[Guide] 3.1 Mage Compendium.

Hello all, Today i'm here to talk about Mages in the 19 Bracket and how to go about making one at it's best :)

In my whole 2 years of playing a 19 mage, I have rerolled it 4 times now and always been finding new ways and ideas to be able to perfect my class.

Table of Contents

  1. General Information.
  2. Talents/Specs.
  3. Glyphs.
  4. Rotations.
  5. Professions.
  6. Consumables.
  7. What To Use and When To Use It.
  8. Gear List/s

This is my Armory: Wtfcookies - Frostmourne

General Information

The mage is a caster that specializes in burst damage and area of effect spells. His primary role in a group at lower levels is damage dealing and crowd control through the use of Polymorph, temporarily changing humanoids and beasts into harmless critters.

PvP-wise, mages are considered "glass cannons" - a design philosophy which gives mages generous burst damage at the cost of, generally, low health and armor values. They are one of the classes with the potential for dealing out the greatest amount of damage in the shortest amount of time. In group PvP, mages will stay back and focus on crowd control with Polymorph and pick off targets from range. Depending on the Battleground and the situation, mages typically AoE to prevent node captures or nuke flag carriers as fast as possible. In solo PvP, a skilled Frost mage is a formidable opponent, but the word "skilled," needs to be emphasized.

Talents

Firstly, If your smart, you will spec 5 into Improved Frostbolt, That's the FIRST thing you do, And get used to it because you WILL be using this alot. Next you can decide, Decide on whats more popular in a WSG or Arena, Ranged Dps or Melee DPS. Depending on whatever you believe is more popular, will determine what spec to go, I'm personally 3/3 Frostbite, 5/5 Improved Frostbolt, and 2/3 Duration.

Or, You could go 4/5 Imp Frostbolt, 3/3 Frostbite and 3/3 Duration. Whatever floats your boat.

Glyphs

Now Glyphs are basically self preference, somewhat the same as the talents mentioned above. Some of you might like the Polymorph Glyph which removes all DoT's off the enemy target when polymorphed, Or some people may like the increased Crit with the Fireball Glyph. I use Glyph of Arcane Missiles and Glyph of Polymorph: Penguin Purely because i am quick on the button the start channeling missiles of my opponent goes to LoS bandage/heal, They are pretty much screwed due to blizzards poor environment structure.

Rotations

Now, Rotations you say? Yeah, I personally use my own which i have found puts out DoTs, Slow, Burst and a Snare, Within a hefty 4 seconds. The rotation i use when at distance is the most effective one i have found out of the many i have tried.

Fireball -> Arcane Missiles -> Frostbolt -> Fire Blast. (Balance Set)

Now in a pure fire set, You may want to rotate like this:

Fireball -> Fireball -> Fireblast -> Frost nova ->(Gain Distance)-> Repeat.

Professions

Now this is debateable depending on whether you would rather be snare, balance or damage, during most of your playing time. I chose 225 Herbalism and 225 Skinning, Because i like my snare set and i like my fire set, So therefore i chose soemthing that can benefit me in both ways. 225 Herb will get my up to full in a short amount of time in my frie set which only consists of 700 or so HP and the ectra crit i get from skinning makes my fireballs rock jocks. Now with the Snare side of it, The herb will regen my hp when my bandage is on cooldown and the skinning can support the Glyph of Arcane Missiles i use which i tend to use alot. But i'd recommend 150 Engineering and 225 Herb for full snare, 225 Herb 225 Skinning for Balance, and 150 Engineering and 225 Skinning for Damage.

Consumables

The greatest thing about consumables at lvl 19 is, they are all viable to a 19 mage except maybe 1 or 2.

[ITEM]Minor Wizard Oil[/ITEM]

[ITEM]Elixir of Firepower[/ITEM]

[ITEM]Rumsey Rum Black label[/ITEM]

[ITEM]Dark Rune[/ITEM]

[ITEM]Healing Potion[/ITEM]

[ITEM]Swiftness potion[/ITEM] (This and slowfall off Alliance tunnel roof works a charm when FCing.)

[ITEM]Elixir of Giant Growth[/ITEM] (For the Lols).

What To Use and When To Use It.

Now basically Mages aren't very great in the Offensive side of the game at lvl 19, So basically what that means is a top notch Mage vs another player of another class who is also very good at his class, the opponents will most likely win unless you know what your doing and anticipate stuff at the right time.

Mage Vs. Paladin - Can win if you time frost nova/bandages well.

Mage Vs. Shaman - Dont even bother.

Mage Vs. Rogue - Auto win as long as you know how to kite and keep your rank 1 fireballs on him or you arcane missles his every LoS

Mage Vs. Warrior - Very Touchy subject, It would involve smart timing of your trinkets and your bandages. Try to keep the warrior snared at all times and try not to use all your mana on trying to blast through his armor.

Mage Vs. Hunter - Well pretty much the only thing i have to say is, Keep the hunter sheeped and the pet frosted for as long as possible while maintaining damage.

Mage Vs. Priest - Same sort of deal as the shaman i guess haha.

Mage Vs.Warlock - Keep de-curses up and make sure you oom him, The quicker the warlock ooms, the quicker he will want to life tap and the quicker his health will hit 0. Act very defensively.

Mage Vs. Druid - Try put some spell power gear on because they can out heal any damage you will do in a balance/Snare set and still maintain over 3/4 mana.

Mage Vs. Mage - Keep Fireball DoTs and Arcane missiles up at all times, Arcane Explosion if you have to to get them down that last little bit.

So you're saying on your belt you would trade 1 stam for 4 int smart. Second the boots you NEED run speed on a D mage you need to be able to actually catch people to snare them and be able to catch up to your team quicker. 3rd is the shoulders you're saying you would have 2 more stamina than 6 int? You also NEED a pvp trinket on D unless you're saying when trinket is down then wear 2 agm's I suppose. 4th the chest you would want the int form tree bark. Your set looks like a stam set more than a D cc set. 5th engineers, and or Spidersilk cloak, 2 more int > 2 stam. Also you could use spidersilk for hit if you want to. I also say for snare set you said CC/FC which is wrong because you would not be using your fc gear as your defensive cc gear, what that is saying to me or what you're thinking is Stam > Int on D. I don't know if you've ever played in a premade but the enemy offensive doesn't kill the mage much they just CC, Shock, Fear, Kick, and w/e other silences. Make a section between your Fc, and Cc set imo.

Who said anything about D mage in the guide?

You really think people who are new to making mages will know how to play defensively with a druid and a priest in a serious 10 man?

This guide is purely for people who are new to mages.
