers of the Ancient Grove] (A)
Gloves: [Fine Leather Gloves], [Blackened Defias Gloves]
Belt: [Tarantula Silk Sash], [Belt of the Fang]
Legs: [Preened Wildfeather Leggings]
Boots: [Spidersilk Boots], [Sandals of Sacrifice]
Rings: [Seal of Argas] (x2 T), [Ring of Pardons] (H), [Dread Pirate Ring], [Stillwater's Signet], [Ello's Band] (A)
Trinkets: [Arena Grand Master], [Inherited Insignia], [Defending/Returning Champion], [Inherited Mark of Tyranny]

Hunter - All specs
Beast Master ★★★1/2
Marksman ★★★★
Survivial ★★★★
Hunters are very strong and highly mobile fighters. Prioritizing agility and crit, hunters deal a large amount of damage while being able to kite enemies. Gear choices often trade between stam and agility depending on the group makeup and playstyle. Pets are chosen based on their raid buffs and CC ability, and BM hunters can tame exotic pets. The most difficult part of creating a hunter is that the best scope (Flintlocke’s Woodchucker) requires the player to have a level 80 hunter on the same account. Note that Flintlocke’s Woodchucker is not allowed in competitive arenas, but is allowed in WSG.

GEAR:
Head: [Stained Shadowcraft Cap], [Tarnished Raging Berserker's Helm], [Lucky Fishing Hat]
Neck: [Eternal Will of the Martyr], [WSG Medallion]
Shoulders: [Champion Herod's Shoulder]
Back: [Inherited Cape of the Black Baron], [Glowing Lizardscale Cloak]
Chest: [Gloomshroud Armor], [Champion's Deathdealer Breastplate]
Bracers: [Black Wolf Bracers], [Chitonous Bracers], [Thrall's Gift (Goblin)]
Gloves: [Gloves of the Fang], [Foreman's Gloves]
Belt: [Vigorous Belt of the Bandit]
Legs: [Tarnished Leggings of Destruction]
Boots: [Feet of the Lynx], [Silver Embossed Boots], [Cobrahn's Boots], [Footpads of the Fang]

Mage - Arcane ★★★1/2
Mages bring quite a bit of versatility to 19s, with quite a bit of CC in addition to some damage. Arcane mages focus more on the damage side, but still have polymorph and frost nova for CC. With blink and possibly blazing speed, they are quite mobile as well. Arcane explosion is great for finding stealthed classes, and an arcane mage on defense can help protect against rogue ambush returns. Int, spellpower, and haste are prioritized.

GEAR:
Head: [Tattered Dreadmist Mask]
Neck: [Eternal Horizon Choker]
Shoulders: [Exquisite Sunderseer Mantle]
Back: [Ancient Bloodmoon Cloak]
Chest: [Tattered Dreadmist Robe]
Bracers: [Hovel Digger Bands] (A), [Mindthrust Bracers], [Cuffs of Black Elements]
Gloves: [Magefist Gloves], [Serpent Gloves], [Gold-flecked Gloves]
Belt: [Enumerated Wrap of the Vision]
Legs: [Tattered Dreadmist Leggings]
Boots: [Spidersilk Boots], [Merger Boots] (H), [Conspirator's Slippers] (H)
Rings: [Seal of Argas] (x2 T), [Ring of Pardons], [Dread Pirate Ring], [Stillwater's Signet] (H), [Lavishly Jeweled Ring]
Trinkets: [Inherited Insignia], [Defending/Returning Champion], [Touch of the Void], [Arena Grand Master], [Inherited Mark of Tyranny], [Discerning Eye of the Beast], [Swift Hand of Justice]
Weapon: [Grand Staff of Jordan]

ENCHANTS:

Neck: Gift of Haste

Boots: Minor Speed
Rings: Gift of Haste
Weapon: Elemental Force

TALENT: Evanesce, Blazing Speed

Mage - Fire
Fire mages are currently in a really bad position at 19. I've never seen one, so I'm not sure what their stat priority is, but I imagine the gear will be similar to frost or arcane mages. If you play a fire mage, feel free to let me know what the stat priority is and what gear you prefer and I'll add a gear section.

Mage - Frost ★★★1/2
Mages bring quite a bit of versatility to 19s, with quite a bit of CC in addition to some damage. Frost mages focus more on the CC side of things. Frost mages also get a pet Water Elemental. They are quite useful in arenas. Stat priority is int, spellpower, and haste.

GEAR:

Head: [Tattered Dreadmist Mask]
Neck: [Eternal Horizon Choker]
Shoulders: [Exquisite Sunderseer Mantle]
Back: [Ancient Bloodmoon Cloak]

Monk - Brewmaster ★★★★1/2
BM Monks are tanky bruiser with high damage output and high mobility. Often seen on the front line, they are able to take down opponents and flag run reasonably well. BM Monks prioritize a mix of agility, stam, bonus armor, and crit. Many monks try to obtain 2 pieces of the blackened defias set for +10 (bonus) armor. Two of the boots/belt/gloves are the best pieces to do this with, however only the gloves/legs drop currently. Since bonus armor gives attack power for BM monks, it is probably worth using the legs to get the 2 piece bonus instead of the BoA legs.

GEAR:
Head: [Stained Shadowcraft Cap], [Lucky Fishing Hat]
Neck: [Eternal Woven Ivy Necklace]
Shoulders: [Stained Shadowcraft Spaulders]
Back: [Inherited Cape of the Black Baron]
Chest: [Stained Shadowcraft Tunic]

Monk - Mistweaver ★★★1/2
Mistweaver monks are strong healers who like a mix of int, stam, haste, and spirit to stay alive and heal. Unfortunately I’ve never played one, so I can’t really say much more about them.

Monk - Windwalker ★★★1/2
These monks trade BM’s survivability for more damage. They still have somewhat decent survivability with high mobility. Stat priority goes to agility, stam, haste, and crit.

Paladin - Holy ★★
Paladin is often considered the least useful class in the 19 bracket, but some players continue to do well with them. There are a few holy players that I’ve seen, so there may be quite some leeway when it comes to gear. Most mail gear has strength, so many pieces are leather/cloth. Stat priority goes to int, stam, and crit?

GEAR:
Head: [Pristine Lightforge Helm], [Lucky Fishing Hat]
Neck: [Eternal Horizon Choker]
Shoulders: [Mystical Pauldrons of Elements], [Pristine Lightforge Spaulders]
Back: [Ancient Bloodmoon Cloak]
Chest: [Mystical Vest of Elements], [Pristine Lightforge Breastplate]
Bracers: [Uninsured Bracers] (H), [Acquisition Bracers] (H), [Mindthrust Bracers], [Cuffs of Black Elements]
Gloves: [Fine Leather Gloves], [Magefist Gloves]
Belt: [Earthbound Girdle of the Sorcerer], [Keller's Girdle], [Searing Belt] (A)

Rings: Gift of Versatility
Weapon: Elemental Force, Mark of the Thunderlord + Major Intellect

TALENT: Pursuit of Justice, Speed of Light

Paladin - Protection ★1/2
Paladin is often considered the least useful class in the 19 bracket, but some players persist and end up surprising people with their play. Prot pallies lack damage, take extra damage due to being a tank, but they have some ability to offheal. Prot pallies are extremely rare, so this section is mostly speculation. Useful stats are stamina, strength, and bonus armor.

GEAR:

Head: [Lucky Fishing Hat], [Polished Helm of Valor]
Neck: [Eternal Talisman of Evasion]
Shoulders: [Polished Spaulders of Valor]
Back: [Ripped Sandstorm Cloak]
Chest: [Polished Breastplate of Valor]
Bracers: [Sparkmetal Bracers] (A), [Bracers of the Most Trusted] (H), [Collarspike Bracers]

Trinkets: [Inherited Insignia], [Inherited Mark of Tyranny], [Arena Grand Master], [Defending/Returning Champion]
Weapon: [Blooksoaked Skullforge Reaver] + [Flamescarred Draconian Deflector]

Bracers: Major Stamina
Gloves: Glove Reinforcements
Legs: Heavy Leg Reinforcements, Ironscale Leg Armor, Angerhide Leg Armor
Boots: Minor Speed
Rings: Gift of Versatility
Weapon: Crusader, Elemental Force

TALENT: Speed of Light

Paladin - Retribution ★★★
Paladin is often considered the least useful class in the 19 bracket, but there are good players who make it work well. Retribution is the most useful pally spec, and it can do particularly well in arena. Like arms warriors, ret pallies are somewhat tanky and survivable, and use crusader to help them burst down opponents. Ret focuses on stam, strength, and crit. Note that crusader is not allowed in competitive arenas, but is allowed in WSG.

GEAR:
Head: [Polished Helm of Valor]
Neck: [Eternal Emberfury Talisman]
Shoulders: [Polished Spaulders of Valor]
Back: [Worn Stoneskin Gargoyle Cape]
Chest: [Polished Breastplate of Valor]
Bracers: [Sparkmetal Bracers] (A), [Bracers of the Most Trusted] (H), [Collarspike Bracers]

Priest - Discipline ★★★★★
Discipline priests are very powerful healers with the strong shields, large flash heals, and penance. They also have a reasonable offensive output with DoTs, elemental force, and penance. They focus on intellect, spellpower, and haste to help heal, and often prefer stamina to help stay alive when focused/targeted.

GEAR:
Head: [Lucky Fishing Hat], [Tattered Dreadmist Mask]
Neck: [Eternal Horizon Choker]
Shoulders: [Exquisite Sunderseer Mantle]
Back: [Ancient Bloodmoon Cloak]
Chest: [Tattered Dreadmist Robe]

Priest - Holy
Holy priest is simply inferior to disc priest in almost every way. If you really want to try holy, I'd use the disc gear. Let me know how it goes and what you've found the stat priority to be.

Priest - Shadow
Shadow priest at 19 lacks too many tools to be useful. Disc priests will actually outdamage shadow priests at this point, so theres basically no reason to play a shadow priest at 19. If you really want to try shadow, then start with the disc gear and let me know what you find the stat priority to be.

Rogue - Assassination ★★★
Rogues have an extremely strong burst opener and decent sustained damage if able to stay on target, which makes them great flag carrier killers. Unfortunately, without a slow or speed boost, they are easily CC’d, kited, or simply outrun. Assassination rogues have high sustained damage, and may not prioritize agility as much as combat rogues. Assassination rogues use double daggers. The highest weapon damage possible is used for the mainhand, while the offhand should focus mostly on stats (but weapon damage as well). Feel free to use a full agility set like combat to maximize ambush damage.

Rogue - Combat ★★★★1/2
Rogues have an extremely strong burst opener and decent sustained damage if able to stay on target, which makes them perfect flag carrier killers. Unfortunately, without a slow or speed boost, they are easily CC’d, kited, or simply outrun. Combat rogues go extremely offensive with a priority on agility, attack power, and crit. Stam is often sacrificed as you will not likely live long either way. A general set with mixed stam and agility can be useful for flag carrying or mid fighting. Combat rogues are the most popular rogues and use a slow, high weapon damage weapon in the mainhand, and whatever gives them the most attack power in the offhand.

Head: [Stained Shadowcraft Cap]
Neck: [WSG Medallion], [Eternal Will of the Martyr]

Rogue - Subtlety ★★★
Rogues have an extremely strong burst opener and decent sustained damage if able to stay on target, which makes them perfect flag carrier killers. Rogues go extremely offensive with a priority on agility, attack power, and crit. Subtlety has a DoT with heomorrhage, which works well with elemental force, as well as getting extra benefits from multistrike. If running with healers or flag carrying, a general set with decent stam and agility can be useful for helping take out targets in mid. Subtlety rogues use a high weapon damage dagger in the main hand, with the offhand weapon being anything that provides good stats.

Shaman - Elemental ★★★1/2
Elemental shamans are in a poor spot at 19, doing mediocre damage. Shamans bring a lot to the table with ghost wolf, purge, and off-healing, however resto shamans will actually do more damage with lightning bolts, meaning the only real advantage to playing elemental shaman is the knockback for CC purposes (and avoiding healer queue issues). Int and haste are the main stat priorities.

Shaman - Enhancement ★★★
Enhance shamans are not in a very good spot for the 19 bracket. Without flurry and stormstrike, some key abilities are missing. Haste stacking is only useful when shamans have flurry at level 20+, and without flurry the cooldowns for our two melee skills are very long. Enhance are capable of short bursts of high damage, which can be useful to finish opponents off, along with all the standard advantages of shaman (purge, ghost wolf, off-healing), which makes them decent in arena.

Shaman - Restoration ★★★★★
An extremely powerful healer that is considered the best healer in the bracket. Lots of powerful tools, including purge to remove bubbles from the other top healer in the bracket (disc priest), make this class very powerful in the right hands. Resto shamans make decent flag carriers with ghost wolf and high healing power. Useful stats are int, spellpower, stam, haste, and sometimes spirit.

Warlock - Affliction ★★★
The DoT heavy warlock can be quite devastating if DoTs are allowed to tick. Can contribute a lot of damage to team fights and pressure the enemy healers by spreading a lot of damage around. Fear provides some great CC, though your DoTs can easily break fear (along with other CC like polymorph), so sometimes its better to not DoT up everything in sight. Stat priority is int, spellpower, and haste.

Warlock - Demonology ★★★
I’ve seen very few demonology warlocks. I imagine the gear will be similar to other warlock specs, however I don’t know whether haste or crit is prioritized (I assume crit for soul fire?). Demonology looks to have some potential from what I can see, but I've never played it. If you play demo, let me know what you use for gear and why.

Warlock - Destruction ★★★1/2
Known for huge hitting chaos bolts, destruction is the most popular warlock spec and can take opponents down very quickly if allowed to cast. Despite being slow and not particularly great in a 1v1 scenario, destro locks make great additions to mid team fights. Fear is a powerful CC tool, and the protection of a team can let warlocks get burning embers to unleash some powerful chaos bolts. Stat priority is on int, crit, haste, and versatility. Crit increases damage on chaos bolt and burning ember generation through immolation. Haste means being able to finish casting spells before dying or enemies getting out of range. I’ve seen mixes from 100% crit to 100% haste. You’ll have to find your personal playstyle and adapt your gear/enchants to it.

Warrior - Arms ★★★★★
Arms is the main spec for warrior and is quite powerful. Arms warriors are quite tanky and rely on rend and crusader procs for damage. Stam is an extremely valued stat, with strength and crit being close seconds. Haste is not useful. Enchants tend to favor stam and versatility, however strength can be focused on as well for the leg/shoulder enchants. Note that crusader is not allowed in competitive arenas, but is allowed in WSG.

Warrior - Fury ★★★
Fury warriors aren’t as reliable as arms warriors for PvP, but they can definitely be played. Fury warriors give up mortal strike and rend, but get bloodthirst and wild strike in return. Fury warriors don’t have a powerful DoT, but can deal solid damage when they stick to their target. Fury warriors like strength, stam, and crit. Note that crusader is not allowed in competitive arenas, but is allowed in WSG.

Pattern's Item Scaling Chart

NS = No Scaling
LO = Heirloom Only

Items will have the same listing order as their tooltips. So Magefist Gloves - Item - World of Warcraft 6/3/5 means that Magefist Gloves scale to 6 int, 3 stam, and 5 spirit.

Random dungeon queue rewards (belts and cloaks) do not scale. WSG PvP items (rings, neck, cloak, weapons) do not scale.
