    I. Introduction

About the Author: I go by the in game name Samhain, I've played in the nineteen bracket from Vanilla all the way through Warlords of Draenor. I originally played rogue but throughout the years I have played every class in each of their expansions and have become very knowledgeable about every aspect of every class. With the announcement of Classic WoW servers at Blizzcon 2017, I am making this guide to help the players that didn't get to experience the nineteen bracket as it was at the games original release.

    II. Choosing Your Race

    Alliance

    Human

    [IMG] [IMG]

    Base Stats
    Str:20 - Agi:20 - Stam:20 - Int:23 - Spi:24

Humans have Desperate Prayer which is a great self heal in a dangerous situation but it's on a 10 minute cooldown, Perception is their greatest ability that will allow you to catch rogues in stealth and save you from some ambushs, The Human Spirit is a decent ability but spirit isn't of that much use compared to MP5, Diplomacy will help you with the painful Furbolg Medicine Pouch grind if you are brave enough to endure this, the other two racials are only useful in PvE and melee classes.

*Desperate Prayer (Priest Racial) - Instantly heals the caster for 263 to 326. 10 min cooldown.

*Perception - Dramatically increases stealth detection for 20 sec. 3min cooldown.

*The Human Spirit -Spirit increased by 5%.

*Diplomacy - Reputation gains increased by 10%.

*Sword Specialization - Skill with Swords and Two-Handed Swords increased by 5.

*Mace Specialization - Skill with Maces and Two-Handed Maces increased by 5.

    Dwarf

    [IMG] [IMG]

    Base Stats
    Str:22 - Agi:16 - Stam:23 - Int:21 - Spi:22

Like humans dwarfs also have Desperate Prayer which is a great self heal but on a long timer, Stoneform isn't all that great with such little bleeds and poisons in the nineteen bracket the armor increase is decent but 10% isn't a lot on a clothy, Frost Resistance is not of much use because you can dispel anything frost related on yourself, and Gun Spec is only useful in PvE.

*Desperate Prayer (Priest Racial) - Instantly heals the caster for 263 to 326. 10 min cooldown.

*Stoneform - While active, grants immunity to Bleed, Poison, and Disease effects. In addition, Armor increased by 10%. Lasts 8 sec.

*Gun Specialization - Guns skill increased by 5.

*Frost Resistance - Frost resistance increased by 10.

*Find Treasure - Allows the dwarf to sense nearby treasure, making it appear on the minimap. Lasts until cancelled.

    Night Elf
    [IMG] [IMG]

    Base Stats
    Str:17 - Agi:25 - Stam:19 - Int:22 - Spi:23

Ah Night Elf priest, odd enough their priest racial is now actually a druid passive in retail wow lol, Starshards in Classic is a channeled effect that does 162 arcane damage over 6 seconds to a single target, Shadowmeld is not the greatest ability in Classic because you can't use it in combat like current retail to mitigate incoming damage, Quickness won't be too useful because you won't have a great amount of dodge anyways as a priest and nature resistance for a priest will really only help resist earth shock interrupts from horde shamans, anything else you can dispel off yourself.

*Starshards (Priest Racial) - Rains starshards down on the enemy target's head, causing 162 Arcane damage over 6 sec. 30 sec cooldown.

*Shadowmeld - Activate to slip into the shadows, reducing the chance for enemies to detect your presence. Lasts until cancelled or upon moving. Night Elf Rogues and Druids with Shadowmeld are more difficult to detect while stealthed or prowling.

*Quickness - Dodge chance increased by 1%.

*Wisp Spirit - Transform into a wisp upon death, increasing speed by 50%.

*Nature Resistance - Nature Resistance increased by 10.

    Horde

    Undead

    [IMG] [IMG]

    Base Stats
    Str:19 - Agi:18 - Stam:21 - Int:20 - Spi:28

Undead is a good choice for priest, not because of their crappy priest racial but because they are the only race in Classic that has shadow resistance which is the most useful resistance to have, if you don't manage to resist a fear they also have Will of the Forsaken another great ability that allows you to become immune to fear, charm and sleep effects for a short amount of time (also useful for that annoying Magic Dust ) Cannibalize can be useful if you are out of mana and your bandage is on cooldown and need to heal, Underwater Breathing is well... underwater breathing.

*Touch of Weakness (Priest Racial) - The next melee attack against the caster will cause 8 Shadow damage and reduce the damage caused by the attacker by 2 for 2 min.

*Will of the Forsaken - Provides immunity to Charm, Fear and Sleep while active. May also be used while already afflicted by Charm, Fear or Sleep. Lasts 5 sec. 2 min cooldown.

*Cannibalize - When activated, regenerates 7% of total health every 2 sec for 10 sec. Only works on Humanoid or Undead corpses within 5 yds. Any movement, action, or damage taken while Cannibalizing will cancel the effect. 2 min cooldown.

*Underwater Breathing - Underwater breath lasts 300% longer than normal.

*Shadow Resistance - Shadow Resistance increased by 10.

    Troll
    [IMG] [IMG]

    Base Stats
    Str:21 - Agi:22 - Stam:21 - Int:18 - Spi:24

Troll priests have one of the most powerful class racials in the game in Classic, Hex of Weakness is a mortal strike effect that reduces the effectiveness of an enemies healing by 20%, Berserking is another great ability if you find yourself in trouble because while critically injured it will give you 30% spell haste, I like to use a dark rune when I am out of mana to get back all my mana then pop this racial and utilize Breserkings full effect, Regeneration is a decent racial that that increases health regen from spirit by 10% and may allow it to continue regenerating while in combat, the last three racials are not of much use to priest regardless the first two greatly make up for the other less useful ones.

*Hex of Weakness (Priest Racial) - Weakens the target enemy, reducing damage caused by 2 and reducing the effectiveness of any healing by 20%. Lasts 2 min.

*Berserking - Increases your casting and attack speed by 10% to 30%. At full health the speed increase is 10% with a greater effect up to 30% if you are badly hurt when you activate Berserking. Lasts 10 sec.

*Regeneration - Health regeneration rate increased by 10%. 10% of total Health regeneration may continue during combat.

*Bow Specialization - Skill with Bow Weapons increased by 5.

*Throwing Specialization - Skill with Throwing Weapons increased by 5.

*Beast Slaying - Damage dealt versus Beasts increased by 5%.

    Class Bonus

Priests get an additional +2 Intellect and +3 Spirit.

    III. Gearing Your Priest

Gearing your Priest in Classic WoW is a little more complex than in current retail because there is no option to lock your experience. Discovering the areas you need to do your quests in before hand and doing your quests at the earliest level possible is vital.

I also use a Burning Crusade database for the links, because there are no Classic databases that work with forum links, to see the gears actual vanilla stats use this database https://db.vanillagaming.org/

    V. Priest Talents

    Standard Holy Spec
Healing Focus 2/2, Improved Renew 3/3, Divine Fury 5/5 - This is the best healing spec using Heal instead of Lesser Heal for larger heals and better mana efficiency.
    https://db.vanillagaming.org/?talent#bZf0x

    Wand Spec

Wand Specialization 5/5, Healing Focus 2/2, Improved Renew - This is more of a support priest spec capable of dealing damage but has slower burst healing capabilities. Priests using this spec usually focus more on instant casts like shadow word: pain, renew and dispel in between wanding.

    VI. Mastering Your Class

    Priest_Role
    Healer

    Stat_Priority
    Intellect > Healing Power > Stamina > MP5 > Spirit

    Priest Statistics

    1 Intellect = 15 Mana / X% Spell Crit

    1 Healing Power =

    1 Stamina = 10 Health

MP5 = (Mana per 5 seconds) Mana that is restored every 5 seconds in and out of combat.

    1 Spirit =

    Mana Efficiency

Mana efficiency refers to the most cost effective way to heal or in other words the most healing per point of mana. In Classic mana does not regenerate like it does in retail today, you have to be smart when using your mana and know what spells will maximize your healing capabilities and which will render your mana pool useless.

    Formula for calculating mana efficiency
Spell Average Amount Healed รท Mana Cost = Mana Efficiency

For example, below are the spells by highest efficiency to lowest efficiency based on the average healing of each spell without any healing power.

    Heal (Rank 1) - 2.05
    Lesser Heal (Rank 3) - 1.95
    Renew (Rank 2) - 1.76 Imporved Renew 3/3 - 1.53 Unspeced
    Lesser Heal (Rank 2) - 1.74
    Renew (Rank 1) - 1.72 Improved Renew 3/3 - 1.51 Unspeced
    Lesser Heal (Rank 1) - 1.71
    Powerword: Shield (Rank 3) - 1.31 Improved Powerword: Shield 3/3 - 1.21 Unspeced
    Powerword: Shield (Rank 2) - 1.26 Improved Powerword: Shield 3/3 - 1.1 Unspeced
    Powerword: Shield (Rank 1) - 1.12 Improved Powerword: Shield 3/3 - 0.97 Unspeced

    Heal
(Rank 1) is the most efficient healing spell, specing into Divine Fury brings your Heal spell to a 2.5 second cast and it is also the most effective way in the bracket to burst heal. Improved Renew brings up your renews mana efficiency a good amount, I use renew on allies when I am repositioning or kiting when no one is in danger of dying, try not to over heal your allies with renew. Power Word: Shield is not worth using in vanilla, it costs too much mana for such a low amount of absorption, you will only be throwing mana away that could be used much more efficiently, if your ally is in danger of dying I recommend spamming Lesser Heal (Rank 1) instead of casting Powerword: Shield. Dispel Magic can be more mana efficient than any other spell depending on the circumstance, if you're quick at dispelling removing things like a glass cannon warlocks corruption can save your teammate from a lot of hurt at a lower cost than what you would of healed for that full duration of corruption.

    Advanced Unit Frames

The default interface for battlegrounds in Classic is horrible, especially for playing a healer class, the first thing you will want to do before entering Warsong Gultch is pick up a good unit frame add-on that will allow you to view your entire raid in battlegrounds. The best unit frame add-on in Classic is Luna Unit Frames but you can also use Grid.

    Add-on
    LunaUnitFrames

    Add-on
    Grid

    Other Useful Add-ons
Decursive is another great add-on that displays your teammates debuffs all in a bar that can be moved to a more convenient and visible location, allows you to assign Dispel Magic to your left or right mouse click when you interact with the buff bar, you can also customize the spells you want to be displayed in the debuff bar, be sure to only assign magical effects to be displayed. Examples - Polymorph, Fear, Hammer of Justice, Corruption.
