If you want to rack up alot of fast critter kills you can do that in Arathi Basin there are critters that spawn instantly at Farm. I have over 4000 critter kills on my mage.

A mage could easily get thousands by going up the mountain where the dwarf starter quest in the second area is for the level 5'ish trolls. Tiny little pigs everywhere.
