    I. Introduction

About the Author: I go by the in game name Samhain, I've played in the nineteen bracket from Vanilla all the way through Warlords of Draenor. I originally played rogue but throughout the years I have played every class in each of their expansions and have become very knowledgeable about every aspect of every class. With the announcement of Classic WoW servers at Blizzcon 2017, I am making this guide to help the players that didn't get to experience the nineteen bracket as it was at the games original release.

    II. Choosing Your Race

    Alliance

    Dwarf
    [IMG] [IMG]

    Base Stats
    Str:22 - Agi:19 - Stam:24 - Int:19 - Spi:20

Dwarfs have Stoneform which will grant immunity to certain debuffs like rend and serpent sting as well as give you a temporary 10% armor increase, Gun Specialization is only useful in PvE, Frost resistance can be useful when fighting cc mages and Find Treasure is an extra tracking ability that makes treasure chests show up on your mini map.

*Stoneform - While active, grants immunity to Bleed, Poison, and Disease effects. In addition, Armor increased by 10%. Lasts 8 sec.

*Gun Specialization - Guns skill increased by 5.

*Frost Resistance - Frost resistance increased by 10.

*Find Treasure - Allows the dwarf to sense nearby treasure, making it appear on the minimap. Lasts until cancelled.

    Night Elf
    [IMG] [IMG]

    Base Stats
    Str:17 - Agi:28 - Stam:20 - Int:20 - Spi:21

Night Elf is the best choice for the Alliance hunter, they start with the highest base agility, Shadowmeld is great for setting up preemptive attacks, Quickness is an added bonus for your Aspect of the Monkey they also have the highest base dodge percentage, Wisp Spirit can be useful if you're trying to body resurrect and Nature Resistance is great when paired with the 15 Nature resistance cloak enchant released in the Ahn'Qiraj Patch to prevent shamans earthbind totem and druids entangling roots.

*Shadowmeld - Activate to slip into the shadows, reducing the chance for enemies to detect your presence. Lasts until cancelled or upon moving. Night Elf Rogues and Druids with Shadowmeld are more difficult to detect while stealthed or prowling.

*Quickness - Dodge chance increased by 1%.

*Wisp Spirit - Transform into a wisp upon death, increasing speed by 50%.

*Nature Resistance - Nature Resistance increased by 10.

    Horde

    Orc

    [IMG] [IMG]

    Base Stats
    Str:23 - Agi:20 - Stam:23 - Int:17 Spi:24

Orcs are the weaker choice for a hunter in Classic, Blood Fury only increases melee attack power in Classic and is not really useful for a hunter, Hardiness is a great ability that grants a 25% chance to resist stuns like hammer of justice, Command is not too great because pet stats do not scale with the hunters stats in Classic and Axe Specialization is only useful in PvE.

*Blood Fury - Increases melee attack power by X, but reduces healing effects on you by 50%. Lasts 15 sec.

*Hardiness - Chance to resist Stun effects increased by an additional 25%.

*Command - Damage dealt by Hunter and Warlock pets increased by 5%.

*Axe Specialization - Skill with Axes and Two-Handed Axes increased by 5.

    Tauren
    [IMG] [IMG]

    Base Stats
    Str:25 - Agi:18 - Stam:23 - Int:15 - Spi:23

In my opinion Tauren is the best hunter choice for Horde, War Stomp is a great ability when you need to peel off rogues with evasion up or warriors using shield block, war stomping then while the enemy is stunned quickly wing clipping to break away, Endurance is a great ability because in Classic WoW it increases your total health pool by 5% so being a Tauren hunter flag carrier can have great perks, Cultivation is useless and Nature Resistance is great when paired with the 15 Nature resistance cloak enchant released in the Ahn'Qiraj Patch to prevent shamans earthbind totem and druids entangling roots.

*War Stomp - Stuns up to 5 enemies within 8 yds for 2 sec.

*Endurance - Total Health increased by 5%.

*Cultivation - Herbalism skill increased by 15.

*Nature Resistance - Nature Resistance increased by 10.

    Troll
    [IMG] [IMG]

    Base Stats
    Str:21 - Agi:25 - Stam:22 - Int:16 - Spi:22

Trolls are a good hunter choice, they have the highest base agility on horde, Berserking at the right moment can spike your dps a great deal but you must be nearly dead to get it's greatest benefit, using Berserking followed by Furbolg Medicine Pouch or Arena Grand Master when critically injured is a great way to survive while maximizing dps. Regeneration increases your total health regen by 10%, Bow and Throwing Specialization are only useful in PvE and Beast Slaying will increase the damage you do to hunters pets as well as druid flag carriers in bear form.

*Berserking - Increases your casting and attack speed by 10% to 30%. At full health the speed increase is 10% with a greater effect up to 30% if you are badly hurt when you activate Berserking. Lasts 10 sec.

*Regeneration - Health regeneration rate increased by 10%. 10% of total Health regeneration may continue during combat.

*Bow Specialization - Skill with Bow Weapons increased by 5.

*Throwing Specialization - Skill with Throwing Weapons increased by 5.

*Beast Slaying - Damage dealt versus Beasts increased by 5%.

    Class Bonus
    [IMG]

Hunters get an additional +3 Agility, +1 Stamina and +1 Spirit.

    III. Gearing Your Hunter

Gearing your hunter in Classic WoW is a little more complex than in current retail because there is no option to lock your experience. Discovering the areas you need to do your quests in before hand and doing your quests at the earliest level possible is vital. Keep in consideration you also need to make sure you get your pets as early as possible to keep them equal with your level when you reach nineteen.

Attention! Not all items will be available on this list at the launch, also one handed weapon and 15 agility enchant with an off hand is best in slot until 25 agility to two handed weapon becomes available.

I also use a Burning Crusade database for the links, because there are no Classic databases that work with forum links, to see the gears actual vanilla stats use this database https://db.vanillagaming.org/

    VI. Choosing Your Pet

Unlike current retail, hunters did not start with pets in Classic WoW, you have to reach level ten and then accept the quest that sends you through a chain of taming different beasts, upon the chains completion you learn Tame Beast and then can tame your first pet.

    Night Elf The Hunter's Path

Orc and Troll The Hunter's Path

Best twink hunter attack speed choice - The Rake
Cats in general are a great dps choice because their +10% DPS stat modifier is the highest and they most commonly have the quickest attack speed and the Claw ability for maximum spell knock back. The reason The Rake is a great dps choice is because it has the quickest attack speed 1.20 at nineteen and will have the most spell knock back when attacking other caster players, spell knock back is very effective in Classic WoW. 145% pursuit speed.

Slavering Worg is a wolf and the only other pet at nineteen that also has a 1.2 attack speed and is a great alternative to The Rake in terms of spell knock back, Wolves have a 5% armor stat modifier and Furious Howl an ability that gives all party members in a 15 yard range a 9 - 11 damage bonus on their next physical attack, the key is to use this before your multi-shot, it will grant all three shots the damage bonus.

Best twink hunter tank pet choice - Boars
All boars have the average attack speed of 2.00 at nineteen. Their stat modifiers make them the perfect tanking pet and pet of choice for the Beast Spec. In patch 1.9 Boars can learn the charge ability, which can be put to great use in pvp when managed properly. They also learn the Gore ability in Patch 2.0 The Burning Crusade, a cheap cost attack that does 9-13 damage and has a 50% chance to do double the damage,

Best twink hunter pursuit speed choice - Takk the Leaper
(Nerfed because of patch 1.12.1 Classic Launch.)
Takk is also a great dps choice, raptors are the only other pet family besides cats that also have a +10% DPS stat modifier. What makes Takk stand out was his unusually fast pursuit speed estimated at 223% in Classic WoW, allowing him to catch enemies quicker than many other pets. Takk is nerfed when all pets are changed in Patch 1.9 to have the same average pursuit speed of 115%.

Best twink hunter caster dps choice - Wind Serpents
In patch 1.8 wind serpents get the pet ability lightning breath an instant cast ability doing 21-23 nature damage, they become a good magic dps choice against classes with a lot of armor.

Below are the pet families, type, stat modifiers, skills and diet for all pets available at nineteen.

All pet skills will be available at the release of Classic WoW which is set to release in patch 1.12.1

Skills available in (Original Launch) Patch 1.1 - Bite, Claw, Cower, Growl
Skills available in Patch 1.7 - Furious Howl, Scorpid Poison, Screech

    VII. Training Your Pet

Training your pet in Classic WoW is much different than it is today, there are several things that factor into a pets training, (feeding) pet happiness, pet loyalty, pet level, and the types of skills that your pet can learn and training the max rank available for those skills.

    Pet Happiness and Loyalty
Keeping your pet "Happy" at all times is vital to gaining loyalty ranks. To do this make sure you always have the food in your pets diet available to feed him, even before taming a pet it is wise to have that pets food on hand because when you tame him he will be "Unhappy". Do not keep your pet dismissed for long periods of time when training loyalty this will lower his happiness. If your pet dies too much it will lose happiness. Keep your pet feed and happy at all times, a happy pet is a loyal pet. When your pets loyalty increases so will it's available training points to spend on pet skills and passive bonuses. There are six pet Loyalty Ranks.

5% of your current level is exactly one bar of experience. So it takes a maximum of 25% of your current level or 5 bars of experience to max loyalty with the exception of the time required while your pet is fully "Happy". Make sure you stop getting experience in between the time required phase to prevent unnecessary exp gain.

Keep in mind if you are taming Takk the Leaper training his loyalty to rank 6 will account for 25% minimum of your experience at level 19.

The higher your pets Loyalty Rank the more training points it will have, the less you will have to feed him and the less likely your pet will leave you.

    Training Your Pets Skills
In Classic WoW you had to actually learn the pet skill from a pet that has that skill upon being tamed to teach to your own pet. So in other words you have to tame a pet you more than likely will not want to keep in order to add that pet skill to your pets skill list.

To do this you needed to find out what skills your pet can learn (I provided this in the "Choosing Your Pet" section), leave your pet at a stable master and go and tame the pet that has the skill you need and then use that pet skill in combat against other mobs in PvE until you see in your chat log that the ability has been learned.

Luckily Moonsti created a brilliant list of pet skills and what pets can be tamed to learn them from all in an interactive youtube video, making our lives a whole lot easier!

    VIII. Mastering Your Class

    Hunter_Role
    Ranged Damage

    Stat_Priority
Agility > Attack Power > Stamina > Intellect

    Hunter Statistics

    1 Agility = 2 Ranged Attack Power / 1 Melee Attack Power / 2 Armor / X% Ranged Crit / X% Dodge

1 Attack Power = 1 Ranged Attack Power / 1 Melee Attack Power

    1 Stamina = 10 Health

    1 Intellect = 15 Mana / X% Spell Crit

    Hunter Movement And Kiting
The hunter is a ranged class and the most important thing when playing a hunter is knowing how to keep your range and kite enemies that are trying to close in on you.

    Back Strafing
I know we've all been victims of that concussive shotting hunter that slowly walks backwards with the S button and while he can keep you at range while keeping concussive shot on cooldown, this is not the ideal way to play hunter and will not give you the maximum advantage, don't be that noob.

First thing I will recommend is keybinding your S key to another ability and don't even give yourself the option to walk backwards. I use my S key for pet management with pet attack and pet follow which I will go over later.

Back strafing is a movement that allows you to move at full speed backwards. To do this hold down your right mouse button using your mouse movement to change the camera angle and use the A or D button to Strafe in the opposite direction of your enemy. This will be uncomfortable at first but with practice will give you an advantage over other players.

(Here is an example from master hunter Raziya.)

Raziya also created an add-on you can see in his video above that times your auto shots so you can maximize your damage at all times while kiting. When the white bar is fully depleted stop to cast autoshot, when the bar is fully red you will shoot and then can continue kiting.

    Add-on
    Rais AutoShot Timer

Below is an auto shot macro that will allow you to keep autoshot active without accidentally canceling it so long as you pull with the hotkey you have this macro bound to, change the (insert hotkey macro is bound to here) to the button you have the macro on. For example my autoshot macro is on button 1 so IsAutoRepeatAction(1) is in my macro description.

    No Cancel Autoshot Macro

    Map Placement And Track Humanoids
Hunters have an advantage with track humanoids so make use of it, make it a habit to watch your mini map. I would recommend a mini map add-on that allows you to customize and move your mini map to a more visible location, like the simpleMinimap add-on.

    Add-on
    simple-minimap

Map awareness and knowing where to place yourself on the field is the most important thing in Warsong Gultch, intercepting and killing flag carriers trying to cross the field, slowing targets with concussive shot that are attempting to connect with their group or get away and finding sneaky warriors trying to get in range to charge you. Good warriors can be very sneaky hiding behind the stumps in Warsong Gultch to get within charge range and before you know it you can find yourself permanently slowed with hamstring, catching the warrior with track humanoids before he charges is your best defense. I also would recommend enabling enemy name plates by pressing CTRL V this will show enemies health bars behind objects. Speaking of warriors that brings us to our next subject pet management.

One Button Cycle Track Humanoids/Track Beasts

    Pet Management
Pet management is important especially in Classic WoW where your pets health pool is so low, if you don't manage your pet you will quickly find yourself without a pet for most of the game. Below are some great hunter pet management macros that combine seven functions into two buttons.

One Button Pet Attack, Follow And Assist Macro

All In One Pet Macro (Feeds your pet the first item in your first bag, Dismisses, Calls and Revives Pet)

When you see a warrior running towards you, it's not in your best interest to hope your arcane shot lands before his charge especially with the smaller range window in Classic, managing your pet as a barrier between you and a warrior is a great way to prevent a warrior attempting to charge you, simply have your pet attack the warrior and force him to back off or enter combat with your pet and allowing you to engage without being charged, if you see the warrior backing away trying to kill your pet simply call your pet back. Takk is great for this with his fast pursuit speed as well as boars with charge in Patch 1.9.

    Other Macros

Try and bind as many abilities as possible, multi functional key binds means less buttons and a easier cleaner UI to work with. Below are some other simple key binds with abilities that go well together.

    One Button Aspect Swap Macro

One Button Concussive Shot / Wing Clip

One Button Mongoose Bite / Raptor Strike

One Button Arcane Shot / Multi-Shot

Furious Howl / Mult-Shot (Wolf Pets Only)

This concludes my hunter guide for the time being, if you have any questions about the hunter class at 19 that I may not have covered here, feel free to send me a PM and I will respond to you when I am available.
