I'm gonna preface this by saying that if you ignore my post, you are risking the reputation of Twinks and the Twink Cup itself. Last year there were issues with disconnects due to alleged DDOS. In today's games, similar issues happened (albeit, to our commentators). If we want to have a smooth tournament that we ALL can be proud of, you NEED to pay careful attention to this post.

**Before you do anything, remove Skype from your phone. Completely uninstall it and do NOT reinstall it until after the Twink Cup.** Unless you know how to proxy your phones Skype, this is something that needs to be done. If you chose to do everything on this list but neglect to remove Skype from your phone, your IP can be resolved if your phone Skype is connected to your home's WiFi.

Make sure this option is enabled under Tools -> Options

Once that is checked, I highly reccomend that you *log off Skype and attempt to get a new IP*. Before doing this, go to What Is My IP Address? IP Address Tools and More and write your IP down on a piece of paper, we will need this for later. The easiest way to reset your IP is to call your ISP (Internet Company) and tell them the following:

"I have been getting harassed online by people who have my IP address. They are overloading my connection with this information. I would like help getting a new IP."

At this point, they might either tell you

A) That you can't reset your IP.

or B) That you can simply reset your IP by turning off your modem/router (powercycling)

If they tell you A), ask them if your IP is static or dynamic. If it is static, you PROBABLY cannot change your IP. If it is dynamic, or if they they tell you option B) say the following:

"I heard that if I deactivate my modem and reactivate it, it might reset your IP, could we try this really quick?"

If you don't know what your modem is, please look at this:

Your modem is the thing that goes DIRECTLY into the wall through a coaxial cable

To have them deactive your modem, tell them the following:

"To deactive, can you please remove my modem from the list of devices on my account." What this does is it literally removes your modem from their device history. IPs are assigned to individual modems. The IP you are assigned is determined by the time your ISP adds your device to their database. After they deactivate your modem, tell them to just wait a few minutes before reactivating. To reactivate, they might need your MAC address. This will be found on the side of your modem on a little sticker (http://i.imgur.com/lKyrZGM.jpg). After your modem has been reactivated, check to see if your IP has changed by going to What Is My IP Address? IP Address Tools and More again. If it hasn't changed, tell the representative on the phone that you would like to try again. Have them deactivate then reactivate your modem a second time. If this doesn't work, you can try unplugging your modem for 8+ hours, 24 hours is ideal.

Once you have a new IP, DO NOT LOG ONTO SKYPE YET. Please get a proxy at Proxee.net - The Premier Skype Proxy Service! enter "TWINK" as a promo code for 50% off for one month. If you want to be REALLY safe, sign up anonymously. Register your proxee account under a fresh email and use a random username (ie DeanSandersson445). The best way to be anonymous is to be discreet as possible. Install their software and read their documentation. At this point, you CAN chose to make a new Skype account at https://login.skype.com/account/signup-form . I HIGHLY recommend making a new Skype to use your proxy with. Once again, please register under a NEW email using a random user name. People CAN get your Skype by having your email, phone number, name, and city. Make your Skype name something anonymous but easy to remember. Make sure you launch Skype USING the proxee.exe client on your computer.

I cannot stress how important it is to do this ASAP. Do not assume that you are safe and that "no one would possibly have my IP". Even though you are using Curse Voice, Mumble, or some other voice software, your IP is still vulnerable with Skype if you run it any time between now and the Twink Cup. People who DDOS can easily get your IP if you don't protect yourself.

-And just to emphasize-

PLEASE DO NOT USE SKYPE ON YOUR PHONE IF YOU PLAN TO PROTECT YOURSELF. When you are registering for Proxee and a new Skype, make a FRESH email and use fake names to sign up.

I would also suggest using an alternative to Skype specifically for the Twink Cup.

If you cannot pay for your own Proxy or if you don't wanna use Proxee, you can possibly get a proxy for free using this guide:

Thank you Moran for the guide. Hopefully it will help out anyone who was not already prepared.

My only concern is Proxee.net's shady reputation. There have been multiple accounts of people claiming that they sell IP's. In twitch chat today, someone apparently posted a list of "real" IPs, even with people who had proxee. Right now this is only a claim, because I only heard of someone posting it and nobody has a record of the post.

I'll be changing my IP tomorrow along with switching VPN providers. I suggest that other twinks look at other VPN providers besides Proxee first, just in case those suspicions are correct.

That is why I suggest signing up using a FRESH email and an anonymous name. Anonymity is the name of the game. I have included a link to a guide showing how to set up a free proxy using Amazon Web Services.

Which ip do you need to reset v4 or v6? I know how to easily do that manually and I can probably write a guide if people are interested? I haven't actually used any DDoS software for any reasons but I know a few people who do (non twinks) anyway if y'all need another way I could write it tomorrow.

yes, they were posted a few times but deleted within seconds of being posted. rather annoying, I should have SS'd them but I wasn't sure how that would have helped.

Guys should have picked me as warrior for their team, i got a DDoS protection on my router xdxd

Everyone in the community involved in getting the games back online and staying that way did an absolutely incredible job last night I fully understand how stressful it was, over all the night was a huge success tho, I can't even think about the Warsong Tournament at this point, even though I know you guys are.

Getting a proxy is absolutely essential, Moran is right - it is your fault if you get Ddos'd.

that is why you never trust vpn / proxy companies, everyone has a dollar amount and you're sure worth less than that.
i wouldnt doubt that proxee sold ips for less than $10

set up your own, 128 bit encryption good to go, then again you only need your own vpn if you're doing illegal stuff

Yeah mang, just like you're the one to blame when getting raped cause you wore daring cloths in public

First of all, this sort of hyperbolic comparison is a fallacy in itself. Second of all, the environment that the Twink Cup is being hosted in (a live stream with a large audience) requires that each person take the proper precautions to make sure the tournament itself runs smoothly. If you are a casual player, you probably will never need to proxy your Skype connection. But since the circumstances are drastically different and the stakes are much higher, it is imperative that everyone protects themselves.

Don't be an idiot.

Terrible analogy. Your example gives the rapist an incentive to assault you while not having DDoS protection provides an opportunity.

A more fitting analogy would be you leaving your front door wide open.

Wearing daring cloths in public shouldn't give anyone an incentive to rape you....

I do agree though, that DDoS protection is a must, sadly. I was just questioning the term 'you fault'. But since countering the ddosers themselves seem impossible unfortunately, I guess we'll have to just protect ourselves, although it would seem more fitting to put your strength into actually stopping ddosing.

ps: welcome back xo
