Portals and chromie time rope a dope

portals subject was brought up in a unrelated ezoo trink thread. deserves a own thread because chromie, blizzard patches/hotfixes/maintenance along with things you have done or don't affect the use of portals and of course we know the trink.

today, messing with some of my 20's, i log one in oribos, i notice my SL cov abilities are missing, i take the portal to SW, when there i turn around and can't use the oribos portal. i say good one blizz! this player has done the SL skips, has done WOD, BC, MOP, Legion, WOTLK, intros.

i check other portals and can only use boralis, azuna, and jade forest portal. i could not even go to exodar! i was in DF time, i have done the DF campaign on a main, yet in DF time no valdrakken port.

i go to the SW mission board there is the report to chromie and 2 other zone quests, i go to chromie do her talk to report quest, then pick SL, i go to the SW mage tower, my player can use 10 portals. SL time i can use valdrakken port.

i go into oribos portal, and a NPC is there with a re-intro quest, i had to repick a cov, pick which cov to aid, then a quest to report to that cov. i got the cov abilities, this was all done before, in maldraxxas the daily quest at the house of plagues is up, because i have also done the quest chain to unlock that before.

i go back to chromie, and use option return to current time (do not select DF from expac screens), i still have my SL cov abilites (shaded req zone). only three portals mentioned before are useable. tested ezoo trink in WOD, has huge damage, what we call works

today i was messing with some of my level 20 horde players, had one in legion time and one in SL time they were able to use all the portals in both rooms.

i have not played much of DF, as a horde the belameth portal that can be used at certain locations, when you get to belameth you are essentially stranded, you can use the FP there, hearth, fly out, use the boat to Gilneas. now, for alliance, when they arrive at belameth they have access to 5 portals.

in the immediate area
- SW
- valsharah (legion)
- mt hyjal, btw the mt hyjal portal to SW no longer has a level restriction
- darkshore
side of a building prior the docks/pier for gilneas boat
- feathermoon fortress feralas

even my level 1 ally hunter was able to use all the above

DF was and still is not my thing, i read that the emerald dream aspect of all that story was NE focused. i never played the whole factions rope a dope. but knowing from the past, he who whines the loudest wins in WOW. i could just imagine had the horde received a area like this. i search to see if there were complaints, most by alliance saying horde should have no access, should be killable, etc.

look like this year putting out fires, candy buckets, etc i will use alliance

Not a huge Lore-geek, me... & I'm obviously a Horde true,
but I have & do play some Nelfs & I'm offended that Bel'Ameth is even a thing!
Why is the new World tree tacked on to Dragonfetish & not on the Ruins of Feathermoon or over the Ashen stump of Tel'drassil, where it belongs.

I'd be fine with Horde not having access to it & I find it wildly obnoxious to even get around.
Sure, the portals are great, but it is a hollow, half-assed, wildly over-sized zone of suck.
The Kaldorei deserve better.

someone told me there are two phases of belameth, one version you unlock thru a quest line then it becomes a daily quest hub time sink area that does not have those portals with a different entry method. the one i have been at is a idle zone with a low level with no hostile mobs and ports for alliance.

for high levels they use a portal that phases the area, if they use FP to go there they get the non quest hub version

WOW is full of abaondoned projects

Crystalsong Forest was supposed to be a major quest hub, but they scrapped everything and moved everything important to Dalaran & Argent Tournament.

Karabor and Bladespire Citadel were supposed to be factional cities in WoD, but they decided to scrap that and force everyone to hole up in their Garrison and funnel world pvp via Ashran.

that STILL steams me...
WoD is quite hilarious for many reasons but my favorite, which still makes me laugh to this day, is how they just completely gave up on it mid-expansion and the last patch and a half became the Legion prepatch, basically.

It fits my general rule that time travel as a plot device makes everything worse. I mean try explaining the Bronze dragonflight to somebody.

WoD remains one of my favorite places in the whole game. the music, the zones, insatances & raids, the mobs, the loot... I love it!
But thematically, it is terribad fan-fic at best; & from an xPac-quality perspective: unacceptable.
tho, we did get the Magnificent Swan Song of Legion out of it's abandonment...

It has some good open world content. I can't speak to when it was current. I didn't play it. But how I now judge old content is "can I completely level in this one expansion?" and I think WoD falls a little short on that front.

Another interesting feature about WoD is how the backstory and theme matters and changes how an expansion is remembered. I think if WoD was a pure new expansion, it would be remembered better. The time travel aspect was just silly fan service.

The same goes for MoP. If MoP wasn't the Kung-fu Panda expansion, it would be remembered as one of WoW's best. A lot of people, myself included, hated pandas and monks as not thematically fitting into WoW.

I do dislike how from MoP onwards there was a formula:
  • 4-5 zones
  • 8 dungeons
  • 1 raid per patch of 8-10 bosses
  • A new busywork zone in each major patch
For all its faults, BFA broke from this ssomewhat with 6 zones on 2 continents, 2 well-regarded zones in 8.2 (Nazjatar and Mechagon) and Azerite traits would've been regarded much better (IMHO) if it didn't cost to change them.
